I switched to Startpage as default after seeing AI in DDG. It is also based in EU. There is also mojeek, which don't have good results always, but they have their own crawler.

Did codeberg or visa / mastercard start doing it already? It'd be harder, but bank transfers or European payment processors would work (Is there a European alternative for visa / master card?) Or is entire SWIFT network already enforcing sanctions. At least for India and China, we have local payment processors (RuPay cards and UPI).

How is Europe or other countries required to follow sanctions by USA? If a service provider is also doing business in US, they may be compelled. But codeberg hosts their own servers and as far as I know they are not required to follow US laws. Do you have any sources to prove Europe also follow the same sanctions as USA?
Politics has many complicated factors. Something that applies to a US company don't necessarily apply to companies not operating in USA.

Would you consider building with libwebrtc by default until gstreamer webrtc is ready?
GPL incompatibility of BoringSSL is resolved last month, as they followed OpenSSL and switched to Apache 2.0 license.

#Signal is better than #WhatsApp, but still centralized. The entire world depending on a Single organization is not very sustainable. We have Quicksy and Prav both giving the same convenience of Signal without lock-in. #Quicksy and #Prav users can talk to each other and to any other #XMPP app.
To actually practice the freedom to improve a software, we should be able to self host the server part (not necessarily each person has to self host, but that option can offer real choice).

#GNOME Web is truly independent from #Google. Though still dependent on #Apple, they don't have as much power as Google. It is still better than a Google monopoly. And #webkit is developed with proper APIs and meant to be embedded in other applications unlike Google's #blink.
One big feature missing is support for audio / video calls (webrtc). With #BoringSSL switching to Apache 2.0, a big blocker for webrtc support is resolved.

But unfortunately Quicksy is mostly driven by a single person from Germany and mass adoption and publicity seem to be not a priority for them. Can anyone using #firefox in #Ubuntu confirm, if you need to click "I agree" to use firefox ? Does it show ToS before you start using firefox ?
Clicking or not clicking "I agree" makes a crucial difference in mozilla getting your permission to use your data. Unlike proprietary software or services, you can get #firefox from a different source without agreeing to this shit. Just the name may be different or they might have made it better for you.

We are in the process of shutting down the #diaspora instances at diasp.in and poddery.com If possible, we'd like to keep some public profile and tag pages in the same url as static html files. diaspora is a ruby on rails application, wordpress and django has tools to export static pages from an instance, we need to explore if similar tools exist for #ruby on #rails. Simple wget would have been enough if it was not auto scrolled pages. Would you like to try and help us for preserving history?

Traditionally #FreeSoftware projects are driven by developers or for profit companies (sometimes governments funding specific projects). Users without programming skills usually can't influence the direction of a project. People talk about developers not getting paid for developing Free Software and users demanding more from volunteers. I think we have to rethink about this model and try to address this disconnect. @npub1eyk…ndu6 and https://codema.in/debphoshfund are trying to address this.

If you are looking to buy a new phone, consider #FLX1 from @npub1pl0…qn57. You can still run Android apps if you need to, but for most things you can use the same apps that you use on laptop (many of them adapted to fit on a smaller screen like I'm using Firefox right now). FuriOS is based on #Debian #Trixie. I have a Purism Librem 5, but most people in my circle find it very expensive/unaffordable, but FLX1 is very much comparable price to most Android phones of similar spec. #FreeSoftware.

which device and what OS? Geary works reasonably well. As for NextCloud, most features work with gnome native apps - contacts, calendar works and nautlius can handle the files as well. I get 12 hours idle time when automatic suspend is enabled, but still I have to carry a power bank if I go outside. Voice call sound quality seems fine (except the echo problem with pipewire, used to work with pulseaudio and as a work around, I use a headphone). gps is broken in hardware for me :(

calls, sms works well already on Mobian/Librem 5. Matrix mostly works with nheko and fractal (no audio calls yet). Bluetooth works with pipewire but we need to fix echo on the other side in calls. There is only an experimental support on mobian for Fairphone 4 though https://wiki.debian.org/InstallingDebianOn/Fairphone/Fairphone4

I think putting more effort to Dino might be a better option for #XMPP support on GNU/Linux phones. If at all some one still wants to maintain chatty, I think sharing libdino (it is not a separate library but maintained inside Dino itself https://github.com/dino/dino/tree/master/libdino) will be a better option that libpurple.
