There are now 142 MiCA-licensed entities in Europe.
(As reported yesterday, still zero from Italy!)
Today, I took a deep dive into the data to see who they actually are. Sadly, only 8 are Bitcoin-only providers (kudos to the Netherlands for leading there). While most are standard crypto exchanges, the real surprise is the lineup of traditional banks and financial institutions securing licenses, especially in Germany. Clearly, the fiat finance sector is taking "better safe than sorry" to heart.

That would be nice, but the incentive to use Bitcoin for daily purchases is really hindered by the hefty 33% capital gains tax. In Poland, it's 'only' 19%.

I discovered Bitcoin in its early days, back in 2011. I was lucky. I was simply searching the internet for a way to receive donations anonymously for Clipperz.is, an online password manager I created with a friend, a small project with a truly paranoid threat model.
Happy users wanted to send us money, but we did not want to know their names, their email addresses, or, even worse, the details of their PayPal or bank accounts. Bitcoin was the right solution to our very specific problem.
To me, Bitcoin was a tool, not a religion or a get-rich-quick scheme. It was a tool that nicely complemented our little project and served the interests of its small user base of geeks. It took me time and effort to understand the much larger potential of Bitcoin, and this was only possible because of the people I met along this journey of discovery. A remarkably eclectic crowd: techies and laypeople, young and seasoned, spanning the entire political spectrum, all united by a shared fascination with Bitcoin.
This tiny community of Italian Bitcoiners was full of enthusiasm, and it fueled my passion for the technology. Quite naturally, Bitcoin became the cornerstone of my professional life.
For several years, I was completely absorbed in startup life and didn't spend much time attending Bitcoin events or following the Bitcoin Twitter bubble. Bitcoin itself was more than enough to keep me busy, enthusiastic, and intellectually stimulated.
Now that my life is no longer so hectic, I am able to spend more time here on Nostr or attending Bitcoin events, big and small. And I’ve realized that things have changed dramatically. What is most disconcerting to me is this: where has the openness to diversity and the richness of ideas from the early days gone?
I’m encountering almost exclusively Bitcoiners who rigidly conform to a standard set of beliefs, individuals who identify with some combination of the following totems: no taxes, no vaccines, pro-guns, anti-immigration, global warming is a hoax, the EU is a dictatorship, long live Mises, long live Milei, long live Bukele, HODL, bull run, to the moon, God, family, gym, steak and eggs…
Never a dissenting voice. Yet back in the distant year of 2011, it was clear to us that Bitcoin was for everyone. Even today, I keep hearing that, but at the same time, a narrative, sometimes delivered in a harsh tone, has emerged that pushes away a large portion of potential users who don’t necessarily identify with this bundle of convictions.
Understanding and embracing Bitcoin requires significant effort and genuine intellectual curiosity. Let’s not make the journey of discovering and understanding Bitcoin harder than it already is.
Bitcoin is for everyone. Even today.

An open letter from 70 European renowned economists asks for an acceleration in the launch of the digital Euro.
While these academics correctly identifies the risks of Europe’s current dependence on foreign payment monopolies, its proposed solution (the Digital Euro) suffers from a profound ignorance of an existing, superior alternative: Bitcoin.
The signatories frame the Digital Euro as the "only defense" for European sovereignty, yet they overlook a battle-tested technology that already achieves their stated goals without the inherent risks of a centralized state currency.
They claim that a European CBDC is the "only" way to ensure resilience. However, Bitcoin has operated 24/7 since 2009 with 99.9% uptime, providing a globally available, robust payment infrastructure that is "immediately available" today, unlike the Digital Euro which remains a project with mired in political negotiations with undefined technological foundations.
The economists all belong to SFL (Sustainable Finance Lab), an independent academic think tank stemming out of Utrecht University’s School of Economics. “The mission of the Sustainable Finance Lab is to contribute to a financial sector that serves people and planet.”
And yet, in 2025, they still ignore Bitcoin.

