We started a poll earlier at #debphoshfund to pick a maps/navigation app. @npub1kzg…mdvv suggested we come up with a list of desired features and check with the maintainers of the app we pick that they are in alignment and open to accepting contributions for those to avoid conflicts later or having to fork. yes, irc needs a bouncer to effectively participate asynchronously. It is difficult to use a mobile app due to this. Else you will usually miss replies to your questions. ircv3 has added this feature but most popular servers don't have support for this. These also have better moderation options.

poddery.com offer #diaspora #xmpp and #matrix services. We did not ask email as mandatory (but due to spam we have closed registrations) when registration was open. People can use these services for personal messaging, and we recommend end to end encryption so even we/admins don't see any plain text / unencrypted data.

poll is part of a bigger process of identifying important issues for GNU/Linux mobile. Deciding which options come on poll itself needs discussion. So we need a dedicated place and tool designed for such a use case. We will be having more polls and everyone is not on mastodon. Someone already answered it is a self hosted loomio instance which is Free Software under AGPLv3. The poll is shared on other forums, matrix/xmpp groups etc too.

We can document this approach if more people find this approach is useful and interesting.
Summary: Basically it needs a survey of the most important missing features, then find the most popular items through a poll. Once we have found the most important features we set a bounty and then find developers.
We can create a website and explain each step to make more people participate in this model.

I think this model is important when there is not enough developer interest (or the interest is too fragmented - many developers are excited to create a new project instead of contributing to an existing project. sometimes the project maintainers are not very welcoming to new contributors as well). This is not entirely the fault of the developer as getting a job usually requires experience in the current buzzword in your resume. #FreeSoftware

In #Prav and #debphoshfud we are experimenting with a new model - users prioritizing which features are important and then crowd fund the most popular demands. There are at least a small number of developers who'd like to get paid working on #FreeSoftware projects (though it is still a bit difficult to find those). I hope more users will get involved in these projects or try to build similar projects for other areas.

Traditionally #FreeSoftware projects are driven by developers or for profit companies (sometimes governments funding specific projects). Users without programming skills usually can't influence the direction of a project. People talk about developers not getting paid for developing Free Software and users demanding more from volunteers. I think we have to rethink about this model and try to address this disconnect. @npub1eyk…ndu6 and https://codema.in/debphoshfund are trying to address this.

If you are looking to buy a new phone, consider #FLX1 from @npub1pl0…qn57. You can still run Android apps if you need to, but for most things you can use the same apps that you use on laptop (many of them adapted to fit on a smaller screen like I'm using Firefox right now). FuriOS is based on #Debian #Trixie. I have a Purism Librem 5, but most people in my circle find it very expensive/unaffordable, but FLX1 is very much comparable price to most Android phones of similar spec. #FreeSoftware.

thanks for the detailed review. The biggest issue with my Librem 5 is battery life. Suspend gives better battery life, but no notifications or alarms except call/sms. Also no GPS due to a hardware bug, which is fixed in new revisions. Good to see FLX1 as an option next time I buy a phone. Importing to India can be a hassle and costly affair (I had to pay huge import duty for Librem 13).

I gave it a try, but it only allows downloading maps of an entire country - would be fine for small countries, but for India it is 2.2 GB where as I mostly would need only a single state - Organic Maps already provides that level of granularity.

I'd assume you are using byzantium. Hopefully we will see crimson soon, which will have some improvements. You could also try mobian bookworm which is reasonably stable. I'm currently using Mobian trixie, which has some regressions like missing echo cancellation and unstable modem data connection.

which device and what OS? Geary works reasonably well. As for NextCloud, most features work with gnome native apps - contacts, calendar works and nautlius can handle the files as well. I get 12 hours idle time when automatic suspend is enabled, but still I have to carry a power bank if I go outside. Voice call sound quality seems fine (except the echo problem with pipewire, used to work with pulseaudio and as a work around, I use a headphone). gps is broken in hardware for me :(

calls, sms works well already on Mobian/Librem 5. Matrix mostly works with nheko and fractal (no audio calls yet). Bluetooth works with pipewire but we need to fix echo on the other side in calls. I think putting more effort to Dino might be a better option for #XMPP support on GNU/Linux phones. If at all some one still wants to maintain chatty, I think sharing libdino (it is not a separate library but maintained inside Dino itself https://github.com/dino/dino/tree/master/libdino) will be a better option that libpurple.
