Spam is such a big problem on the internet that most of us webmasters have had to shut down forums and close comments on our blogs.
It's why I've been so excited for lightning used as a spam filter, even though I haven't seen an implementation yet outside of stacker news.
Spam is wasting hundreds of manhours with moderators and resources.
If I choose to filter ordinals and other spam transactions from my mining template, I have every right to do it. You can just go to another miner and send your transaction, they'll be happy to accept the sats.
Permissionless does not mean anarchy. You have every right to spam the protocol, I have every right to filter it because you're wasting my time and resources.
I won't run the ord disrespector only because the guys promoting it are deranged spooks and because it's untested code.
But if the next bitcoin core version filters out a huge chunk of spam, I'll run it.

I believe at some point even unspendable utxos will be able to be offered as collateral.
It's the same with gold.
Let's say you have a small golden nugget. Getting it verified might cost half of its price. But if you show it to someone, thus proving that you own it, they might consider the risk acceptable and lend you the money.
Bitcoin can be verified with a simple wallet signature and even if it can't move on-chain due to high fees, it's still there.
I think microlending services will happily take them. Perhaps even with accepting the seed words themselves in case of liquidation.
That doesn't mean that you shouldn't consolidate your utxos when the fees are low. I'm just saying it will become so valuable that people will find a way to use even the smallest bit.

I asked btcpayserver about an easy way to run it, basically you either run it on your own node, which is troublesome. And there's the option of running it on a hosted server, like voltage cloud or lunanode. They recommended lunanode.

Blue wallet has a very neat feature.
When you give someone an address so they can pay you, you can just copy the address itself, go to new wallet, give it a name, import, paste the address.
That will create a watch-only "wallet" on which you can see all the transactions and check to see if the people paid you at a glance.
And all that makes it so much easier to check if the payments came through and despair.

Controversial opinion:
Prepare to lose your bitcoin.
I believe that almost everybody will eventually lose their entire stack.
Hodlers will get rekt. FIRE and early retirement, travel the world guys will get rekt. Some bug in a popular wallet, some seed generation algorithm will be reverse engineered like milk sad, or any other random way that will compromise your seed words and make you lose your sats.
Prepare for that.
Have alternative storing options, preferably on metal plate with no multisig nonsense or anything else. Just drop 1 million sats on a wallet that you've generated with randomness and leave them there.
Have cashflow to recover. Ideally from online businesses.
Have a network of bitcoiners that will be willing to help you get hired again, to trade with you, to support you.
I think we'll only start seeing more and more of this as price goes up and incentives to trick people are increasing.
The point is to put yourself in a position to get some of it back immediately, not to hoard sats.

Running a node is the only way to have a vote in the bitcoin system. For example, my node will never run drivechains, even if they manage to do get through.
The right to vote in the bitcoin protocol is analogous to being a citizen in Ancient Athens. Not all were citizens, and (unfairly) all were male, contributing members of the Athenian society. There were slaves and people born elsewhere that didn't have citizen rights. And anyone going against the city-state was ostracized, but that's not possible in bitcoin.
The analogy still stands, because the Athenian citizen had to stay informed on current events, matters of the state and had to vote on various issues. That's why democracy worked, not because everyone voted, but because the voters were mainly valuable citizens.
Back to bitcoin, it seems we're creating the same sort of governance. Informed noderunners get a vote, people who leave the thinking to others do not get one.
It's a sort of democracy of 17.000 noderunners and it's messy but it works so far. And it's the only way to sustain one.

I was just teaching this yesterday to my students. Your wallet is not tied to the software or the device. You can just load bluewallet on your phone, import the seeds and gain access to your funds. Just know that they're now exposed to a hot wallet so it's best to send the coins to another cold storage wallet.
While I don't recommend ledger, the issue this guy had can happen to any device and it will keep happening as years go by.

