Just to clarify: geogram is not competing with reticulum or other protocols. This is a platform making use of those protocols. Something that provides "apps" running on top of those communication roads underneath.
Digital packets over radio are usually transported using something called AX.25 that is from the 80s. APRS is built with AX.25 packets but this is not a network protocol like AX.25, it is a messaging protocol. Meaning, that only allows to send text messages (not-encrypted) with a limited size.

It is far older than LoRa, has tens of thousands of repeaters running today and permits things like text messaging between normal walkie talkies and people on the internet: https://aprs.fi/
So in geogram the APRS is basically our geochat, where you can read which APRS messages are being sent on a region and write a few yourself.
That is inside the Teleport app on geogram, there are other integrations there like IRC, telegram, signal, XMPP, NOSTR and Bluesky.
In terms of connections: Wi-Fi is king. Radio, Bluetooth and LoRa are OK but you quickly realize they won't be enough when you want to share pictures or other data.
Geogram delivers the goal of 5 (or more) different ways to reach you with the same callsign: email, IRC, APRS, bluetooth, Wi-Fi, USB-C, LoRa, Internet. Others are in preparation like shoes (physically have someone carry your notes on your behalf). I'm not sure that meshtastic nor meshcore support will be added soon, there are still higher priority topics.
Our main use-case scenario are people that have nothing other than their phones and network providers that stopped being reachable.

Kind of. The ESP32 does behave like your home router (permitting devices like phones and laptops to connect) and between ESP32 they create long range WiFi mesh link using a protocol called ESPnow.
This is (most often) a network without Internet access, because it either isn't desired nor is available (offgrid).

Wouldn't recommend to try geogram right now.
As mentioned earlier: the bootstrap server is gone, the next versions to be published should function without bootstrap servers so I'd say wait about a month until this approach settles or just follow the updates on this account. It does run locally OK. Install on your phone (android) and laptop (Linux preferred but Windows OK).
I know what you mean. On my city people were really disappointed that neither meshtastic, nor meshcore, nor basically anything based on LoRa was useful for more than small text messages.
That is basically the reason why I'm looking so much on ESP32 and using mesh Wi-Fi. Two devices can reach 1 kilometer in line of sight and those connecting have a large "normal" LAN to share images, files, etc. For long distances radio (APRS) goes far further than LoRa, reaching 1700 kilometers when you bounce the messages on the passing satellites.
There are limits to mesh, even on WiFi. Too many people connected and it will quickly become unusable. That is the same for LoRa, last month there was a catastrophe in Portugal and this happened on the region where meshcore was the strongest. What happened is that (again) nobody could exchange messages because everyone wanted to exchange messages. That is the drawback from everyone using the same frequency.

Design of reticulum is great. It will even negotiate links and pass info with the least amount of bytes needed which is what 99% other protocols neglect.
My only issue are libraries. At the time I've last tested to adopt them there was an incomplete implementation for ESP32 and the reference library was in python which is fairly unusable to build mobile apps. Hopefully this will change as more people support the project.
Geogram will happily use reticulum or any other method. For the moment doesn't really bring advantages. For example: we already don't use IP addressing but rather NPUBs to find devices across networks wherever other geograms are reachable.
reticulum, yggdrasil, freenet require full length cryptographic signatures but in addition to that we started adopting radio callsigns (e.g. X1ABCD) where ABCD are the first four characters after the npub signature of the user so that legal communications over normal radio can happen.
This follows what people do in the real-world. Callsigns identify people or devices (radios, ships, airplanes, cars). So the a person can use a radio to identify himself through voice and over data being able to prove that callsign belongs to the person.
There is the risk of someone trying to calculate an npub that matches your callsign and impersonate your identity. For that situation we created a kind of registrar on a first-come-first-served basis using NIP-05 from NOSTR. On that registrar, the user registers the callsign with an npub and that is valid for 1 year that can be renewed any time there is activity and is verified as still used.
When a year passes without activity, the same callsign can be reclaimed by another npub that has the matching first 4 letters. This design can be changed but it follows very closely what radio operators expect and radio transmission is our core thing since we tend to avoid the internet as much as possible.

