Ok, so how does that look in RGB? Well, the towers are monochrome. They are striped in a very specific way, so that background artifacts in one "direction" and platforms in the other "direction". Occasionally you see blobs of the base color (elevators) so you can gauge that.

So for the life of me i cannot figure out atari 7800 artifacting

like. I can get the basics to work. I have stable artifact colors. Light+dark stripes produce saturated solid colors. Except… those colors don't match the videos at all
Here's our reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHfC0gwkW4k. The first tower (Tower of Eyes, 0:49) is dull grey + blue platforms. The second one (Realm of Robots, 3:10) is bright orange+pink/purple platforms. The fifth one (Broken Path, 6:53) is bright green + magenta platforms.
Note that the submarine sections before the towers _do_ indeed depict orange/green tower there, and the game is using 160 mode there, so that's not artifacting but an explicitly set color.
Good, now we established how it should look like.

Fuck, we just spent like 20 minutes searching for Nova and started worrying, then this floof appeared with eepy face up there of all places - either in the white box on the left (no idea what it was from, we asked for a spare box in a pickup point before moving), or inside the empty PC case, we're not sure

Finally, I got sidetracked today playing Metroid: Zero Mission on OP6, and... it's surprisingly playable? Shoulder buttons are not _great_, I mean it's a touchscreen, but it is _playable_. So far I cleared Kraid, and at least up to that point it's perfectly fine, incl. Kraid battle itself.

Still idk what’s wrong with colors. It’s not just hues - specifically blue is wrong, it appears teal and it should be gray-ish. Everything else is how it should be, but not that color.
Also the artifact colors are a lot darker than they should be. That makes sense, it’s because the luma changes are supposed to be filtered out when it interprets the dithering as chroma but aren’t - but why would the color itself be wrong, no idea
