>Sobering national test results show more high school seniors are struggling with math and reading than at any point in recent decades, with Education Secretary Linda McMahon calling out a _“devastating trend”_ Tuesday.
>The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) — commonly referred to as the Nation’s Report Card — **showed just 35% of high school seniors were proficient in reading, the lowest score since the assessment began in 1992.**
>**The math score for 12th-graders was even worse, with just 22% achieving proficiency, the lowest point since the current test began in 2005.**
>_“American students are testing at historic lows across all of K-12,”_ McMahon said in response to the scores, which were extracted from tests administered to thousands of students in early 2024.
>_“Nearly half of America’s high school seniors are testing at below basic levels in math and reading,”_ she went on. _“The achievement gap is widening, and more high school seniors are performing below the basic benchmark in math and reading.”_

>**A federal judge has halted the Trump administration’s attempt to expand fast-track deportations across the United States, ruling that the policy violated illegal immigrants’ constitutional rights to due process.**
>In an Aug. 29 decision, **U.S. District Judge Jia Cobb temporarily blocked the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) January order authorizing _“expedited removal”_ for illegal immigrants arrested anywhere in the country who cannot prove two years of continuous residence.**
>As Tom Ozimek reports for The Epoch Times, **Cobb’s ruling pauses both the Jan. 21 DHS designation expanding expedited removal nationwide and the Jan. 23 guidance implementing it—known as the Huffman Memorandum—while the case proceeds.**
>She said the administration’s policy risks sweeping up people **who have lived in the country long enough to deserve full hearings before deportation.**
>Unlike new border crossers, Cobb wrote, such individuals _“have a weighty liberty interest in remaining here and therefore must be afforded due process.”_
>Under expedited removal, Cobb noted, **immigration officers, rather than immigration judges, can order deportations within days, often after a single interview and with little chance to gather evidence, consult counsel, or appeal.** That stripped-down process, she said, may be efficient at the border but is dangerously inadequate when applied to people with established ties in the interior.
>_“In defending this skimpy process, the Government makes a truly startling argument: that those who entered the country illegally are entitled to no process under the Fifth Amendment, but instead must accept whatever grace Congress affords them,“_ she wrote.
>_”Were that right, not only noncitizens, but everyone would be at risk.”_
>The Department of Homeland Security criticized the ruling, **saying it undermined the president’s constitutional authority to control immigration.**
>_“This activist judge’s ruling ignores the President’s clear authorities under both Article II of the Constitution and the plain language of federal law,”_ a DHS official told The Epoch Times in an emailed statement.
>_“President Trump has a mandate to arrest and deport the worst of the worst. We have the law, facts, and common sense on our side.”_
>While Cobb’s order blocks DHS’s designation and guidance implementing the expansion, **it leaves intact the long-standing use of expedited removal at ports of entry, at sea, and within 100 miles of the border for those apprehended within 14 days of entry.**
>The lawsuit was filed in January by Make the Road New York, **represented by the American Civil Liberties Union and its affiliates, who said the rule was unconstitutional.**
>_“Expanding expedited removal would give Trump a cheat code to circumvent due process and the Constitution, and we are again here to fight it,”_ Anand Balakrishnan, senior staff attorney with the ACLU’s Immigrants’ Rights Project, said in a statement in January.
>In June, the groups moved to block the policy while the case played out, **citing reports of ICE agents arresting immigrants at courthouses and shifting them into fast-track proceedings.**
>_“People who are complying with their legal obligations are basically being ambushed by ICE at their court appointments,”_ Balakrishnan said at the time.
>The Trump administration has argued that expedited removal is a necessary tool to swiftly deport people who entered the country unlawfully and to deter future illegal crossings.
>In their April motion to dismiss, they said the Homeland Secretary has _“sole and unreviewable discretion”_ to apply expedited removal nationwide to noncitizens who entered illegally within the past two years.
>**They also argued that the January designation was fully consistent with Congress’s mandate.**
>_“The designation lawfully applies to aliens who crossed illegally, since they were not previously inspected,”_ Justice Department attorneys wrote. _“To hold otherwise would reward such aliens for their illegal entry and significantly limit the operation of the expedited removal scheme.”_

>**Despite 18-year-old Mohammad I. being found guilty of torturing and assaulting a 13-year-old boy, the convicted man will only receive probation for two years.**
>Judge Rüdiger Baumann of the Dresden District Court condemned the act as _“sadistic and inhumane,”_ **noting the public outrage that the attack on the 13-year-old invoked.**
>According to the details of the case, Mohammad I. held the victim, identified as 13-year-old Tobi S., **captive and forced another 13-year-old to film the horrific torture. Tobi’s name was changed to protect his identity.**