Don't try and memorize your seed words.
Put your keys in some sort of physical barrier even from yourself. Some sort of physical lock and key, a vault, anything that can put a real delay.
The onslaught of psychological attacks that we're about to witness in the next decades will be insane.
Imagine targeted psyops aided by AI and chatgpt. Entire social media accounts, entire websites created just to make you part from your coins.
You think it won't happen?
We can even do this right now. It's just not worth the time and effort. The cost is too much. But when bitcoin will be worth over 1 million dollars and cost per attack will be wittled down to pennies with AI, you will see it everywhere.
They will use psychological manipulation in ways you've never imagined. Your ex-girlfriend's photos can be used to generate AI catfishes that subconsciously remind you of her, even her voice can be sampled.
Your mentors, the same. Every like you've ever made, every comment, every video you've watched can be parsed into new specialized, deepfaked gurus and you'll be amazed at how each word they utter will speak to your soul.
You think it won't happen? You're just not worth it.

Should you invest in that altcoin?
I'm a bitcoin maxi, but let's forget about that for a moment.
From a computer science point of view, let's say you invest in an altcoin because of its speed, anonymity, programmability or whatever.
Fine.
Ask yourself this:
Are people running nodes for that blockchain? Are they running miners, if applicable, or validators? Do you personally know people running one? Can you yourself run one without a serious investment of time and capital?
Because I can.
I'm running a bitcoin node and a miner. If everything crashes, I will single handedly maintain the entire bitcoin protocol.
Can your altcoin survive a total system crash or are you just dependent on someone else?

Nostr is the bitcoin superapp. I have 12 lightning wallets. I don't really need another one.
The existing ones need to add a bunch of functionality into them.

Breez used to be the lightning wallet I would suggest to people because it has app integration built in, and it solves the problem of "what the heck do I do with the bitcoins you just sent to me?"

He's Making a List, he's Checking it Twice
You’re Santa Claus. Gift bitcoin at every opportunity. Weddings, birthdays, namedays, anniversaries.
People in Greece and Russia like to commemorate a big event like an engagement or a wedding with something gold. Turn this custom into an opportunity for orange-pilling. Gift them bitcoin, it’s digital gold after all.
Keep it simple. Just load up a wallet with some sats, write the seed words down on a piece of paper with simple instructions on how to recover the funds and give it to them in a nice envelope along with your best wishes.
When people ask about bitcoin, demonstrate how easy it is to transact with lightning. Get them to download a simple wallet like Wallet of Satoshi, tell them to tap “Receive,” scan their QR code and send them 1000 sats. The number looks impressive but it’s a negligible amount, at least at the time of writing this in 2023.
The whole thing looks like a magic trick from their perspective. Downloading an app, hitting a button, scanning a QR code and instantly receiving sats looks like magic.
Purists and cypherpunks cry out about this, that we’re orange-pilling people the wrong way, we’re not teaching them about self-custody, that Wallet of Satoshi is custodial and that’s not real bitcoin and so on.
Who cares?
Nobody has time to educate everyone.
We’re talking about a 2-minute interaction here. If you’re sitting down with an interested party who’s into learning how to bitcoin the right way, by all means.
Go with a non-custodial hybrid solution like Phoenix Wallet, Breez or Zeus, show them how to write down their seed words, explain how important they are, demonstrate how to recover their wallet.
But it’s in a case-by-case situation. Sometimes you’re in a taxi, talking to the driver. Sometimes you’re talking to a waitress in Prague at the end of her shift and you tell her, “I want to tip you with bitcoin, would you like that?”
And every bitcoiner at the table chips in.
That last bit happened for real after a round of beers with Evan Kaloudis during BTCPrague. It helps having other friends to keep it going, like the passionate KenobiNakamoto taking the opportunity to explain to the waitress where she could spend the satoshis we all tipped her.
My point is, that since you’ve taken up the role of orange-piller, that you’re now the Orange Santa Claus. Set aside a few thousand sats on a user-friendly lightning wallet and when the opportunity arises, gift them to people. If you can’t afford to gift out sats to everyone, show your work on social media like twitter (X) or nostr, tell other bitcoiners that you’ve been talking to this person and that person, post a photo, either with their face or concealed, ask for permission, and get people to zap them some sats over the internet. If you have a good enough following and the timing is right that might be even more effective than just sending it yourself. The recipient might get zaps from around the world. Joe Nakamoto does this quite well.
No matter how you do it, keep it simple, fast and easy. Remember, after bitcoin itself, our time is scarce and limited. You want to tease people to look into bitcoin but you can’t do that work for them. It might trigger a search, they might forget it for years and then come back later as hardcore maxis, they might go into shitcoins, they might ignore it and forget about it the next day.
Keep your time and sats invested into this to a minimum because you’re going to be doing this for a long time.

