Before I stumbled on Neoplatonism, I ventured into the wishy-washy world of the Gnostics. That's sounds like what your neighbour spoke about, and I suspect most people outside of organised religion and atheism adopt, yet it lacks specificity and falls into the same trap of ritualistic practices in the physical world, why through the emanatianism lens, it is profane. I believe most people have never heard of what the Neoplatonists taught, but then they also believed that most people were too ignorant to simply connect with God, at least in the latter scholars like Iamblichus who wrote about theurgy, which is philosophia and self-proximity, not the mental masturbation that we see in colleges today.
Meditation is a ritual just like prayer is a ritual, and they have no place in Neoplatonism. Thinking deeply is also a mistake. There is only thinking clearly.
It isn't philosophy in the modern sense of the word as you are using it, it is the love of wisdom in the original Greek. The problem with Ancient Greek is that is that it was a far, far richer language than anything else that's ever existed, and much of it has no direct translation. Our languages have gotten dumber over the centuries, less descriptive and such.
There sure is circular reasoning in Christianity.
The Bible is true because it's the word of God. It's the word of God because the Bible says so. The church is authoritative because it was founded by Christ. Christ is authoritative because the church says so.
There are no external reference points. You can't point to something and explain how or why it is with this framework, other than appeal to some mystical unseen power or reading the good book. It lacks the specificity I sought. It is structured on self- assertion. It is why so many people reject it upon deeper examination, because it lacks a logical framework. But Atheism is similarly misguided, reaching for the exact opposite.
The idea that the Bible hasn't been altered, mistranslated and twisted is laughable. I've just spent paragraphs explaining it. There are many books that explain this very clearly. The fact that Ancient Greek was so rich means that, in lesser languages, interpretation was necessary. I specifically pointed to people who are experts in ancient greek that will explain this. They study the ancient texts because that is the source material for the biblical interpretations, and no one in the field disputes that. The translations and interpretations are what is disputed.
Anyway, I'm not trying to preach because while the concepts can be explained, it is not something that you can force someone to recognize, it has to come from within and it is a personal realization. I enjoyed this!

With all due respect, it doesn't seem like you have examined the other schools of thought in order to determine that there is only one path. Anecdotally, I was raised Catholic, turned atheist and then with continued examination rejected that too.
It's disingenuous to dismiss the centuries of the most rigorous philosophical tradition in written human history and reduce it to 'some dude'. It wasn't just Porphyry, it was all those before and after him too - Pythagoras, Plato, Aristotle, Plotinus, Iamblichus, Proclus. Christian theology is built on their work in philosophy, except it removes the logical, personal aspects in its doctrine. This is where atheists tend to attack Christians, on that basis.
Augustine studied their work and converted it into (Western) Christianity while spending his days attacking the Neoplatonists, which is ironic considering their philosophy (philosophia, the love of wisdom) was the basis. A school of thought so 'full of shit' that they felt the need to destroyed most of what they - specifically Porphyry - wrote. The fact that it also long predates the Christians suggest to me that it deserves at least some attention to inquisitive minds.
Those who study theology look at what the Church said about Plotinus rather than what Plotinus himself said. Wes Huff doesn't know ancient greek, and that is precisely where his ignorance shines. Look to Ammon Hillman and Ken Wheeler - actual Greek scholars who understand the source texts in their original forms because they know the studied the language for decades, for clearer and more astute understandings of what was being said at the time.
This is what Porphyry meant when he said it's easier to write words on water than to argue with a Christian. Not saying this is an argument we're having, and definitely not that Christians are stupid in any way, but that the framework of Christianity uses circular logic as a defence mechanism when these uncomfortable truths are presented.
Plotinus, the real pioneer here, who Porphyry was a student of, was grounded in direct contemplative experience that anyone can verify independently. There is a lot that is shared between these groups (Neoplatonists and Christians), it's just that Christianity and other religions were shaped for political reasons, removing crucial foundations that suited their goals at the time, and it has been re-shaped since then in later iterations of the Bible. This is specifically what I refer to what I say that Christianity is misled.

Constantine had all religious books collected in order to centralize their teachings for his own purposes, and ordered everything else be either excluded or destroyed. So at inception, he and the council picked and chose what would form the new doctrine. This still happens between the different flavours of Christianity today. Including declaring certain interpretation as heresy. We only have some of the older works because Christian writers would quote Porphyry in their attempts to refute him.
Atheism doesn't come into the picture. It came even later, and is a very material world view, one that I believe has led to the corruption in life science and physics today.
The original texts were written in Ancient Greek. The translations and interpretations where intentionally misrepresented or disavowed in order to establish the Christian doctrine. At the time, I would say the motivations were more political than they were theological.
Porphyry's "Against the Christians" was first condemned and later destroyed. He wrote many works that documented the contradictions of the crucifixion and misattributed prophecies, and reframing Jesus as God. He didn't deny Jesus's virtue or that His soul was blessed. He denied the theological leap from "wise and pious man" to "co-eternal with the Father."
"The evangelists were inventors and not historians of the events concerning Jesus."
Christianity absorbed Neoplatonism directly. Augustine was converted through reading Porphyry and Plotinus. The Trinity maps directly onto the Neoplatonic triad (One, Nous, Soul). The apophatic tradition in Christianity comes directly from Plotinus.
You don't need a book or a spiritual leader to know God. Only to think and see clearly and rationally, and understand that the path to God is a personal one.

The divine existed before the Bible and Christianity. It is not contingent on the authority of a book that was compiled by committees centuries after the events they described - with the most inconvenient teachings declared heretical in later revisions.
This is the 'intellectual poverty' Porphyry identified in his work - which the Christians burned by the way.
In Porphyry's Letter to Marcella, his wife, he wrote:
"We do not worship Him only by doing or thinking this or that, neither can tears or supplications turn God from His purpose, nor yet is He honoured by sacrifices nor glorified by plentiful offerings; but it is the godlike mind that remains stably fixed in its place that is united to God. For like must needs approach like."
From other preserved fragments of his work:
"God, indeed, being the Father of all, is in need of nothing; but for us it is good to adore him by means of justice, charity, and other virtues, and thus to make life itself a prayer to Him, by inquiring into and imitating His nature. For inquiry purifies and imitation deifies us, by moving us nearer to Him."
