i also appreciate that it sticks closer to browser APIs than server APIs. I’ve taken to writing programs how I did before all this node nonsense became popular.
it’s possible to write whole programs that run either raw in a browser with no frameworks whatsoever and also work server side with no modifications. we can shed a *lot* of ballast- especially if we structure a program to use as many “universal” modules as possible, minimising server specific code

i have been using deno for a while and, not sure it even needs support for package.json and node_modules to be fully usable instead of node for new projects.
the alternative mechanisms it provides for accomplishing the same tasks (including using node packages) is just so much nicer and mostly just works. I suspect you’d only need package.json and node_modules for corner cases of backwards compatibility

A long while ago I posted my opinion that deliberate and continued association with the GPL (gnu public license) was tacit endorsement of Richard Stallman and the FSF’s condoning and protection of his actions. I did even clarify that I understood switching to a different license was difficult and what I expected from projects with the license was at least acknowledgement of the FSF’s problems and a clear plan to move away from the GPL.

so systems like typescript create a situation where if you have a module that can do 90% of what you want, but one parameter is too many, or it's a string instead of an enum, or it just plain has all the right types but the type NAME doesn't match? you have no choice but to make a copy of it with the right name.
This is not modular reuse.
And don't get me started on "interfaces". It's formalising a process that should just be assumed. Type systems should not get in the way of reuse

2. tight coupling between an object and its environment- usually caused by constructing a whole system at once, and creating specific connections between the pieces
3. proliferation of specific types. This is what I can't stand about systems like typescript, or the type system introduced by actionscript. Imagine a lego set where every piece could only connect to one other specific piece? it's not a modular system you have a jigsaw puzzle

1. Scripts could be attached directly to buttons/sprites
2. there was *enough* built into the base platform that you did not need to pull in dependencies

Even on something as flexible and dynamic as the web platform, if a client sees a button on a site somewhere, I can not "simply" copy and paste it. I must track down all the css, html and javascript, in however many minified and compressed bundles they may exist in

One of the things I think a lot about is the fact that OOP *promised* more modularity and reusability.
The idea was that if an object in a program acted more like an object in real life, then it could be more modular and reusable.
And yet, to use objects in a Classical OOP system usually requires work that feels a lot like microsurgery- You can take in a library's *entire* class heirarchy to use one object.
or carefully resupply an class with its dependencies in its new context.

it includes interactive tutorials and loads of ready to reuse premade assets
you vould just draw anywhere

there’s no shortage of hypercard clones of course but where they all go tragically wrong is adding too many features.
if i want a programming environment that has 1000 classes and controls widgets and doodads and crusted on legacy i can spend the four years learning cocoa or android or gtk etc
hypercard’s strength is you could get productive on it in an hour reading the included tutorials. the clones… assume you already learned hypercard and just need to reorient to wherever stuff moved

it seems obvious that 4th should be scrollx but it shouldn’t if you think about needing to do that within an item while it is zoomed

we even have two that are somewhat standard for scrolling vertically and scrolling horizontally. we sorta settled on using either a gesture or a modifier key for zoom but i think we should just give up the pretence and have at least four knobs on every mouse/keyboard: x,y scroll, zoom, and the fourth for back/forward; in history, or a group of items, what we usually swipe left and right for

this is i think also why i need my vim disclaimer
i don’t feel that strongly about vim in particular- all modal text editors are bad. all text editors are bad. all software is bad. This is the premise of all my posts. But the strong defense of vim I very reliably recieve every single time i am critical of it- and the projection on me that it’s *me* being emotional about it- is some indication of the level of pain vim is causing people to lead to this strength of cognitive dissonance responses

With technology, especially complicated frameworks, beware The Fallacy Of Sunk Costs;
cognitive dissonance is when your actions conflict with your values
cognitive dissonance *theory* predicts that when this happens, people tend to adjust their values to explain their actions instead of changing their actions
and so when you find that you have spent the last 5 years, painfully learning every detail of a sophisticated front end framework
