I only spent a couple of times at Moomba, I was usually in Ballarat over this weekend when I lived in Vic. Ballarat has a big chess tournament and a magnificent flower festival, the Begonia Festival, over the Labour Day weekend

Australian public holidays are weird. This weekend, Tasmania has an extra day off for '8 hours day', a very specific Labour Day celebration. Victoria also celebrates Labour Day this weekend commemorating the establishment of an 8 hour working day. Meanwhile, Queensland celebrates Labour Day at the start of May, like most of the rest of the World, while NSW has Labour Day in October for reasons I don't know.
This weekend Canberra celebrates Canberra Day because politicians would rather talk about themselves than the average person.
South Australia has Adelaide Cup Day this weekend, because workers like nothing better than to lose their money to bookies and other crooks, while seeing whether their horse wins or dies.
WA had Labour Day last week because they are on a completely different time zone while Northern Territory doesn't have a Labour Day because it's too bloody hot to work there.

In Gippsland, I lived in Drouin, a beautiful little town with a load of flowering Gums. They have a ficifolia festival, usually in February when the trees are blossoming.

Just found out that a young person who I used to coach chess to has a debilitating form of chronic fatigue and is bedridden, light and noise sensitive. They must only be in their early 20s, it is very sad.
A bright note in the sad story is that a friend from the chess world would visit in hospital regularly spending hours at a time in a room where the only communication was silent.
Unfortunately, the visits stopped after hospital discharge, as distance was an issue.
Be kind people, you never know what tomorrow has in store for you 🙂

While walking at Lake St Clair National Park, we saw masses of coral lichen just covering ground areas. Apparently, it thrives on ground where dead or dying buttongrass can be found.
We were disappointed to miss the buttongrass but thrilled to see so much lichen.

Lake St Clair is the deepest lake in Australia, a glacial lake situated in the World Heritage listed Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park. It's one end of the 6-day Overland Track, and there are loads of short walks. A beautiful place to relax, chill out and discover nature's joys.

I tried to coincide my trip to the Tessellated Pavement with low tide, to get the best access to the rocks. It was a very low tide, which made nearby Dunalley Bay look pretty stunning. This was going to be my silent Sunday picture, but my feed could do with some quieting at the moment.

Yesterday at the Tessellated Pavement we were lucky to spot a fossil in the rocks. The rocks in this area aren't good for finding the oldest fossils. Tasmania has some fossils dating back 800 million years (sorry if I have any creationists in my followers). This is possibly a trace fossil of a bivalve mollusc and will date to between 60 million and 160 million years.
By the way, I'm no expert, so if anyone knows better, I am happy to learn 🙂

Today I daytripped to Eaglehawk Neck to see some of Tasmania's great coastline. There are amazing cliffs, arches, blowholes etc, but the stand out is definitely the Tessellated Pavement. This is a rock formation created naturally by geological fracturing and erosion, and Tasmania's tessellated pavement is the best known in the World.

Yesterday's walk was a good one for birds. We were buzzed around by a Grey Fantail, serenaded by a Butcherbird, followed and spied on by a pair of Green Rosellas, disturbed a White Faced Heron, some Honeyeaters and a Dusky Robin. But the star was a Superb Fairy Wren who stayed still long enough to get a halfway decent photo 🙂

We put cats in boarding for a couple of days so as not to stress them (or lose them) during our move. We picked them up yesterday afternoon and after some complaints and some exploring they have both settled down.
One is on my lap after vomiting under the bed earlier. All is normal 😂

After a mad few days, we now own a unit in Launceston having sold our place in Beaconsfield. Our stuff will be delivered tomorrow so we have a night of limbo before we start the next phase of our lives.