Nature just published a paper about a study conducted on the Milan metro. Researchers observed the behavior of passengers when confronted with an everyday social need.
- Baseline Condition: When a woman who appeared to be pregnant entered a train car under normal circumstances, 37.6% of the seated passengers offered her a seat.
- Experimental Condition: When an individual dressed as Batman entered the same train car at the same time, the percentage of passengers who offered their seat to the pregnant woman significantly increased to 67.2%.
Researchers attributed this stark difference to the effect of unexpected stimuli. The sudden appearance of an unusual figure (Batman) served as a strong distraction or alerting event.
When confronted with something highly unexpected, people are forced to break their routine and become more alert to their immediate surroundings. This heightened state of awareness causes them to notice the needs of others, such as the pregnant woman, more readily than they would in their normal, inattentive state. (e.g. staring into mobile phones)
We definitely need more fake Batmans to make the world a kinder place.

I just finished reading the "comprehensive compilation of controversial actions and statements by Luke Dashjr" assembled by @npub17u5…t4tp, and I have to say ... wow!
Beyond the nothingburgerness of the entire OP_RETURN debate, I am genuinely concerned that a significant number of people are following him in this crusade and are not troubled by his authoritarian tendencies. These include statements like: "disobeying the State is a sin," "law is a subset of morality," "laws are just by default," "adultery is a crime that deserves capital punishment," "Rosa Parks' actions were not justifiable," and more.
These extreme "values" obviously have an impact on what Luke believes Bitcoin should be used for and who should be allowed to use it. To him, even blacklisting addresses is a viable option.
Perhaps the best option for Luke and his followers is to fork Bitcoin and launch a new coin with rules and a protocol that align with their morality and traditional values.
As for me, I remain deeply committed to Bitcoin as a tool for freedom, financial inclusion, and justice. A tool that can reduce the disparities and distortions of the current financial system. But critically, it must remain a tool for everyone, criminals included.

I read that #Bitchat comes with a "Nostr fallback" that uses recipient's Nostr public key to route messages via Nostr relay network.
If the Bluetooth mesh connection is unavailable (e.g., the recipient is too far away or offline from the mesh), the app sould automatically route the message using the Nostr protocol over the internet (via Tor, if enabled).
I understand this "dual-transport" architecture is part of the Bitchat design and enabled by default. Therefore, a Bitchat app intelligently switches between the two "transport" layers depending on the connection.
However, I can't find a way to associate my Nostr identity to my Bitchat user.
Am I missing something obvious here? Thanks!

I’m not a developer, and I’ve always been terrible at sysadmin-type tasks. That’s why I always resisted switching to a Linux laptop as my daily driver.
A year ago, I finally decided to make an Ubuntu machine my main workhorse. I was proud of myself but also incredibly uncomfortable—always nervous about messing things up, unable to handle simple tasks like properly setting up my disks, and constantly confused by the different ways to install apps (snap, flatpak, …). Well, that’s all over now, thanks to the Warp AI-powered terminal!
It’s like having one of my smartest dev friends sitting next to me, but without the embarrassment of constantly having to ask for help.
Today, Warp helped me set up a RAID 1 disk to mirror my main storage. Then, I asked it to run a check for keyloggers, and I ended up with a cron job that runs weekly to scan for all kinds of threats (rootkits, viruses, open ports, etc.). As a bonus, it even sends me a nice report with the test results via email.
I can't recommend it enough!

