As activists, we were told it’s easier to get a voter to switch parties than get a non-voter to vote. I always try to push people who don’t vote due to dissatisfaction with what’s on offer to spoil their ballot papers with a comment on their feelings. Spoilt ballots are (in counts I’ve attended) shown to all the candidates to confirm they are invalid. The candidates actually see their comments.

I think it’s misleading in a purely statistical sense to talk about non-voters as one block. It stands to reason that fractions of them support or at least lean towards different parties. Others may be opposed to voting on principle, and the largest block is probably people who just don’t think about it because it doesn’t reach a high enough level of priority in their lives.

The one good thing about the polls showing high support for Reform is that the ‘wasted vote’ argument has largely been removed as a block to people voting with their conscience. Green Party policies have long been popular in blind tests but they just weren’t seen as viable in first past the post elections. Now, the 2 major parties have been torpedoed by their own hubris and inability to realise the ground has moved from beneath them.

it’s completely illogical. Suppose I do a degree and then get a job in a drug company. I work on medical drugs for my entire career. Why would a government put an extra tax burden on me than if I didn’t do the degree and worked on something less beneficial? Not to say every graduate is doing something noble but without those types of job, the country is worse off.

it’s irrelevant to the arrests made this week anyway. Holding up a sign saying you support a group which, by the government’s own admission , you don’t know what they have been banned for - isn’t terrorism. Nobody’s saying “let’s do violent things” - they’re saying the right to protest shouldn’t be removed without due cause and explanation.

I’ve worked for the NHS since 2008 and have witnessed restructuring several times. It doesn’t improve efficiency, doesn’t reduce management, and takes up everyone’s time doing it. What helps is reducing the burden of reporting upward so that the time can be spent on communication internally and with patients. Staff spend so long reporting what they are doing that they have little time left to actually do it.

the levelling around Xmas is interesting in both years followed by a sharp rise. Hard to tell if this is before or over the holidays. Too soon for back to work to have caused the rise so maybe people less likely to check in to hospital just before Xmas and then catch up as soon as it’s over?

I ask myself the question why I’m happy on Mastodon and journalists aren’t. The difference seems to be that they want 2 things: 1. an algorithm to save them having to hunt for stuff (which I would argue is part of their job) and 2. Reaching large numbers of followers. They are still living in the world of count the ‘likes’ and so will repeat the same pattern as Twitter, Facebook etc. until the latest new kid on the block becomes tired and jaded and they all move on again.

I suppose better management would help but it has to be given the power to make decisions and get them actioned in a timely manner. You also need budgets which extend beyond the current year. So much time is wasted planning without knowing what the pay award will be - which has to be found out of a budget which is decided year by year, that even the best managers couldn’t achieve optimal efficiency.

While this strategy might seem appealing to a pro-PR neutral, it is deeply flawed. First of all, what happens to all those Green Party members and activists who live in these dropped seats? At best they’d be sidelined, at worst they’d leave and the party would lose cohesion and become regional rather than national. Most likely Starmer would not U turn and support PR no matter how bad his polling numbers looked. Labour are entrenched in the idea of being The One Opposition when they’re not in power. They won’t give that up. Thirdly, did it work in France? Yes, they stopped a far fight majority but haven’t got anything even vaguely resembling a progressive government. There are always calls for progressives to put aside their differences to fight the right. 2/

popular, the election system is skewed enough to let them win. Greens have always been open to pacts at a local level and Labour constantly refuse to participate. Even something as basic as Labour standing down in one of the 4 Green seats won’t happen yet always the pressure on the Greens to stand down.
Finally, you don’t defeat fascism by clever politics. You defeat fascism by fighting it everywhere and in every way you can. This won’t do that.

The key thing is that people continue to support and protect those that are targets of the fascists. What the right wing want is Asian and Muslim communities to close ranks due to fear and isolation. The more integrated everything is, the more they become the outsiders. These anti fascist protests were a good statement which needs to be built upon.

No, it wouldn’t be worse for Gazans - it would be worse for Americans. Trump will be terrible in many ways but this whole “we can influence Biden” line only works if it’s backed up by the real threat of removing support in an election.
