“Where’s Alan?” she's asking me. “He dumped me,” I hear myself say; I can’t see very well right now because the tears are welling up again. “Oh, holy shit,” Annie says; I fall into her outstretched arms, barely aware of anything else around me.

My bra is digging in. Why am I even still wearing it? Blinking, I open my eyes. I’m in bed? I immediately look beside me, but the spot is empty. I can smell coffee. I throw back the duvet and…oh, dear. I’m still dressed.

Have your characters’ journeys affected your own life? If so, how?
Well, not that I'm aware of.
But my ex-wife decided 5 years ago that me starting to write all day wasn't what she had signed up for.
Does that count?

Spacious, modern, and flooded with light—so that our… oh, right. Children. Shit. I could burst into tears all over again right now. But I don’t want to show that kind of vulnerability, so I swallow it down and smile, “Yes, it certainly cost enough.” And it did. One and a half million, including the land. It took a year; some rooms still smell a bit like paint. “Bas?”, comes towards me, footsteps draw closer, and then Annie is standing in the kitchen with the policewoman.

She just shakes her head and walks to the front door. “You're alright?” he smiles at me now; I have no choice but to nod “Yeah, it’s okay.” It isn’t, but what does he know about it? He’s a man. It will never be okay again. “So? How’s business?” he asks, trying to distract me; honestly, I don’t even know “Good, can’t complain. Always busy.” “Can imagine that.” he nods, looking around appreciatively, and almost brazenly. Yes, it’s a beautiful house.

What character from one of your own books or someone else's would you want to spend a day with? What would you do?
Dr. Robert Green, Mika Irving, or Kateri Myiow. I would make a meal called "Sauerbraten mit Klößen" until they can't move no more, and then try to endlessly question them about anything of their respective culture they're allowed or be okay with to answer.

"No problem," she says dismissively, sitting down at the table with me. "Right, she’s on her way," the police officer says as he enters and immediately swaps places with his colleague: "You look a lot better now, though." He instantly draws a stern look from his colleague. But his unintended joke strikes a chord, and I can’t help but smile a little: "Thanks." Mimicking Khaby Lame, he holds out his hands toward me while casting a reproachful glance at his colleague.

She helps me up; her colleague is on the phone outside the house. Guided by my verbal directions, the policewoman steers my still-wobbly steps to the kitchen and seats me at the dining table. The glasses are sitting there; she takes one, fills it at the fridge, and hands it to me. It’s nothing special, but cold. It helps immediately; my vision clears up a bit. It’s almost dark outside! I only realize it just now. "Feeling better?" she asks kindly, and I nod "Yes, a lot. Thanks."

He nods, though, “I’ll see to it; she’ll probably be here in a bit.” He leaves, and his colleague asks, “Shall we have a glass of water? That’ll probably do you good.” Yes. Yes, I want some.

What are three personality strengths your MC has?
Despite her young age, Kessy has gone through a lot so she doesn't flinch when seeing something that disgust others.
She's also almost always in good spirits, so she serves as an anchor of calm to others around her.
Thirdly, Kessy is a quick thinker thus she can adapt fast to strange or uncommon changes.
All in all, Kessy is in a way perfect for the unpredictabilities laying ahead, but little does she herself know…

…“It’s okay. He didn’t deserve you.” I agree, so I let her go. I nod: “I’ll be all right.” His colleague strokes my arm again, and he asks: “Should we call anyone for you? It’s no trouble at all.” “Annie,” is the only name that comes to mind. He nods: “Right away, no problem. What’s her last name?”

“Oh, I’m sorry,” she says. She means it; I can feel it. “It’s okay,” I say, waving it off and trying to grin; “he was an asshole.” But I can’t convince her—I can see that plain as day. So she glances behind her, looks back at me, and holds out her arms with a pitying expression the way you would for a small child. I can’t help but give in. No one could. So I start sobbing again on her shoulder while she gently rubs my back. “It’s all right,” she whispers softly, …

Besides minor scratches and a mild hypothermia, none.

Today at #Work I needed some stuff from another part of the company which is located right across the road. I told the transport guy in the morning I need it by noon, at 12:30 p.m. it wasn't done.
So I mounted the next forklift and hauled it myself.
As I was back, the transport guy saw me, and one could have knocked his eyes right off with a stick; that's how far they got out of his head. 👀
Well, at least now he knows that he's not the only one who can—and is allowed to—operate a forklift…😁

If your MC was elected mayor of your own town, would you stay or move? Why?
The part of mayor in my…um…let's say "village"…is more a largely ceremonial role than any kind of a real governmental, decision making one because of the town's size of only 80 residents and also being part of a bigger township. So, I would definitely stay.