Mi piace notare come, nelle ultime puntate, lo spirito anarchico e antisistema del Bitcoin Italia Podcast si riveli sempre più marcatamente. Dopo essere stato parte della prima e variegata comunità di bitcoiner italiani (2011-2015), mi sono trasferito in Germania per diversi anni. Al mio rientro ho cercato gradualmente di scoprire come si fosse evoluto l’ecosistema bitcoin nazionale.
Ho così timidamente partecipato a qualche bitcoin meetup/spritz/beer, mi sono iscritto ai canali Telegram più importanti (Telegram!? Nel 2025!? #@%*$!), seguito podcaster e youtuber vari, ecc.
E ora mi chiedo dove sia finita l’apertura al diverso e la ricchezza di idee degli inizi.
Sto infatti incontrando quasi esclusivamente bitcoiner assolutamente conformi allo standard, ovvero bitcoiner che si identificano in qualche aggregato dei seguenti totem: no tax, no vax, pro gun, no immigrati, riscaldamento globale = truffa, UE = dittatura, W Mises, W Milei, W Bukele, W Trump, hodl, bull run, to the moon, dio, famiglia, palestra, bistecca e uova, …
Mai una voce fuori dal coro. Eppure nel lontanissimo 2011, ci era chiaro che bitcoin fosse per tutti. Anche oggi lo si dice, ma al contempo si è creata una narrazione, a volte dai toni forti, che tiene lontana una buona fetta di potenziali utilizzatori che non necessariamente si riconoscono in questo aggregato di convinzioni.
Capire ed abbracciare Bitcoin richiede un notevole sforzo ed una genuina curiosità intellettuale. Non rendiamo questo percorso di scoperta e comprensione di Bitcoin più difficile di quello che già è.
Bitcoin è per tutti. Anche oggi.

Domain name registrars are still the most relevant and critical centralized component of the Internet.
I'm surprised that we have not been able to transition to a more decentralized, distributed, or federated system.
Despite various attempts, nothing has been able to gain significant traction. (I still remember the excitement of using Namecoin to set up a .bit domain that no one visited ...)
Perhaps this is an area where Nostr could play a role?

You might ask what is wrong with Dribbble. Well, they recently updated their ToS.
“Designers are no longer permitted to display or share their contact information (like email addresses, phone numbers, social media handles) prior to client payment on Dribbble.”
Dribbble wants to handle payments, and it is just fine. But some designers might prefer a self-hosted, self-sovereign alternative and Nostr might indeed be of help here.

I’ve always been told that Bitcoin and subscriptions does not play well together, but apparently Alby managed to solve the conundrum and now I might be able to schedule regular weekly payments to my daughters’ wallets. How cool is that?
I’m wondering if there are elements of centralization in this solution.
I’d love to hear a more detailed explanation of the inner workings.

RSS is one of those humble protocols that glues the web. It was born out of the same values (openness, data portability, ...) that are the foundation of Nostr.
You may not be aware, but you can already export most of the content you create and publish today into an RSS feed.
- Most blog platforms allow users to make their content available as an RSS feed.
- Most bookmark services allow users to create an RSS feed from their bookmarks.
- Plenty of third-party services enable the creation of RSS feeds for your Twitter, Instagram, Facebook accounts (think RSS.app, IFTTT, ...).
- Most podcast platforms generate an RSS feed for your show.
- ...
On the other hand, Nostr is poised to become the new web infrastructure. It will dismantle the walled gardens we've been living in for too long and is already shaping an ecosystem of decentralized apps that will gradually replace centralized ones, one by one.
Connecting RSS and Nostr is obviously a necessary step to accelerate the transition toward this new web powered by Nostr. This Geyser Project (link below) aims to build the necessary momentum to create a tool that enables everyone to make the most of RSS in a Nostr world.
Applications are countless: just imagine turning the RSS feed of bookmarks about a specific topic into a nice stream of Nostr notes pushed to a specific npub profile, and then transformin those Nostr notes into a beautiful website built with @nprofile…zdyk .

I'm fully aware there are already a few tools out there attempting this, but all of them are quite limited in features or designed to only serve tech users.
What we need is a web app that allows users to:
- Submit the RSS feed they want to connect with Nostr

- Specify the Nostr profile they would like to publish the events to
Furthermore, using a liberal open-source license, we may enable the development of competing/specialized web apps.