Self-custody your own bitcoin keys but make sure you add in a real-world hassle to accessing them. Like splitting multisig in two different houses. Op vault codes where there's a time delay might help as well, allowing you to sleep on it.
I know I am prone to impulsive decisions, I can imagine a scenario where I can be psyoped to do some transaction in haste.
Honestly that's the only thing that scares me with self-custody.

It's the other way around, and if you're not seeing it you're delusional. Monero's use case is supposed to be anonymity, and yet bitcoin, a completely open blockchain that is traceable by anyone is still being used in half the black market transactions where there are real-world concequences to being tracked. That proves bitcoin's anonymity tools do work and that the rest of the transactions are just being carried on because of the monero delusion.

I know, those are the badges I was referring to. From what I understand, instead of going to a site and issuing one, taproot assets will be transferrable over lightning. Meaning I can actually "send" you a badge. Plus all the programming options that opens up, for example OG nostrica badge owners might get a discount on buying the next ticket.

We got paid for marketing work, 2 separate payments. First in bitcoin onchain, the second through a bank. First one went through, got the sats, sent them to someone else already.

Most bitcoiners have their own, much different definition of what it means to orange pill a person. I’ve seen mentions of getting a taxi driver to download a lightning wallet and sending the payment in sats to them. Is that truly orange-pilling? Hmm… no. It is a great first step, but what makes you believe that that person won’t go on to shitcoins after learning about the ease of using cryptocurrency?
So, let’s define what that is in the terms of this guide.
To orange pill someone means to get them to take the first step into learning about bitcoin, money, self-custody, being sovereign, and to teach them to start questioning the world of lies we’ve been fed our entire lives.
Too poetic? Okay, here’s a more specific one:
To orange pill someone means showing them how to send and receive a bitcoin transaction, explain to them the importance of keeping their seed words safe, and showing them more articles, books and guides so they can go further down the rabbit hole.
I think that’s better, don’t you?
No matter what your definition of orange-pilling is, let’s discuss a few things first.
Orange-pilling comes from the scene in the Matrix where Morpheus offers the blue and the red pill to Neo.
“This your last chance. After this there is no turning back. You take the blue pill, the story ends. You wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes. Remember, all I’m offering is the truth. Nothing more.” ~Morpheus.
The fact that the terms comes from the Matrix is absolutely perfect, because the Matrix is based on Plato’s Allegory of the Cave. Everybody knows the Matrix so let’s talk about the Cave. Inside the cave, people are chained up, in the dark. The only thing they can do is talk to each other and stare forward, where there’s a dim light on the cave’s wall. Someone is moving around objects, throwing shadows on the wall. The people can never see the three-dimensional object, they can only see a shadow, a projection of it, so their world is limited by that knowledge.
Someday a group of people manage to break out of the Cave. They go out into the light, their eyes hurt, the world is massive, they get a panic attack by the lack of a rock ceiling on top of them. It’s vast, it’s too much to bear. And they run back into the cave and tell everyone what they saw, that it’s too bright, too open, too much everything. Objects are real, there’s light everywhere and colours. So many colours, not just the flame, the rock and the shadow.
And they don’t believe them. Maybe they even get angry at them and attack them. Who are these fools to claim that the world is not what they think it is? Who are they to suggest that we’ve all been lied to all our lives?
And that’s the first thing you need to keep in mind when trying to orange pill someone.
Why do some people find it so hard to believe in bitcoin?
The answer is simple. It’s because understanding bitcoin requires acknowledging you’ve been tricked your entire life.
The culture shock is real, I’ve been through it. The stages are as follows:
What is money?
You start to learn what money really is, and how fundamentally flawed the Keynesian system has become. You see that the only way forward is by a hard money standard, whether that’s gold or bitcoin. Then you realise that in a world of information, the only logical step is bitcoin.
Then why bitcoin?
You start to read about it’s properties. It’s antifragile, decentralised. Why is that important? Nobody can control it, great. Why is it like gold that can be attached to an email?
Then there’s the anger and disbelief. We’ve been fooled.
Why doesn’t everybody see this? You read everything about bitcoin, you listen to podcasts, talk on bitcoin twitter and nostr with other plebs. Nobody seems to have all the answers but they make far more sense than the lies of the mainstream media. You talk to your friends and family, you come off as crazy at best.
As I said, you have to acknowledge the trauma the other person is going through. It’s a culture shock, and not many want to go through with it. Think of Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, people who got out into the world went back and told everyone that there’s more to life than the shadows on the wall. Or, the same allegory being told by the Matrix, with Cypher wanting to go back, to forget.
We call that Bitcoin Derangement Syndrome, BDS. It’s hilarious but it’s so real. Many early bitcoiners, people who have spend years of their lives either advocating for it or working on it, some making or losing fortunes in the process, go back to the fiat world, shift gears completely, rant and rave against bitcoin and dive back in the Matrix, the Cave, taking the blue pill. They want to be fiat rich, they lie and delude themselves that everything is okay in the world and if they get just enough money they’d be okay.
But they won’t. This is real, and no matter how many lies they tell themselves things will not change unless we change them ourselves. Babies are dying, that’s true. In wars, in artificially induced poverty, in carrying on with the Keynesian ways of thinking of endless imperial expansion and exploitation.
I’ll be honest, bitcoin rewires your brain.
Do you really wanna force that on people?