>The incident stemmed from prior verbal altercations between Tobi and other teenagers, **including Mohammad I., in the border towns of Schmilka, Germany, and Hrensko, Czech Republic.**
>On Jan. 18, 2025, Mohammad I. ambushed Tobi, who was with another Syrian acquaintance in Hrensko, after Mohammad was informed in advance where Tobi would be from the Syrian. **He grabbed Tobi’s phone and headphones, and then threatened him with a telescopic baton, firecrackers, and a taser purchased from a local store.**

>Tobi S. was forced to continuously insult himself on camera, **with the torture and kidnapping lasting approximately three hours.**
>At one point, **Tobi was forced to put his head in a trash can and lick the rim of the trash.**
>**[...]** Mohammad I. then demanded €1,500 for the return of Tobi’s cell phone before releasing him to get the money.

>More than 9,000 young people headed to the polls in the Under-18 election before the state elections in Saxony and Thuringia, and the Alternative for Germany (AfD) crushed the competition in both votes, leaving the German political establishment reeling and issuing warnings.
>The youth vote comes just days before the real vote in regional elections in Saxony and Thuringia, where the AfD is slated to win the elections with over 30 percent of the vote.
>In Thuringia, the AfD scored 37.4 percent, an increase of almost 21 points compared to the 2019 youth election. The CDU gained around 7 points, jumping to 17.8 percent. The SPD scored 10.6 percent, a drop of over 3 points, and the Left Party 8.8 percent, a drop of 2.4 points.
>The BSW would reach 6.9 percent from a standing start. The Greens, however, have crashed, losing a whopping 18 points and standing now at only 3.7 percent.
>In other words, the push by Greens to allow under-18s to vote in elections may be leaving many in the party second-guessing their move.
>The vote is not binding and is seen as a political project used for “political education,” but serves as a barometer of where the youth’s voting intentions lie and who they could be voting for in the future.
>The vote was conducted at 150 polling stations in Saxony alone, according to the Saxony Children and Youth Council (KJRS), and saw the AfD there score 34.5 percent of the vote. The CDU came in second with 16.2 percent of the vote and the Left in third with 11.8 percent.
>The Greens are at an abysmal 5.7 percent, while the SPD is at 8.5 percent.
>In a surprise, only 4.8 percent of youth voted for the BSW. The party is polling quite high in the east, but it is supported by older former Left Party voters, many of whom yearn for a return to communism.
>The chairman of the Saxon Children and Youth Association, Vincent Drews, expressed shock at the results.
>“The AfD’s performance is of course worrying, as it shows that their ideas are also catching on with young people,” he said.
>He said allegedly “democratic actors,” many who want to outright ban the AfD, have “a clear mandate to continue to promote democratic values and stand up for them.”
>Despite the AfD’s expected strong showing in upcoming elections, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) is expected to seek out other partners to rule in both states, namely the far-left BSW. Both parties have vowed not to cooperate with the AfD and they may score enough votes to ensure this outcome unless the AfD pulls off a larger margin of victory than expected.

>The Israeli government sought legal advice on how to bypass US federal law governing the spreading of propaganda among the US population by foreign states, an investigation published Saturday by The Guardian in collaboration with journalists Lee Fang and Jack Poulson shows.
>US federal law requires the disclosure of foreign-backed lobbying campaigns, but leaked documents reviewed by The Guardian show the Israeli government sought legal advice concerning the law out of concern that Jewish and Christian Zionist lobbying groups working in coordination with the Israeli government would be required to register as foreign agents and disclose their ties to Israel.
>The documents, which include emails and legal memos originating from a hack of the Israeli justice ministry, show that Israeli officials proposed creating a new US nonprofit in order to continue Israel’s activities in the US while avoiding scrutiny under the law.
>Lee Fang and Jack Poulson write, "A legal strategy memo dated July 2018 noted that compliance with the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) would damage the reputation of several American groups that receive funding and direction from Israel and force them to meet onerous transparency requirements. A separate memo noted that donors would not want to fund groups registered under FARA."
>The memo says the Israeli government was worried about FARA because it compels registrants to "flag any piece of ‘propaganda’ that is distributed to two or more parties in the US, with a disclaimer stating that it was delivered by a foreign agent and then submit a copy of the ‘propaganda’ to the US Department of Justice within 48 hours."
>To prevent FARA registration and the stigma and scrutiny associated with it, the legal advisors suggested channeling funds through a third-party US nonprofit.
>The Israeli government sought legal advice from Sandler Reiff, a prominent election and campaign law firm in Washington, DC. Joseph E. Sandler, the former in-house general counsel to the Democratic National Committee, and Joshua I. Rosenstein, a widely-cited expert on FARA, provided the legal advice on behalf of the firm.
>Fang and Poulson add that the Israeli government was specifically concerned that a US-based nonprofit, "Kela Shlomo" (which translates to “Solomon’s Sling”) would be forced to register under FARA.
>The group was formed in 2017 by Israel’s Ministry of Strategic Affairs to distribute Israeli propaganda.
>Rebranded as "Concert" in 2018 and "Voices of Israel" in 2021, the group focused on undermining and warring against the BDS movement, which leads boycott, divestment, and sanctions campaigns against Israel in protest of its illegal occupation of Palestine and 'apartheid laws'.