Your characters get one completely ordinary day (...) how do they spend it?
For Kessy, if Dad is present in the morning, it's…
• preparing breakfast
• eat
• do the dishes
• cleaning up after him
• shower
…and then see what the day brings.
If Dad isn't present in the morning it's the same but without cleaning up after him, and showering is first.

For the current WIP that's definitely Colonel Heigers, especially when you're a subordinate rank. He would blame you for what has happened, and would order you to fix it. Now!
If you're a civilian, he would start a rant on how difficult times are and nothing works anymore and what a pity it is and at war times everything was better and this would have been happening at all etc.

How do you think where you live affects your creative work?
I live in the middle of the woods, dense woods. So, the only things I'm hearing are the muffled train horn every half an hour, the occasional ambulance helicopter going over the house, and else only the murmuring of the trees in the wind and sometimes the rain.
Thus, I can dive so deep into a story that even an earthquake wouldn't be noticeable, and it affects a deep immersion for the reader, too.

I don't know why, but that weird "I have to act because someone is in need"—feeling was (and is) with me all my life. I knew I would've never been accepted as a firefighter back in the days because I'm a girl, nor to the police or EMS for the same reason. But a "technical" job wasn't any problem for girls in the GDR, so combining my soul with the job would have been perfect.
But unfortunately, the Berlin wall fell and everything we kids assumed to happen was going down the drain…

Tell a story, real or fictional, about an object on your desk/work area.
On my monitor there once sat a little plastic Gary, the snail from Spongebob. Being still a CRT there was enough room to put him. Then I switched to a LCD, and Gary could barely hang on.

Describe how it feels to be "locked in" to your work.
*stretching*
Uh, my back hurts.
Whoa! It's dark already?
What ti…?
Jeez…
*yawns*
Oh.
Hello kitty!
Yes, yes. I'll make your food.

Do you have any self-imposed rules for your creative work?
• Don't write when you don't feel like it.
• There's no limit on how much or how little you write in a session.
• Keep some water in reach, you'll need it.

After three wrong turns and a fifty-mile detour, we finally arrived around noon. At one point, I was terrified we wouldn’t make it to the next gas station; the needle was already deep in the red zone, yet Mom just kept driving along cheerfully. But now we were here; we turned into the driveway and came to a stop.

Mom only needed the GPS to get through the city and onto the highway; then she’d rip it off the dashboard and fling it out the window in a high arc. You see, every time that pleasant voice started speaking, Mom would nearly jump out of her skin. She’d never liked those gadgets—she preferred asking for directions or using a map. Of course, we never needed one in Frisco; we knew our way around there. And here, in her old hometown, Mom knew her way around too.

How colourful is your writing?
"Colorful writing" means IMHO something written down that describes what happens in a way the reader can relate to using words that aren't usually used. Not a useful sentence.
Anyway, I can't beat Douglas Adams in that since he's the one I think does this best, but I use to try the "relatable" thing.

I volunteer to bury you on that hill, and I will cover the cost for the headstone. A nice big one.

What's a work of science fiction that you love? What do you love about it?
Everything from Jules Verne. His imagination was so plentiful that it fascinated me as a child.

What have you written for another writer?
Mostly back cover texts, because the person I called my 3rd Mom - God bless her - wasn't very good at it.

If the internet permanently stopped functioning, would you still share your creative work? If so, how?
Yes.
How?
From the rooftops like a confetti parade!

Is anyone in #Germany interested in #hiring a full stack developer, frontend developer, software developer and UI/UX designer? Some very qualified girl has applied at my publisher's, and he has no idea what to do with her.
Maybe she's just right for you…

#WritersCoffeeClub August Day 17
What was your motivation for choosing past or present tense?
I write mostly in past tense since it's the natural way for me to do so.
If you tell someone a story you experienced yourself you don't say “I go to the movies and watch this picture”, you say “I was to the movies and saw that picture”.
The other way around would be very confusing.

I see.
Sorry.

Do you agree with George Orwell, who said you should never use foreign, scientific or jargon words and phrases in your work?
No, definitely not.
If I want to show that differences doesn't matter, there have to be differences in the first place. If I'd do this in perfect Oxford English, then there are no differences.
