My biggest regret is ever posting photos of my kids on big centralized social platforms. At the time, it felt “easy” to share snapshots of my life with family. But looking back, I regret it deeply.
I didn’t fully understand the privacy risks I exposed my children to. And I didn’t see that I was also offering myself—and my stories—as the product for these companies. My family came to see vacation pictures, but they stayed…and kept scrolling. The platforms pulled them into divisive, rage-driven content, feeding news addictions and making money off every click.
I’m sorry. I’m embarrassed. My attempt at connection became a gateway that helped entrench my loved ones in the very systems I wish I had avoided.

Welcome to the club! Simple small and energy efficient: Beelink or Geekom. But those are the “new” option. My favorite upcycled servers are based on the HP Elite Desk SFF (Small Form Factor). My ProxMox cluster runs a few of these. You can look for the used ones with the lower TPU processor if you want them to suck less power.

I’ve continued thinking about this all day. I think that the economics of zaps is what could make #nostr different from anything g else built before. ActivityPub started with leaning into aspects of decentralized authority. Nostr and Zaps take this to a new level. On other traditional platforms, the incentive for monetization is not from the user, but from the platform. The more people scroll, the more the platform has chances to capture advertisers revenue. But with nostr we could build an ecosystem that’s not driven by ad revenue. We could encourage an ecosystem that’s driven through value. What would it look like if you could filter feeds to show what has been zapped the most? What if you could filter by what has been zapped recently? What if you could filter by what has the most unique number of zaps? What if you could filter by what has the highest average stats per zap? All of these views could tell a different story. But the point is that somebody has to invest into the story or into the post to signify that it has value to them. Imagine a world where you have an audience the size of some of these audiences on these other platforms, but it’s entirely powered by a value system of the participants. Even if the hosting platform took a small percentage just for maintenance costs, we could build a really compelling ecosystem. Use your zaps as your voice!

Yesterday, we laid my grandfather to rest. He was a great man who taught me so much about life, faith in Jesus, and the importance of humility. But one thing he definitely was not—a cook! I’m traveling this week to a funeral of my grandfather. He was 95. Can you imagine the changes we will see by the time we hit 95? At 95, he lived through such incredible changes - from a world without computers to smartphones, from the early days of television to streaming, from the space race to private space travel.
What will the world look like in 50 years? The thought of the future brings me both great joy and fear.