>We have reached two weeks since the July 31st assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, and Iran's anticipated major retaliation on Israel which its leaders have been threatening still hasn't come.
>On Tuesday Tehran leaders appear to be walking back threats. They won't launch an attack based on key conditions, they say. Reuters and Times of Israel have cited three Iranian officials who said "An Iranian attack on Israel could be delayed amid hoped-for negotiations later this week for a hostage release and ceasefire deal in Gaza" which indicates that "a successful deal could hold Iran back from direct retaliation against Israel for alleged assassinating Hamas terror chief Ismail Haniyeh on its soil."
>So now the pressure is on to at least proclaim the beginnings of a deal by week's end, which has already happened several times before, after which a ceasefire agreement ultimately collapses based on wrangling over details and timing.
>Once again, Iran is signaling an indefinite timeline related to the threat of an attack: "The sources did not say how long Iran would allow for talks to progress before taking action," Reuters continues. And more:
>Several reports in recent days indicated Israel believes Iran intends to attack before Thursday’s renewed talks for a deal. The new comments appeared to signal that the attack would only take place after those talks, and only if they failed to yield what Iran deems to be sufficient results.
>"On Tuesday morning, Iranian state news agency Irna reported that Mr Pezeshkian had told Sir Keir that Western countries’ support for Israel had encouraged it to “continue atrocities” and threatened peace and security.
>“Pezeshkian stated that from the point of view of the Islamic Republic of Iran, war in any part of the world is not in the interest of any country, emphasizing that a punitive response to an aggressor is a legal right of states and a way to stop crime and aggression,” Irna added."

>AMD is warning about a high-severity CPU vulnerability named SinkClose that impacts multiple generations of its EPYC, Ryzen, and Threadripper processors. The vulnerability allows attackers with Kernel-level (Ring 0) privileges [that is, device drivers] to gain Ring -2 privileges and install malware that becomes nearly undetectable.
>Ring -2 is one of the highest privilege levels on a computer, running above Ring -1 (used for hypervisors and CPU virtualization) and Ring 0, which is the privilege level used by an operating system's Kernel.
>The Ring -2 privilege level is associated with modern CPUs' System Management Mode (SMM) feature. SMM handles power management, hardware control, security, and other low-level operations required for system stability.
>Due to its high privilege level, SMM is isolated from the operating system to prevent it from being targeted easily by threat actors and malware.
>Tracked as CVE-2023-31315 and rated of high severity (CVSS score: 7.5), the flaw was discovered by IOActive Enrique Nissim and Krzysztof Okupski, who named privilege elevation attack 'Sinkclose.'
>Full details about the attack will be presented by the researchers at tomorrow in a DefCon talk titled "AMD Sinkclose: Universal Ring-2 Privilege Escalation."
>The researchers report that Sinkclose has passed undetected for almost 20 years, impacting a broad range of AMD chip models.
>Ring -2 is isolated and invisible to the OS and hypervisor, so any malicious modifications made on this level cannot be caught or remediated by security tools running on the OS.
>Okupski told Wired that the only way to detect and remove malware installed using SinkClose would be to physically connect to the CPUs using a tool called a SPI Flash programmer and scan the memory for malware.
Access to Ring 0 on Windows is trivial:
>[...] Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) actors, like the North Korean Lazarus group, have been using BYOVD (Bring Your Own Vulnerable Driver) techniques or even leveraging zero-day Windows flaws to escalate their privileges and gain kernel-level access.
>Ransomware gangs also use BYOVD tactics, employing custom EDR killing tools they sell to other cybercriminals for extra profits.
>The notorious social engineering specialists Scattered Spider have also been spotted leveraging BYOVD to turn off security products.
>These attacks are possible via various tools, from Microsoft-signed drivers, anti-virus drivers, MSI graphics drivers, bugged OEM drivers, and even game anti-cheat tools that enjoy kernel-level access.
Whose lucky Russian \ Chinese state APT group will pounce on this to create another bootkit?

