I'm covid-quarantining in my daughter's bedroom, because it's at the back of the house and far away from my husband. The window is open onto all the neighbors' backyards. The weather is absolutely gorgeous and someone has a radio outside playing old 90s radio hits. Honestly, aside from the covid part, this pretty much rocks.

I knew all of this, but I got a little lazy around the edges, so really, it's my own fault. For the past several weeks, I have often been the ONLY masked person in the grocery store/ in a meeting/ etc, and I still got Covid. So this variant is SUPER EASY to get. Don't leave any cracks in your defenses, like I did.

Pretty sure it was one of those "glancing encounters" that finally got me. Remember, exhaled Covid particles can hang in the air for AN HOUR after an infected person has left the room. That means someone with Covid coughs in an elevator, and when you get in 15 minutes later, you're still breathing in Covid.

So for the past month, I've been back to masking indoors nearly all the time, *but not 100% of the time*. I masked in fittings with performers, and in crowded rooms, but if I was in a room with just one or two co-workers, I'd leave it off. If I was entering a building, I might leave it off in the elevator on the way in and not mask up until I was entering the work space.

Even my industry has scaled back since Covid was declared "over". No more testing, masks optional (although plenty of people still wear them backstage). I also got slack during spring/ summer of this year, until I noticed an uptick in cases at work. Theatre people seem to be canaries in the coal mine for new variants. I knew there was a new one weeks before it was being reported in the media.

So here's the deal with transmissibility. My industry (Broadway) has operated under *heavy* Covid protocols since we finally came back to work in July 2021. We masked in the theatre 100% of the time unless you were a performer, and even then, the mask came off right before walking on stage and went back on as soon as you came off. We tested constantly. It varied from company to company, from daily spit test rapid PCRs to 3x weekly rapid antigens. Culturally, we are VERY CAREFUL.

Had an unexpected day off. Husband is working and The Girl is off at college so I took myself to the Met. Spent a luxurious hour immersed in Dutch masterpieces, listening to really great audio commentary on the pieces. Now I’m having a rosé up on the roof enjoying some truly perfect weather. God I do love this city. Sometimes I can’t believe I’m lucky enough to live here.

@npub1nvx…8ejh If you can afford a Bernina, it's always my first choice in home machines. Even a basic one is a warhorse. Avoid Singers. Long past their reputation. They suck now. Viking is also good. And it's a less-known name, but I bought a Janome in the 90s that has yet to fail me.

It was hot when I grew up there in the 70s and 80s, but it's so much worse now. Plus, soon you won't be able to insure property there. That's been an issue since the early 00s, but it's approaching crisis levels.

I'm watching stuff in #hungarian on Netflix, with English subtitles, to expose myself to more of the language. I started out with The Witcher, but there are too many made-up words in that when you already don't know the language well. Lol. Switched to Enola Holmes. It's "old-timey" so the language is more formal. Right now I catch words, but not sentences, if that makes sense.

I had my online Hungarian class today. One of my classmates is in a mask (at home) because she got notification of 6 (SIX) Covid exposures at work yesterday. We don’t have cable so I’m watching the 11pm news on ABC and they are going ballistic over this. Reading lines from the indictment out loud on the news, breaking down why it’s not “free speech” or “hardball politics”. Making a very clear case that it was widespread criminal activity. Very little both-sides-ing happening, at least where im watching.

Re: that last boost. If you get Covid, get yourself a scrip for Paxlovid. Both my husband and daughter got on paxlovid within 24 hrs of testing positive and they were both symptom free within a day. Neither had a rebound infection.

I can't believe it's been 20 years since the blackout of 2003. I was on the subway. Stuck down there for over an hour before they walked us out through the tunnel and up a ladder through one of those metal plates in the sidewalk. Walked home from 57th and 7th to Grand St and the FDR, then up 18 flights to our apartment. We were in the dark for almost 50 hours. And of all the places to hatch this dumb plan, Coffee County. It went 70% for Trump, without any vote tampering. Like, let's just play along with the story they were planning to put forth, that Dems were tampering with the vote to throw the election to Biden. WHY WOULD DEMS PICK COFFEE COUNTY?? We'd pick a goddamned swing district where switching a few hundred votes might conceivably make a difference.

More anecdotal evidence about the current Covid surge: got to Atlanta on Tues and daughter felt ill. Tried to get a rapid test at the local Walgreens and they were totally sold out. Pharmacist said “Everybody is right now.” (Ended up getting her tested at Student Health Services and thankfully it wasn’t Covid.)

Lovely night seeing Hamlet at Shakespeare in the Park. Ato Blankson-Wood as Hamlet and Daniel Pearce as Polonius were fantastic but the real standout was Solea Pfeiffer as Ophelia. She was brilliant. And we got the full SitP experience with a raccoon nesting in the top of the set, making an appearance in Act 3.

Every 4th, as you can imagine, the blacktop is ground zero for fireworks in the neighborhood. They’re illegal here, but that doesn’t stop anybody and the cops never do a thing about it. Even if you call it in they just don’t show up. Most years I try to be a good sport because who wants to be a narc.

You guys, the most amazing thing has happened. Okay first you need to understand that I live across the street from a city park. And not just a park, city block expanse of park spaces. A playground, a basketball court, handball courts, and a vast blacktop that can and does house softball games. It’s big and wide open.
