True quality. My mother also had a Pfaff for about 60 years of heavy use, and any machine she's sown on since comes with a lament about how it's not like her Pfaff. 😊 😔 So true.

The answer is a bit of a 'thought octopus', but even in primary school, I had concern for the many ways and places freedom was obstructed in the world. Books, friends, interest in my distant heritage and an amazing German teacher all influenced my interest in culture and history, but it was a music teacher in high school in the 70's who had taken singing groups to West Germany/West Berlin ( some cousins included) whose occasional vivid, perspective-filled interludes during choir rehearsals stood out most in my mind as I read this. From an 8 to 50+ years tied together in a way. And here I am, still thinking about freedom in the world, but now on Nostr, grateful for translation app, enjoying your beautiful posts. Thank you, and 😊 Pfaff.

I haven't the words for the poignant beauty and meaningfulness of this to an old California girl who grew up with such far away place(s) very much in heart and mind, and even today as close as the power button on the sewing machine I bought in the early 1980's 'Made by Pfaff in West Germany'.

Dead Wood
Through the window I see a hummingbird, its back to the morning sun, its snake of a tongue zipping in and out catching insects.
Many times I’ve chided myself for not attending to these little dead branches, though today, I’m glad I haven’t.
These have become important vantage points for numerous feathered friends at work and play.
So called dead wood, indeed playing its integral part in the rich dimensions of our lives.

Sadly true. Many things from 30+ years ago are still intact and functional, from the oil used on my sewing machine to the common paper or plastic bag, while their replacements are falling apart. I kind-of do, but really don't see how this helps the environment.

Mine!
While reading ‘ “Human Rights” as Property Rights’ in Rothbard’s The Ethics of Liberty, I suddenly recall the moments I’ve witnessed young children definitively declaring, “Mine!!”
The recollection brings a feeling of of joy, which puzzles me at first.
This milestone marks the emerging awareness and learning about: what’s mine and what’s yours, managing things being taken unjustly, voluntary sharing, responsibility and love.
It’s a level-up moment rife with obstacles and nuances, sometimes met with negative impact, but hopefully guided with patience, compassion, wisdom and fortitude.
Hearing a toddler’s passionate,”Mine!”, there’s often a voice in my head saying, “Yes! I hear you, You! Your own I am, I can, I will!”
Whether we’re 18 months old or 81+ years old, our sovereign journey continues.
It’s reason to celebrate when we recognize the only true Source of our rights and self ownership and begin to operate in that Light.
That informed, responsible “Mine!” isn’t selfish, it’s a divine gift.

Initial setup is easier now ( I recently returned), but still requires a level of curiosity, learning and conviction to get started.
Word of mouth is extra important since there's no "tease" like with typical apps which provide a small bit of information and where to go to access (free or self-hosted for fee) full content.

Makes sense to me. Materialism (philosophical) fosters a more self oriented productivity and meaning decision making template, where as numerous spiritual / cultural traditions tend to encourage the value and meaning of individuals in play with how their decisions impact their relationships and overall contribution to the continuum of life we are part of. Children certainly create an opportunity to experience this more vividly.

While out walking, I heard the distinct sound a load of lumber makes as it’s dropped onto the pavement. I crossed the street to breathe in it’s essence with reverence, interest and gratitude. The man receiving the delivery understood, and there’s a gift in that too.
My gratitude is for childhood memories of my father’s shop, sawdust on the floor, overall pockets filled with nails and things that got splinters out of my fingers and dirt out of my eyes.
The years passed, and still it was a welcomed place to just be; projects happening, uncles swapping stories, cars getting fixed and so on.
There much I could say in appreciation for the presence and example of loving, helping men in my family and among friends. But these more subtle moments hold the feelings I return to when I take a detour to the lumber department at Home Depot, walk a more slowly when I pass by the tire center at Costco and welcome the sound of an old engine idling down the street.
These bring me back to the possibilities attached to to that place, time and most importantly, to the sense of calm, care and belonging in those moments.
Today I celebrate the men who bring their love and light into this world.
