Bow season is open now, rifle season will open October 26. Residents can buy over the counter elk tags (multiple) as well as draw for special permits. Some areas in Montana will have different sex regulataions. I am not sure about non resident tags, though I believe there are some tags that are over the counter for them as well.

It was suggested that it would help convert more of your material to biochar instead of into ash. I am not satisfied with the way I did it though. I packed the barrel with material instead of starting small and building it up. Next time I will try that and compare the results.

Outstanding. I processed more during the winter with a covered hotel pan in the fireplace than I made during the warm months. Would like to get the same results/output as the hotel pan without the amount of waste and time tending...hence the rocket plans

Biochar is made with high heat and low oxygen. This was an experiment of sorts. I started the fire after packing the barrel with wood and once a fire had started on the top and the coals spread around, I tilted the barrel to provide a rolling effect for the gasses that the wood compounds give off to ignite. You can do also make it with a standard barrel and just keep adding to the fire right at the point where the burned wood shatters when tapped and is starting to ash. A cone shaped kiln is even better at making it, but either more expensive, or harder to make.
My future plans are to procure a 30 gallon barrel with a lid that I will pack full of material to turn into biochar and then place it in the 55 gallon drum with some air ventilation holes and a tall chimney to make a rocket burner. The inside barrel will never catch fire, but will get hot enough to pyrolyze (offgas) and my end result will be much better and a much higher percentage.

The gel has an anti-germination agent in it to prevent the seeds from sprouting while in the tomato. The fermentation creats a weak acid that strips the gel away from the seed. Dry them after and they are ready for storage.

I would ask them if "I'm pretty sure your son could handle himself if he felt threatened" a green light for your son to deal with this as he sees fit without any repercussions? I don't know anything about the specifics, but I bought my daughter ice cream when she punched the girl that was consistently targeting her for bullying and the school did nothing.

When you buy a 1/2 or 1/4 of a beef, it is with the understanding that it will be processed into the cuts you want at a butcher shop. Picking it up as a whole piece is possible, but any butcher will ask appropriate questions to make sure you are not getting yourself into more work than you anticipate.

I get it...its all new. Not everything is going to work seamlessly even 50% of the time. I had to get up and do some work around the shop and come back. Otherwise things might not have gone well.

Mine just dropped to 84 today after 1 month. I noticed about 2 weeks in, it started dropping a bit, but when I watered, it raised back up a bit and maintained (mine is indoors and I don't think it needs water every day...and its in a IBC tote as well).

Whew! Upgraded my Alby to Alby Hub this morning. Somewhere, somehow, something went wrong. Went through the process and it seemed as everything was k. Then, when I went into Primal to get onto Nostr, everything was gone and Alby was asking me nonstop to approve things. I must have clicked about 20 approvals for Alby, and I got to my feed and all I had was what was popular in the past 24hrs. My account was blank. I tried to import my key and nothing happened.
About an hour later, I noticed that my Alby browser extension had a (1) behind my name. I had somehow created a second Alby extension profile. Click to the original and reload Primal......twice, and everything seems to be working now.

Seems that is legitimate. Looks like there was a fairly recent (2020) study using a weak acid soak for a short amount of time (30-60min) to simulate the fermentation process with a high degree of success.

Day 23 of the modified J/S compost. It has cooled into the low 100's, there has been several flushes of surface mushrooms. Seems to be at a low point in mushroom growth at this time, however. It has settled about 8-10 inches overall.

Night sky over Bannack.
Founded by gold prospectors on Grasshopper Creek in the territory of Montana in 1862, Bannack briefly became the territorial capital of Montana in 1864 until Virginia City took its place. Being very remote, only served by the Montana Trail (running north-south from Utah to SW Montana), it still grew to over 10000 residents. Sheriff Plummer was accused of leading a secret gang of road agents that was rumored to have murdered at least 100 in the area. Plummer was hanged, along with two of his deputies in January of 1864 without trial. A number of Plummer's associates were lynched and others banished on pain of death if they ever returned. Twenty-two individuals were accused, informally tried, and hanged by the Vigilance Committee (the Montana Vigilantes) of Bannack and Virginia City. Nathaniel Pitt Langford, the first superintendent of Yellowstone National Park, was a member of that vigilance committee. The last residents of Bannack moved in the 1970s.
More than 132,000 ounces of gold were mined in Bannack in the 1860's, all of it placer gold.

The northern lights put on a show last night in MT. From what I have heard, they were seen as far south as FL in the US. Pretty awesome show. Just cell phone pics, so nothing too stunning as far as quality.

One of the best things about living in the north is the night skies when the northern lights are active. This was taken a few miles from my house near an abandoned homestead. I was driving home and just so happened to have my camera and tripod in the truck with me as I drove by. I hopped out and snapped several long exposure shots of the scene before me.
I have other pictures of this little shack that I will post on later days, some at night using some light filling to more accentuate the homestead, but with the skies lit up like they were, that would be just a detraction from the main event.
Fun fact: There is a huge raven nest in the inside rafters of this little cabin that a pair of ravens use to rear their young every year. It is perhaps 4 foot in diameter and just awesome.
Not so fun fact: Time and Montana's elements have not been kind to this little cabin. In the time since I have taken this picture (4 years), this cabin has twisted on itself and is very near to collapse. I will be saddened the day that I drive by after some high winds or perhaps a particularlly heavy snowfall and see that it has given up.

These may look like trees killed off by a wildfire, but in fact are what are known as "Bobbysock trees" or "silent dog trees". They are trees that have grown where a newly formed hydrothermic area has moved into. The trees take up an abundance of dissolved silica which interfers with the sap movement which kills the tree, leaving behind the white tissue exposed as the bark falls away...hence the silent dog tree...no bark.