Request: doing a "like" is still two-clicks and deciding an emoticon. For me this annoying, most of reactions are just "like" and when wanting a different emoticon I just press longer on the "like" and then comes up the other emoticons to choose from.
Can you make the UI that way or at least put an option on the settings for that?

Thanks, that seems like a new project at version 0.1.0 and that name is already used at a few other well-know projects.
Would say it only focuses on mesh whereas geogram uses whatever is there. For example, we use ESPnow to build WiFi mesh networks with 3 USD devices but other than that there isn't really much more existing that can really be called mesh (BLE or LoRa are just for small text messages).
Both suffer from the same lack of privacy in the sense that any device using an IP address is visible to others. Using TOR is even worse, because then your IP address is directly routed through government-controlled servers.
They do mention radios and satellites but nothing concrete on the docs. To legally use radio then encryption isn't permitted, and to use the freely available satellites for message exchange then that is only possible through APRS which is plain text without encryption allowed.
The bridging part of their project is cool if that manages to be implemented but I doubt any data protocol can really be more byte-efficient than reticulum.
I've been doing experiments and this should be announced within a few days but was indeed possible to run geogram on the Internet without servers. The method is using the Bit Torrent network. Basically announce a topic on the network and find the other nodes listening.
Not fully happy with this option nor the others. Reticulum is fairly unusable at the moment, i2p requires a separate install and eats away the battery. Bit torrent at the very least is very light and simple to use.
Encryption is always assured when needed. NOSTR does a great work at encryption and messages are authenticated/challengeable, plus, we are having devices talking directly to to other device so zero servers in the middle.
The problem in Internet privacy are IP addresses. Your public IP address is always known to someone.

It went above permitted monthly bandwidth quota so only next month can resume connectivity to other peers. My apologies for the inconvenience.
What this proves is that maintaining servers from hosting providers is not really a good practice for long term self-reliance. They are limited in bandwidth and end up costing quite a bit every month.
At the same time: peers shouldn't rely on the existence of stations to find each other across the Internet. I've thought (naturally) about using well-known NOSTR relays but this is just the same issue in the end: dependency to a server, somewhere.
Somehow, there must be a way for peers to connect with each other on the internet without known servers in the middle.

Yeah but no.
That is a surveillance coin where each transaction is monitored by authorities which have again and again arrested or punished people when paying the "wrong" things since they see everything. Therefore it is a fedcoin that is publicly embraced by western governments and called a "store of value" or whatever bullshit they invent.
On the other hand, the true revolution is found on the cryptocurrencies that the same governments forbid or heavily censor.

Good article. The monero avoidance goes even further back in time. Since at least 2017 or so was the most voted feature request and completely ignored.
I've wrote an app for self-hosted email that runs from the phone and/or laptops. Encryption is good, but even better is when emails don't even get hosted at someone else's servers and you carry them directly with you (with encrypted storage, of course).
In essence can even send/receive emails at long distance using radiowaves instead of internet. All of this is a lonely work, if you could evaluate what is being done with geogram at the end of this year I'd be grateful.

That is the HTML version to share with people on a browser in read-only mode directly from a phone. Does what is intended.
To create and edit spreadsheets you install geogram, runs locally on the phone or laptop if you prefer. For basic formulas or accounting and file sharing is good enough.
It isn't meant as full replacement for excel/libreoffice. This is something you use when nobody else around has internet to access google docs nor laptops running Office/Libreoffice because often a phone is one of the last things on the pocket that you can afford to carry.

geogram starts to feature a whole set of alternatives to excel, word and powerpoint. Built by default inside the platform, can be edited straight from a phone and shared with others without storing your files on servers.
These docs introduce a novel way to create documents called NDF, which stands for NOSTR Data Format.
NDF is used for much more than the whole document types you'd know. They are used for video (keep note of the likes, comments, transcriptions), they are used for meetings (e.g. a meeting room with several meetings archived inside).
Login is done with NOSTR, likes, comments and editing files is made with your normal account. Inside each NDF is a zip archive with JSON files. This means a format that any other tool can read/write. A simple file that can be shared with others easily.

