I've had an itch for a few weeks, wanting to write something readable but quite deeply technical about the 'original sin' of the NDIS scheme design — the decision a bunch of economists made to leave pricing to the markets to sort out, which leads to the kind of scheme inflation the Labor government is now saying it is forced to make hard decisions to rein in. The same Labor government that implemented a scheme without effective price constraints in the first place? Yeah, them, that mob. Those idiots.
I wasn't sure how the fuck I was ever going to find the two weeks I'd need to write it, and I was complaining to my aca group chat about it, and they said: fuck it, just write it. So I took an hour, bashed out 1200 words, and sent it off to a policy magazine to consider. 😅

I don't cook Nagi's dishes often but I respect the meticulous way in which she spells out the steps and logic of her recipes. I think she knows her audience really well and it shows; she doesn't talk down to them but she's definitely keen to build their confidence to try something a bit new, and I really appreciate that drive and desire to push the envelope of Aussie mainstream cuisine.
ADAM LIAW THO. AHAHAHA. I've only ever cooked two of his recipes. His SBS Food recipe for chicken kara-age (Japanese fried chicken) is very straightforward and the results are phenomenal. It's deep fried though which rules it out for everyday cooking. The other is his porridge recipe where he explicitly calls for 'an amount of butter that would make your cardiologist nervous' and yup that about sums it up 😆
I have interacted with him on twitter back in the day and while he presents as quite modest and charming on TV he was a world-class see you next Tuesday in person. He claimed having worked as a health department lawyer meant he knew best (better than Harold McGee or Kenji Lopez-Alt, just noting) about safe cooking temps for chicken. Completely missed my point that chicken cooked exactly to temp and no longer is usually flavourless and chewy; unless you're poaching chicken breast, there's no reason not to cook it until cooked.

I had a breakdown on my bike in Canberra and had to put it on the bike rack to catch a bus back home. Most nerve-wracking thing I've ever done — with a whole busful of tired cranky commuters watching you just praying you don't make a hash of it! I've had mine in daily use for six years and it's only just now beginning to lose a bit of height.
It is memory foam and very gently squishy so it accommodates your head weight and neck without feeling like you're sleeping on a phone book.
It's split into three layers so you can take one out if you're petite.
It's a cervical pillow so it's curved with one side about an inch higher than the other.
Experience of use: I use mine with a hybrid spring-and-memory-foam mattress. The mattress supports my hips while the pillow squishes enough to let my head and neck relax. This combination has more or less ended the pattern of crippling tension headaches I used to wake up with 1-2 mornings per week. So I am proselytising the pillow.

Spoke too soon. The Holter monitor is a heckin' SNITCH. Had some rhythm disturbances last night and I prob have to stay in for another night of zero sleep. I argued the dodgy rhythms are probably due to my bipolar meds and noted there was nothing unusual on the electrode picking up the left ventricle, where the procedure took place. Cardiologist had a look on her face like 'when did you learn to read an ECG you fucking lawyer?' She did agree that two nights of bad sleep will be suboptimal from a 'not winding up hypomanic' perspective.

Hey so... for the Caity Canberra Visit, if you're in the CBD around dinner time, may I recommend a resto to consider? It's called Terra and they do barbecue. I don't even like barbecue personally but this place is incredible. None of the blokey grilled/smoked meat nonsense. The roast chicken is where it's at: lightly charred, some herbs, some spices, juicy as hell. It's a bit upmarket in a non-fussy mod Oz way but if you stick to the basics it's still an affordable dinner.
I can also strongly recommend the Ethiopian place in the CBD (it moves around a bit, my last visit it was at New Acton). Healthy, delicious, generous servings and super affordable.

I discovered Coles now stocks Yumi's dill pickle flavoured dip and I LOVE dill pickles so of course I bought it.
And eating it is *exactly* like dipping into a 250ml tub of Macca's Big Mac special sauce with crackers.
The first mouthful is 'wow okay intense,' the second is 'this might be too much' and the third is 'get this away from me.'
Now eating plain crackers to try and dilute the aftertaste.

It's EMDR which feels hella weird and kooky but it does seem to work to ground me in my bodily experience even as I'm thinking about painful recollections. Gone from feeling off the charts overwhelmed to a 1-2 on distress and I have a doable list of tasks for the house.

Okay, lying down worked okay as long as I didn't do anything that involved tilting my pelvis, such as... getting up again.
But I am up and seated for the workday and I have this burning pain across the top of my hip where the QL muscle (pictured) inserts onto the bone. It's only about 3-4 out of 10 pain but it has a really insistent quality.
Given the forces involved I would not be surprised if it has torn a bit. I've done this muscle before, albeit the opposite end of it, and it took foreeeever to heal up. 😖

Just did my tax returns for this year and last. Our former finance officer was a [redacted] [redacted] [redacted] and he never once managed to calculate my correct tax rate. At least my tax debt from these two returns only came to $900 rather than the $4K I owed on the previous one. 😵‍💫

However I'd just done my back towelling off after a shower so I wasn't really playing along.
I was leaning right down and twisting from the lower back to towel off my left ankle and I heard this godalmightly crunch as a vertebra popped down near my coccyx. They are normally locked together under a ton of pressure from the weight of my upper body.
As that lumbar spine joint popped my back muscles transferred the load of all that weight onto other muscles, i.e. my hip flexors, and they got a godalmighty yank and are now complaining mightily about it. I can stand up okay but not sit, and I'm going to try lying down now.

The bus driver hit on me and I'm still chucking about it.
First he negged my outfit as I was getting on, then he made light conversation, finally he asked if I had time for coffee as I was getting off.
I don't get hit on much these days, let alone in public spaces, and I found the whole thing charming. It could have been icky and gross but the driver kept it light hearted.