I use a bookmark service that generates an RSS feed of the bookmarked items.
The RSS feed is fairly rich (title, link, description, categories, image).
I would like to convert each item in the RSS feed into a Nostr note and publish it to a specific Nostr profile. The description element should become the text of the note, images should be included in the note, categories should become hashtags, and the link should be added at the bottom of the post.
Is there any service (paid options are fine) capable of polling the RSS feed and producing new notes when new items are detected in the feed?

Ho iniziato solo di recente a seguire il Bitcoin Italia Podcast. Mi sembrava il modo migliore per riprendere il contatto con la community italiana dei bitcoiner, un giro che avevo smesso di frequentare nel 2015 a seguito del mio trasferimento in Germania.
Il mio scetticismo iniziale si è presto trasformato in ammirazione per questi due soggetti che, fossero romagnoli, si autodefinirebbero orgogliosamente “due patacca”. Dietro il tono leggero si vede chiaramente il lavoro, la preparazione culturale, e soprattutto la passione.

Bitcoin-backed loans are being discussed increasingly in the media (see Cointelegraph link below). The failures of Celsius and BlockFi have taught current market players valuable lessons about risk management. However, a question still remains: why are interest rates still so high (8%-12%) when Bitcoin is the ultimate collateral?
In my opinion, interest rates will decrease rapidly. This shift will likely begin in the US, where banks are no longer bound by the SAB 121 accounting rule. As a result, they will be able to offer financial services that involve custody of crypto assets, such as using bitcoin as collateral for loans. This development will attract significant amounts of risk-averse liquidity, and rates will inevitably decrease substantially.
The EU and the rest of the world will follow this same path at different speeds, leading to the same results. I’m glad that my company, Firefish.io, is educating the EU markets to this upcoming opportunity.

Well, Sazmining should consider clearly stating the criteria and assumptions used to derive the advertised $58K/BTC purchase price. This will enable prospective clients to make a more informed decision.
Additionally, Sazmining might publish aggregate data about users/rigs and their contributions to Luxor's hashrate, allowing everyone to verify that they are receiving a fair share of mined sats.
Finally, Sazmining might release quarterly financial reports to reassure customers that their trust is reflected in the company's profit and loss statement (P&L) and balance sheet.

I guess Sazmining will take care of shipping the rig to the buyer or they could even buy it themselves and resell it to their customers, but there is no detailed information.
I think that the longer time to reach BE is mostly due to the increased global hashrate. We certainly can't blame the price. 😉
Transparency is key when you run a business based on trust.
And Sazmining could do much better in that department.

MY SAZMINING EXPERIENCE:
A CAUTIONARY TALE OF MINING EXPECTATIONS
About one year ago, I decided to try mining. After assessing the various options, from solo mining to cloud mining, I selected @nprofile…qfdf since I liked the interest alignment between the company and its customers.
If you're not familiar with Sazmining (https://www.sazmining.com), it's a company that offers hosted mining services. Here's how it works:
1. You purchase a mining rig from Sazmining, which gets shipped and deployed at one of their farms (located in Paraguay or Norway).
2. You pay a monthly hosting fee that covers energy and basic maintenance costs.
3. The hashrate of your rig is directed to the Luxor mining pool.
4. You earn sats, with Sazmining taking a 15% fee on your earnings.
In this scheme, Sazmining has all the incentives to keep your rig running constantly and efficiently.
Sazmining claims that mining with them will allow you to acquire Bitcoin at a much lower price than the market price. As of today, they claim on their homepage that you can get 1 BTC for $58K, which would be almost a 50% discount.
However, my personal experience tells a different story. I'd like to share my numbers with you. I purchased a Bitmain S21 for $5K and had it shipped to the Paraguay farm where the energy costs (0.047$/KWh) are covered by the hosting subscription ($120/month). Note that your monthly fee may vary slightly due to factors like local energy curtailments or overconsumption by your rig.
When I purchased my mining rig from Sazmining, they estimated that I could reach break-even within 15 months (by May 2025). At that time, their website featured a useful simulator that allowed me to experiment with different scenarios and estimate my potential returns. Unfortunately, this simulator is no longer available.
However, I've had to revise that forecast significantly. Today, my optimistic estimate suggests that it will take around 27 months (until July 2026) for me to reach break-even. Notably, this change isn't of course due to any decrease in Bitcoin's price.
So far, I’ve earned 3.4M sats, but the pace of payouts to my wallet is getting slower: from 340K every 3 weeks at the start, to 340K every 6 weeks now. Quite likely this is due to the significant increase in the global hashrate.
Combining both upfront hardware expenses ($5K) along accumulated hosting fees ($1300), I’ve paid a 110K USD/BTC price for my 3.4M sats!
After one year I’m still pretty far from enjoying the advertised discount and, of course, if I had opted for DCA purchases, I would have enjoyed much better results.
Hopefully, my return on investment will improve in the coming months, but there are no certainties, since global hashpower keeps growing.
I have the feeling that any other strategy (e.g. DCA) would have performed much better over the past year.