That is exagerating. Even yesterday dinner was as traditional as it can get, kids are growing well and the local school isn't big enough to place everyone.
Nuclear power was quite a blow, electricity jumped 2x as expensive and plenty of people are now in poverty with all the unemployment and too-to-fail companies that are now failing.
Bad things have the advantage to wake up people. There has been too much confort and complacency that permitted two (maybe three) generations forget that the world isn't kind to slackers.

There are different levels of secure.
At level 1 is the normal stock Android you buy on the stores. Securer option are no-brand cheap chinese phones. Awful quality for sure, but they don't afford to bother themselves in locking the device too much nor incorporating deviations from the original AOSP. Google services and others track your phone 24/7 anyways. Best thing you can is custom encrypt some folders, gives some privacy.
At level 2 you've got the modified Android distros . Claude and Codex do a good work flashing these phones for your with a distro, my own choice typically falls on LineageOS. Drawback is that banking apps stop working but life without google services is a boost in privacy right there. Zapstore is most needed at this level, given that Google Play is gone for most of the scenarios. Extra points when you go with Pinephone or similar.
At level 3 you skip installing Android and go for PostMarketOS. There you can trust the software won't rat on you and can still launch most Android apps in addition to anything that runs on a normal desktop. Works great nowadays but there is a drawback: battery life tends to be less.
Going deeper outside google you need to ditch Android in favour of ESP32 to skip spyware entirely. At this point only the network can spy on you since the device is still depending on IP addresses.
Last frontier for secure is your ESP32 ditching the internet completly, using radio packets. Send and receive data from anywhere in the globe using some of the freely available satellites.

The thing is that albeit there is no central server to seize, they will go after each and every server where the note is hosted.
As long as they can identify the note, it will be easy to chase wherever it was publicly hosted.
One thing you might consider is sharing images with text inside them (stenography) that can be rehashed to other (meme) images and this way make really hard to chase/discover where those texts are hosted.

Thank you. I've found the repository at https://github.com/marmot-protocol/whitenoise and will later study how to integrate inside geogram.
For the moment the geogram private messages are really private since they are hosted directly inside the devices of users, rather than untrusted devices. But I'm quite sure we'll need this at some point.

Most people moving to south america on dire conditions won't survive for long. Life is hard down there, even for those who know the language and keep family ties.
Portugal/Spain (Iberia) wouldn't be crowded. There is plenty of space and places to walk over the border (a whole mountain range). My recommendation is to look around Asturias.
Plan B should mean you keep surviving. Vacations are helpful to meet people, build connections and get to know locations before you are in trouble. For example, last week I've drove all the way from Germany to Portugal mostly because I want to be familiar with the route. To know the directions and particularities before I really need them.

The newer versions of geogram are equipped with a "Now" feature.
Since geogram is gathering a huge number of chat and other notifications, they are now nicely gathered on a single spot that is updated in real-time with what is happening.
This means for example to track what happens on IRC, telegram, blog posts published, NOSTR messages and basically anything that is a notification.
There is the worry that too many notifications become annoying, here is possible to setup the priority level for specific chat rooms that you absolutely want to get a popup notification when things happen.
At the moment only internet-based notifications are available. A bit later will be added radio and bluetooth notifications from other devices nearby.

It always puzzle me to see such high costs. There is the monthly subscription and is necessary to plan a bit ahead or at least read what is happening to stop the bot from wasting tokens.

At NOSTR would already be a success if they switch from fedcoins to monero since those folks love binary choices.
I'm personally a fan of BEAM and SIGNA because of their technology. Other than that, truly depends on what you want to use crypto for.
On my future scenario there is a high-probability that even the internet is disconnected at my region, so anything with a blockchain is useless at that point. So we built a simple wallet based on debt, where 2 people (+ witnesses if desired)digitally sign a debt between each other and can even transfer a portion of that debt to others.
In a scenario where people lose everything: there is no crypto, no fiat nor conventional assets to rebuild the economy at a community. But one specific asset remains available to most people without posessions: time.
So we adopt time as a currency because it is easy to apply on the real world when everything else isn't available. For example: "You work on the fields for 5 hours and that is my debt that you can redeem later when the crop grows". Or specialized work that follows a ratio decided between both parties: "I'll give 1 hour as mechanic and you give me 4 hours for general work"
There is more to this story, but my recommendation is to look at payment methods outside fiat or crypto altogether. The ones that exist today are good enough, but what might happen tomorrow in the remote chance of war everywhere is where I think more people should be looking right now.

