that article doesn't mention that Project 2025 will privatize the National Flood Insurance Program under FEMA which will mean pretty much nobody in flood prone areas would be able to afford flood insurance.

So. I live in Tennessee. All my elected officials are Republicans who deny climate change is real. A bunch of them surveyed the flooding damage from the climate change fueled hurricane and said how awful it is, while still denying humans cause climate change. Oh, and they enthusiastically support a presidential candidate who will dismantle NOAA, NHC, FEMA, and the federal flood insurance program. They're all such power hungry suck ups who don't care about actual citizens. #HurricaneHelene

it will probably be out for a couple weeks in the worst areas. Power infrastructure has been destroyed in so many places and it takes time to rebuild. After the 2011 tornadoes in my area some people didn't have power for a month and that was nothing compared to this disaster.

Yesterday I went to a workshop about reptiles and amphibians in Tennessee. The instructor is an expert on salamanders and it was a great presentation about the lifecycle and habitat of frogs, salamanders, snakes, and lizards. Then someone else got out a bunch of reptiles and we got to hang out with them. My favorite was the blue tongued skink which sadly is only native to Australia. It was too hot and dry to go outside and look for any. #Reptiles #Salamanders #Tennessee

because of our stupid insurance system I had to close my small business five years ago when my husband got laid off and we lost his corporate insurance. It was even more expensive back then--fluctuating costs are another problem. I had to get a corporate job I don't really like just to have affordable health insurance.

this is a decent plan that actually covers doctors visits and drugs with a reasonable out of pocket limit but it's obscenely expensive. Part of the reason is I'm in my mid 50s. The older you are the more expensive it gets. Keep in mind that insurance companies also routinely deny care and it's almost impossible to find mental health care that would take this specific insurance.

that's one problem, but cost is a huge issue. We have the Obamacare program but it's crazy expensive. People with very low incomes or no incomes don't qualify. People with low/median incomes quality for a subsidy that makes it cheap or free. People with higher incomes but who aren't rich have to pay full price. This is how much per month I'd have to pay for a crappy plan that pays for literally nothing until I paid an additional $9100 for stuff.

I go caving and we usually need trucks to get to the remote areas. Everyone always suggests going ahead and scratching a new to you vehicle so you don't worry about it until it inevitably happens. I have spilled a lot of coffee in all my vehicles but not yogurt 😱

Wow. I own the Affinity design software products as an alternative to Adobe Creative Suite and Canva recently bought them. I bet they'll destroy that product line too. I think I'll delete my Canva account, this is just ridiculous.

good!! I really hate drones when I'm hiking. A few years ago I went to a gorgeous waterfall in North Carolina but couldn't even get a picture of it because some guy had his drone right in front of it. And it was noisy, so there was that. I know people who take drones into caves and that's super annoying too. A cave conservancy I belong to bans drones on their properties.

yes!!! A good friend of mine had colon cancer in his family but didn't think he needed a colonoscopy because he ate healthy. After seeing a doctor about abdominal pain, he was diagnosed with colon cancer that had also spread to his liver. He died of liver cancer when he was 53. If he'd had a colonoscopy they would have caught it. I still miss him.

and yes I know Republicans in my state are messing with it, but it doesn't count as "universal healthcare" or "affordable" when one political party can screw with it so much. Oh and friend with cancer got laid off in 2020. After he burned thru his Cobra he didn't qualify for the ACA since he didn't have a job and didn't qualify for Medicaid because he owed a home. He raised $700/month for an ACA plan thru GoFundMe to pay for chemo.

I hate the ACA. When my husband lost his job in '18 and I went to sign up for a plan, the cheapest one was $2600/month that didn't pay for anything until we met a $14,000 deductible. A plan with copays was $3600/month with a $14k deductible. I had to close my business and go back to work for another company just for affordable health insurance. Still stuck in that trap. It's down to $800/month with $9000 deductible which is still too expensive.

So yesterday while driving around in rural Tennessee to go hiking, I spotted a new house that is completely black. The roof is black metal, the siding, shutters, garage doors, and front door are all black. The only things not black were plain wood porch supports. My first thought was WHY. It gets REALLY hot here, who would possibly think that's a good idea. Second thought: maybe a vampire lives there. That's the only plausible explanation. Really wish I could have gotten a photo.

I decided to make this recipe during lunch and OMG it's good. I found harissa at Trader Joe's and got some. It's a Tunisian spice mixture with hot peppers and some other things. I didn't have butter beans so used navy beans. Also used spinach instead of kale and used a lot more than a handful. Next time will probably halve harissa and/or red pepper flakes 🔥 Spicy and creamy, high protein, high fiber, plus it only took about 15 minutes to make it. #Vegan #Cooking

Funny observation of the week. I've been watching Midsomer Murders, and there's a background sound in some of the outdoor scenes I thought was a raven or a crow. Last night I had subtitles on for some reason and during one of those noises the subtitle said "Fox Barking." Another vegan food experiment yesterday that worked great was Parmesan cheese. I saw this last week and decided to try it and OMG it was so easy and turned out great! It tastes like Parmesan. I just grated some and it grates like Parmesan. Posting the recipe below in a comment. Just put everything in a blender until smooth, pour into two glass containers, and steam for 45 minutes.