Worthy of Brave New World, which was compared to our days a light novel about teenage romance.

>The white population in America declined last year, according to the latest Census Bureau estimates. But, in Nashville’s metropolitan area, it surged more than anywhere else in the country.
>Across America in 2023, the Census counted more than 195 million white people (or 195,432,584 people, exactly) — down nearly half a million, or 0.2%, from the year before. That accounts for just over half the total U.S. population of about 334 million people.
>The greater Nashville metropolitan area, however, saw the country’s largest growth in its white population, which increased by 16,858 people, according to the Census.
>The Nashville metro area, which in the Census calculation includes Davidson County, Murfreesboro and Franklin, had a total population of about 2.1 million people in 2023, up more than 31,000 people from the year before.
>“We are seeing an influx of whites over other minorities, and I think it has to do with the type of jobs and industries that are coming here,” Rainey-Brown said.
>More companies around Nashville, Rainey-Brown said, need to recruit minority applicants to increase the area’s diversity.

>The biggest European car market, Germany, saw the sales of electric vehicles plummet by 36.8% in July from a year earlier, as EV sales are softening worldwide and as Berlin ended subsidies at the end of 2023.
>New car registrations of battery vehicle vehicles (BEVs) in Germany slumped to 30,762 vehicles in July from the same month of 2023, the latest data rom the German Federal Motor Transport Authority showed on Monday. July marked the largest annual drop in EV sales since the government ended subsidies for EV acquisitions in December 2023.
>While BEV sales plunged, the overall car market held relatively flat. New car registrations of gasoline-powered passenger vehicles rose by 0.1% year-over-year in July, and diesel car sales increased by 1.4%.
>Tesla’s new registrations slumped by 36.7% in July compared to the same month of 2023, and was among the worst-performing foreign brands in Germany last month. Renault, Hyundai, and Fiat, among others, also saw their sales on the German market fall in July compared to a year earlier.
>EV demand has visibly softened over the past year, leaving legacy automakers in the U.S., Germany, and France struggling with an overcapacity of their EV models as they realize that the transition to fully electrified transportation will be taking longer than they thought.
>Earlier this year, BEV sales in the United States fell for the first time since the onset of Covid in 2020.
>With lower EV sales than expected, major carmakers in the U.S. and Europe are scaling back production of electric vehicles amid overcapacity and are rethinking their ambitious EV sales goals.
>Rising concerns about EV capital costs, uncertainties around a number of elections this year, especially in the U.S., and a shortage of rapid-charging stations are the three key factors slowing the EV momentum, Goldman Sachs Research analyst Kota Yuzawa said in May.
>The slowdown in global EV sales has hit the profits of the major EV battery manufacturers this year, too.

>As with most of the rest of Europe, the birth rate in Germany is crashing, with new data showing it is falling to its lowest level since 2009, with just 1.36 children per woman being born
>The newly-released figures from the Federal Institute for Population Development show that a sharp drop in just a few years. In 2021, the rate was still 1.57 children per woman. The German institute produced its report in conjunction with Stockholm University.
>Such a sharp “decline in fertility” within such a short period of time is “unusual,” the authors of the study explained, with “phases of declining fertility rates” being much slower to manifest and over a longer timeframe.
>"“The already far too low birth rate in Germany has fallen again: from 1.57 children per woman in 2021 to 1.36 children in autumn 2023. That the media immediately rush to blame the causes of this development on the Ukraine war or blaming other recent developments does not change the core problem: There is not the proper appreciation for families and children in our country – not politically, not financially and not socially."
>"We want massive tax relief for families and a welcoming culture for our children. Specifically, this means: increasing the child allowance, introducing family tax splitting, complete tax deductibility of child-related expenses, lowering the VAT for children’s items to the reduced rate. In addition, we want to introduce a repayment of €20,000 for payments already made for pension contributions at the birth of each child."