The ideal thing is that you keep one of these on top of a rooftop and then use bluetooth to get messages on the watch or phone.
At the moment the network that I see with most potential is APRS because it connects text messages from walkie-talkies, these LoRa devices and anyone who has an internet connection. So fairly good to connect people everywhere.

No caso que se viu em Leiria, geogram teria continuado ligado por rádio ou satélite sem ser starlink, porque usa APRS gratuito através de satélites como o ISS.
Opções existem. Se queremos sair da pasmaceira desses monopólios temos de ser nós próprios a fazer essas alternativas.

It isn't. That was an awful project which ignored basic requests and code contributions for several years that would have made it usable.
The moment that meshcore was released last year, almost everyone jumped away from that awful project.
For your information, LoRa only permits a few text messages per hour. It is not capable for sharing pictures, files nor voice.
Plus, when more people use LoRa on the same region than the frequency quickly gets crowded and you are not even able to send those few text messages. This has happened again last month in Portugal during the floods. Everybody with LoRa wanted to send messages and the more crowded it was, the more people insisted on sending messages.
So, it failed even on the scenario it was meant to be useful. It is a good toy, but really far below bluetooth, WiFi and radio walkie talkies.

It's going to hurt. Families completely messed up (again). All of that until you learn that LN is quite traceable with the right tools, which are easy to purchase on state-level.
Before you call me a fan boy for monero, just note that I was one of the first people mining that fedcoin back in 2009 with very similar beliefs to yours. That was the reason why we pushed it up on the first place.
Merchant adoption should never be an argument, otherwise we'd all use paypal. Economic density is debatable, since there are factually more daily real transactions happening on the monero blockchain than that fedcoin because real people do use it on the streets.
If you'd know me better, you'd see I pass quite some time researching newer technologies and supporting people that build them. Monero delivers everything that was dreamed from a crypto but isn't the only game in town. You'd find me more often being a fan for BEAM (tokens on top of a private chain) or SIGNA (not private) because the concept of mining with disk space rather GPUs is quite something special for me.
Do your own research. I couldn't care less about whichever crypto is used, but we should care when people will get persecuted because it lacks privacy.

Me personally need neither of them.
For my scenario in ten years there isn't even internet, therefore blockchains are out of the picture.
I've wrote a cryptographically signed method based on units of time and digitally verifiable debts.
Not sure if you are interested, this was a topic from the NOSTR-02 in Coimbra where in such scenario the Internet is gone but cellphones are still plenty.
So two people "without money" still have at minimum time and a few possessions. The wallet permits both phones to sign events with time (e.g. I worked ten hours for you) and to mark when they got paid (both sides get a receipt). We thought hard on the topic and time was the most intuitive and consistent measure of effort.
To cut the conversation short: for survival you need basic stuff like food, friends, protection and off-grid tech. That we build quite well on our own and won't be dependent on monero nor fedcoins.

When you to bank and ask for a pre-filled check, there is a signed transaction from both parties that you can broadcast (give) to whoever you want.
That person then follows delivers the check (token) and digitally signs the transaction as concluded.
These are basic banking procedures. I've made earlier the analogy to food stamps and food. Avoid confusing both as food.
A check is not money. A token is not fedcoin. Tokens are objects representing something else. Probably with 1:1 parity, probably signed digitally, orally or with paper. Doesn't really matter. Unless you are confusing tokens with whatever pyramid schemes on casino coins, where those are essentially pegged to nothing else other than hopes.

Right now on next versions is easier to use the chat using the command line or directly the browser. For example at https://p2p.radio/chat you can login and chat using a Nostr extension.
But still difficult to make faster/more reliable the chat on the desktop/mobile client. It is going to be a long week until this is sorted.

I'm all in favor of profiting from fedcoins as governments and millionaires pour money to make them "relevant".
The only difference is remembering that neither governments nor millionaires have your best interest in mind when it comes to money. That is when you go for real solutions that they avoid like the plague.
Guess which privacy coin keeps getting chased by western government and delisted from all major exchanges because of "reasons"?
That's the coin that provides privacy and liquidity on the real world out there.
