Interesting observation today: they have been playing tick-tack-toe in the sky’s here this morning. I saw the plane making the streak shown below and had a chance to open Flight Radar app. No information available on that plane. Wanted to share this picture to show the ability of willow (Salix spp.) trees to root. I built a bed last fall by layering cardboard, horse manure, soil, wood chips. I was just preparing to plant it and found this willow branch from the neighbors tree that had 2 sprouts. Willow has an amazing ability to sprout.

These plants self seeded from my worm compost. I compost my tea in the worm compost bin after steeping, then I use the compost in a 50/50 mixture with Fox Farms potting soil to start my seedlings. I haven’t got that figured out yet. For now I put it in a bucket and break the pieces up with a stick, kind of like a mortar and pestle. That works for small batches, but it’s a real time consumer and the pieces aren’t very consistent in size. I tried putting them in a burlap bag and driving over it, but that didn’t work very well.

Just finished installing a new on-demand hot water heater. Project goals included increasing hot water capacity and adding a backup heater. They are plumbed so they can run separately or the tank heater can feed the on-demand heater to increase capacity when needed, like filling the tub. Probably more efficient to switch to the on-demand, but it seems to take longer to get water at the faucet with the on-demand. Still reliant on grid natural gas, so the next step will be to get a non-grid source. One step at a time! #grownostr

I’ve always wanted to release a million balloons at the base of tower! How many birds do you think those things kill? I’d also like to know how much water they use. The output of a dirty solar panel can drop 20-30%, I would assume it would be similar for those mirrors and they are located in an extremely dusty locations, so will need to bee cleaned very often. Not to mention the maintenance on the steam generator with all the thermal cycling, they must have cracking issues.