Interestingly, none of the crypto accounting services mentioned in my previous post has an official profile on Nostr. I’d really love to hear about the measures they have in place to defend the trove of customer data stored on their servers.
Even more interesting is the fact that none of these services moved the app logic to the browser and, by using client-side encryption, designed its service in a way that minimizes the amount of user data exposed to the server.
If anyone from Koinly, CryptoPanda, BlockPit, CoinLedger, TaxBit, CryptoTax, or other similar services is reading this and willing to share their perspective, I would be interested in hearing from you. Thank you!

In 2020, ~270k bitcoiners around the world freaked out because of the data breach suffered by Ledger. The leaked information consisted “only” of email addresses, names, phone numbers, and home addresses. This data was later used for targeted phishing campaigns, and, allegedly, a few physical attacks as well.
Fast forward to today: bitcoiners are totally cool connecting their wallets and exchange accounts to crypto accounting services (e.g.: Koinly, CoinLedger, TaxBit, Coinpanda, ...) that download and store transactions and balances on their servers alongside personal data. These services could definitely leak a richer data set than Ledger.
An attractive target for attackers interested in chasing crypto riches. Essentially a honeypot waiting to be exploited.
Moreover, these accounting services are often run by small startups with a questionable security mindset, and undisclosed security policies and protocols. This raises concerns about their ability to protect user data.
What do you think? Am I missing something here?
(If you believe that "tax is theft", then this question may not be relevant to you, as it's unlikely you would use accounting solutions designed to help with tax compliance.)

Today is a good day to relaunch what #Ross posted on Medium almost 4 years ago: a proposal for a new decentralized architecture for social media, a proposal that will appear quite familiar to all Nostr users. A truly remarkable document that could potentially serve as a roadmap for Nostr development.
Some of Ross's design goals have already been achieved by Nostr. Others still require further work. Some may not be well-received by the community or may be technically challenging to implement within the protocol.
I am skeptical about the role of advertisers being as central as Ross envisions. In his vision, advertisers are considered an essential pillar, alongside users, content servers, and interface providers.
Nonetheless, it’s something I recommend reading to everyone.

5. Finally, you withdraw fiat from Coinbase to your bank account.

1. Your BTC is locked as collateral in an on-chain escrow.
2. Fiat currency is directly transferred to your bank account.

I’ve recently noticed an overlap among two communities: bitcoiners and members of the FIRE movement (Financial Independence Retire Early). While most prominent FIRE advocates are against Bitcoin, some FIRE members have been stacking sats and enjoying the acceleration in their saving plans.
For those, the central question became “how many bitcoin should I own to retire?” Several calculators exist to answer this question, all assuming you will generate retirement income by selling your BTC stack over time. However, I’d like to offer a different perspective: you might never sell your bitcoins, and still be able to retire and leave most of your stack to your heirs. How is that even possible? Simple answer: rolling bitcoin-backed loans.
I've created a simulator that demonstrates how the total amount of BTC held as collateral for the loans decreases over time. The simulator currently models 5 years, but its timeframe can be easily extended.
