Weird was never based on ipfs, but it has been prototyped using a close cousin, Iroh:

The instance type we’d like to host is most likely gonna be @npub1rne…g4qz #mitra
..specifically because it supports nomadic identity, so neither our instance nor our users are locked in stasis; Weird net can migrate to a different AP instance in the future if necessary, and instance tenants can migrate to any other instance that supports Nomadic Identity (FEP-ae97), e.g. with:

We would like to run an #activitypub instance as part of the #weirdone platform, same as the excellent #omglol by [@prami](https://social.lol/@prami )
This instance will be operated as a paid extension of Weird, costing $10/yr ($20/yr after beta).
All member subscriptions will go entirely to the AP instance hosters, which should be a team of at least 2-3 sysadmins & moderators tending to the instance part-time. This is expected to be a fairly low-volume instance since all members are paid (to begin with).

forking the official app is tricky because it’s such a fast-moving target that is unlikely to wanna merge such an addition down the road.

Gobo exists as a live open source example as well.
Unfortunately the middle of the venm diagram ‘atproto enthusiast/user’ and ‘ap enthusiast/user’ appears to be so small that no one has decided to pursue this yet.

Nomadic Identity is complicated and many separate ventures are saying ‘we do this’. Such statements need to be accompanied with explanations of the flows and trade offs involved, as that makes all the difference.

The whole reason why those 100k users can be switched across service providers so easily is because all of their ID keys (did:plc) are stored on the singular Bluesky-operated https://plc.directory
That key-ownership does not change with the move, so complete Bluesky-independence has not happened yet in this case. Those users are still dependent on an essential piece of Bluesky-infrastructure.

Self-interested hyperbole aside, I think that’s a laughably low number for what is now effectively an ‘AI Company’. I’m sure >95% of Google employees use Google (well, at least until recent years).
If this stuff really works as well as these companies claim it does, wouldn’t their entire workforce excitedly be using these tools already?

It makes me sad that some #fediverse and #activitypub
advocates don’t believe a pluriverse of social web protocols is possible;
that’s literally all the web has ever been. Additive, composable stacks.
It was never that *one* protocol. It’s the mixing and matching of multiple protocols - like http+html ad infinitum - that makes the World Wide Web so resilient.
Plurality is the web’s superpower; the more you fight it the more the pluralists will route around you instead of with and through you.
