Definitely needs testing to see if the apps are pre-loading the images; if they are, then it's a moot point non beginner. Regardless this will be a small sampling size but as I have talked with others about this minimum of 5% needed to get some valid data.

So...... In the chapter file, I know some folks had a shit fit over some things that were being placed in the JSON. I do not remember correctly what that was.
However, to collect some client-side data and fire a pixel during playback, I would like to have a function that allows us to hide a chapter while still having the app act on loading the image for a second
This would allow us to fire a hidden chapter image at 5, 10, 15, 20 minutes, etc, that we could use to build retention data.

So, am I safe to say that since most apps? Are no longer doing ALBY lookups by address@getalby.com, so using anything besides the LNURL at this point is worthless. We are considering removing integration with Getalby from our dashboard.

Scammer has set up shows on their platform. They all link to illegal gambling sites in Asia that steal people's money. We had one offer us $5k a month to leave there site up. So if anyone knows the folks over there they should tell them.

We have offered podcast premium for a long time with incredible savings over Patreon, and guess what, podcasters still go to Patreon.
The revenue opportunity for the host is minimal after processing fees, less than 5% for fewer than 3% of shows that have a large enough audience to support a premium podcast.

I'm not sure why we want to invent something that isn't needed. Premium podcasting has been successful for more than a decade. The extra tooling is not required.
Additionally, when 95% of listeners are on platforms that support the current simple implementation, I cannot see why a hosting company would do otherwise.

If we do it, Cloudflare would be the place. I pay a single exit fee off AWS to put the media into Cloudflare; they do the rest of the work. I pay for bandwidth, which is much easier to swallow and cheaper by many multiples than AWS.
Until it isn't, Cloudflare loves to send letters and force you into fixed contracts. We big big big numbers associated. You have to read their fine print carefully.

Servers and rack rental would be recovered very quickly..
Yet, Podcasters are gonna want this for $20 a month, including their audio hosting.

YouTube owns the DataCenter, owns the Fiber, has peering agreements, has cache servers in all major data centers, and at the edge, aka your ISP paying rent and rack space. .
So they pay for the power, and equipment, and have invested billions.
Yet we still do not know if YT is profitable.

As per your example
HLS typically uses chunks of ten seconds. Each of those are a separate request. So, a two hour show is the same amount of data vs a normal download, but 7,200 requests vs just one.
1,000,000 / 7200 = 138
1000 Plays / 138 = 7.24 x .75 = $5.43
So, in all reality, the request is where you get killed on AWS
This is where the clouflare solution is better until you move to much traffic and they force you into a contract.

Cloudfront would not be the solution I would use for HLS. It would likely be Cloudflare initially.
Then, as things scaled up, switch back to AWS or roll our own.
We did the math based on our CloudFront BW cost, which is "much" lower than your example.
No one, at least those we have talked to, considers AWS because there are more fees to consider

We have conducted a comprehensive cost analysis, and even with lower completion rates based on my data costs, it's many many multiples higher than fixed media.
Takes me back to 2008 costs. It was costing me 10 cents to deliver a single video.

They want global distribution on all platforms. Simple. With tens of thousands of paying customers, their wants and needs are far and wide.
If Apple Podcasts said we make Video a first-class citizen again with no change to the current distro, aka fixed media. MP4, then all the podcast hosts will have to support it as it is.
The HLS discussion is an attempt aka attempt to drive the narrative, as only three podcast hosts today support MP4 delivery.
So maybe you see my reluctance.

The HLS Discussion. Yes, I know that several hosts have seen the light (in terms of future survival) and are looking at HLS.
I want a definable commitment by all Podcasting 2.0 apps to support it.
If we, aka hosts, add this, it will come at a significant cost to deliver the media in HLS.
I am not spending a single dev dollar until there is a reciprocal commitment.
Video podcasting is supported today with no additional dev work.
There has to be a joint effort here.

Actually Programmatic ads run $5 to $14 CPM we never see CPM of $2. Typically CPM's go up over time as advertisers learn your show.

The benefit is simple: your audio remains pure and updateable.
As soon as you place a video on top of your audio file, a listener can no longer access the updateable audio file.
We have many shows that are updating pre-rolls on their shows to announce new guests, special episodes, etc, so pre-rolls are being used for other things than advertising.

Well, this is even more horrendous, and I will continue to tell people to create a second listing for video and keep one for audio. I have had tremendous success with this option. I would not sacrifice passthrough for what you would give up by being stupid enough to overnight an audio feed that is on passthrough.

FWIW, Blubrry will implement the ContentLink spec fully as a regular item and as an element of a live item.
We will revert AlternateEnclosure for only physically linked media files of all types currently supported.
Hack is a Hack, but we will stick to the spec that makes logical sense.

It was a hack; it has always been a hack. Now that there is a defined area under the content tag and, I guess, Live Item, I do not understand at all why it would be under Live Item because this could be uploaded content not associated with Live.

Dave, I do not watch the GitHub repo and have no idea where to look for changes beyond what you provided the other day. All that is is a bunch of links to conversations.
As I have said before, it would be great to have a change doc somewhere where laypeople, not devs, can track changes. I get your busy. But total pain to track any of this.

Regarding Blubrry, we were a media company first and a hosting company second. After four years of incredible growth, we saw the handwriting on the wall as professional agencies showed up.
We were making things up as we went and the ad model had a downward trajectory. In 2008 I pivoted to a service-based company it saved us.
90% of decisions I make in regards to blubrry is how do i add value to our customers and add revenue.

Sad day changing my splits so the majority of my sats go to my node and not Alby.
We will likely be removing Alby as an integration partner in our V4V set up as a podcast host and looking to do something different.
This is our opportunity to figure out how to do this with FIAT. Maybe we can tokenize it. Podcast listeners can buy Tokens that can follow micro V4v and the tokens can be cashed out by the podcasters.
Need to think a bit on that.
