My Mom is dying, and my attempts to distract myself with Mastodon (when I'm not at the hospital with her) aren't working anymore. She's decided to refuse further treatment and go to hospice. I feel my heart being torn apart. I lost my Dad just a few years ago.

Here we currently have -13 with a windchill of -19 (of course this is at 10:41pm, well after sunset). The next few days look like snowfall with lows around -15 and highs around -5. I don't mind though, I like the cold weather. January and February will be the coldest. I would like more sunshine though; like you I get affected by the darkness.

It might have been nice to have those kind of roots. I've lived in something like 22 places, so average one for every year and 8 months. Jeez.
And that's not even counting all the different places my Mom has lived (grew up seeing her on the weekends).
I'm not even sure I know what "roots" are. At least they've mostly all been in the same city (3 in Toronto though).

I would imagine that any super-high-tech aliens that have managed to progress that far and not destroy themselves or their world must have developed a high degree of empathy and compassion along the way, or just somehow strongly possess it innately.

Whereas here in Canada, they and their descendants would most likely proudly identify themselves as Greek-Canadians and continue to practice their cultural traditions. The rest of us being grateful for their great Greek cuisine and other contributions.
I like Sweden a lot but this is something where I think Canada does it better - the cultural mosaic.

I think I'll delete my bluesky account. I find it too American-centric + using an American social media site leaves me feeling uneasy rn + I haven't been there that long anyway.