True story. My family imported the Elna Press in Cyprus. It's a high quality product that once demonstrated properly had a 100% success rate in making a sale. It was and still is quite expensive, making it a major purchase for a household, not as much as a small car but enough to consider it carefully, more like renovating your kitchen. In Cyprus the banks offer financing so that makes it easier.
As for the quality, it's Swiss made, built to last. The relatively few repairs we had to make were done by us for free because we offered years in extended support, so we didn't earn money on that.
Our competition was Singer which is a household name, and still we dominated the Cypriot households selling basically one per home in the entire country. Back then Cyprus was close to a mere 600.000 in population.
It was a hard money standard business in a fiat world.
We couldn't expand to new markets, our importing license was just for Cyprus. We couldn't charge more for repairs, everything was under warranty. We couldn't sell more, the market was saturated.
The product did need repairs every now and then, which I also helped repair as a child. I had learnt how the electronics worked by heart, even identifying common issues. But in general the Elna Press was a beast, it might work for years without any issues whatsoever.
But we didn't charge for them, so in a fiat world, this became unsustainable.
There was no planned obsolescence build in to need spare parts after a year or to upgrade to a new model.
A hard money business in a fiat world simply cannot compete.

They went from a useless Twitter app alternative that tried to integrate zaps to a great nostr client that everyone recommends for newbies and one that helps with mass adoption.
Good job.
Your next step is to give every user a random lightning address upon sign-up. You'll have to either run it yourselves or partner up with a NIP-enabled lightning wallet. Eliminate the steps needed for a casual user.

Yes, nostr is fucking annoying. It has a steep learning curve, things don't always work right, you have to wait for stuff to load.
It's so annoying.
But you know what's really annoying?
Losing your audience that you've worked on for YEARS because some corporation decided to block your account.
Google digital sharecropping. Own your audience. Start building your personal brand on nostr, even if it's just a backup solution (it won't be).
I know that as a creator, being told to expand to yet another social network is annoying. I know full well what that means. But it's not yet another social network. It's your escape hatch for when things inevitably go wrong.
Amazon has started cracking down on explicit content again. At the same time Song of Ice and Fire has fucking incest in it but it's on the best seller list, so they're hypocrites.
Your little bookshelf is gonna be buried or banned and there's nothing you can do about it. Not your keys, not your audience. Nostr lets you retain some of that control.

People who are against custodial lightning wallets sound like this, "you shouldn't use that email service, you need to run your own email server."
Most users won't run their own email server. I'm a computer guy and I don't wanna run my own, even though I do run a lightning node.
The only time email achieved the necessary network effect was when Hotmail started giving out free email for everyone. It had a signature back to Hotmail in every message and it went viral. That's how lightning is gonna get the mass adoption it needs.
