This other picture posted elsewhere in the thread shows what it looks like at an exposure closer to human vision. If you zoom in you will see city lights too. But I think the areas that are visible (Spain and Portugal near Africa, and Brazil on the other side) are not the most illuminated cities on Earth...

@nprofile…44dh @nprofile…ffyr Yeah, but had you not planned that kind of assessment, would it have volunteered the need for one? That's what I mean, for a "tool" that people with little to no coding experience think they can use to build stuff that "works", they wouldn't even know they need something like that.
Once it has the information that you're auditing the security aspects, pattern matching on that will lead it to lots of relevant information. That makes sense.

I've been asked to give comments to someone using an LLM to build a simple scheduling tool (website where they can schedule appointments). The basic functionality works fine, but they haven't thought about access control, permissions, backups, reliability, ... And how many other things I haven't thought of myself? They can't know what they don't know, you know??? And the LLM won't volunteer anything, it doesn't know anything (obviously).

You mention, correct me if I'm wrong, that a few times you spotted security flaws, and in some of those (but not all) the LLM could fix them once they were pointed out. How would that have gone without your skills?

@nprofile…c3sc For the longest time I would not buy a mouse with a scroll wheel, because I used all three buttons when playing Quake! (yes there were mice with a 3rd physical button instead of a wheel! I'm sure you remember that :) )
I used this one that I really liked a lot. Wider than most which also fit my hand nicely.
I guess the advent of the web where we spend (or used to spend) all our time reading pages that we need to scroll vertically made it more useful to have a scroll wheel at some point.

I disagree with the last part, but if that's what you have learned, you do you.
For me, if something from the past brings you joy, and doesn't prevent you from learning new things, why would it be bad?
Speaking for myself, my entire professional life is learning new techniques and pushing the state of the art. I keep nostalgia for my hobby time, it helps me stay grounded and remember where we came from. Also helps me make peace with the current trend of enshittification in tech.

I totally agree we should have ways to give more emphasis to Canadian content, and promote funding Canadian cultural endeavors in some way. I don't know how that would work in today's social/cultural/technological landscape, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try to find a way.
And I sincerely think we can push up Canadian content without pushing down other content. It's not either/or, things happening elsewhere are still important!

Hah! Your mention of "8-bit compatible" stirred up a memory for me!
Our first PC at home was an XT. When we went to a computer shop that sold components and clones later to see if we could get a color monitor, they installed a Trident 8900C (I think I still have it). I always wondered how it worked with the 16-bit part of the ISA connector hanging unconnected outside the slot. I guess that's why!

I'm getting notifications of mentions this morning. They're all posts without my username in them, and from users with usernames that are a long string of letters and numbers on the mostr.pub server. They seem like spam, but what makes me wonder is a) why are these mentions at all without my username in them, and b) these seem to be accounts created multiple years ago and that have other posts, not the typical spam accounts. So what's happening? It's pretty weird...

@nprofile…h0jy Not sure. To be clear, the constant seeking I'm talking about that worries me is really constant, not intermittent every few seconds. Imagine the sound a hard drive makes when you're starting your system, it's like that all the time. It may still be seeking every few seconds when I stop the seeding, I just don't notice anymore because the difference is so stark.

Hello @nprofile…5jk8 peeps! I was wondering if anyone had tips to improve the following:
My NAS (TrueNAS Scale) permanently seeds some torrents, for example all the Exo projects like ExoDOS and some Amiga-related ones. Sizes range from a few GiB to hundreds of GiB.
I noticed that this makes my NAS hard drives constantly read, I can hear them seeking (I guess it fetches random parts of the torrent data so the ZFS cache in RAM is basically useless). I'm worried the drives will fail sooner. Ideas?

@nprofile…zead Agreed, I am still using FF because it's still the least bad and most maintained browser but this will be what makes me jump ship eventually. Lots of people are less tolerant than me and already have. If at least they had one master switch to disable all that, but no, it's like 7 settings at this point and they tend to reset when it updates...

It was 6TB and I took out the drive later to use in an enclosure as an offline backup of my current NAS. But it's the device that started me on looking into NAS stuff since it was convenient to not have to keep a whole PC turned on just to share storage in the house.

@nprofile…vs9y Murdoch is great, lots of nods to Canadian and international history, great characters (I love George Crabtree in particular). But you have to suspend your disbelief because he has a knack for inventing things that will be invented much later to help in his investigations. It's a theme and done with humor, and they wear the anachronisms on their sleeve, but sometimes it can be a bit much.

@nprofile…ecyr I hate these dark patterns so much. I bought a Google phone specifically because I was sure I could disable all these things I didn't want. Now they're redefining what disabled means, and making you disable something else if you don't agree with this new definition.
I could degoogle my phone, but what about all the less technical people around me, they also do not agree to these invasions of their privacy but do not have the technical knowledge to know how to deal with them. I hate it.

@nprofile…lqda I'm kind of stuck with it now. Had I known, I could have used ext4 but now I have the data on it and it's too large to put the data elsewhere (except my NAS), format it and put the data back... Anyways it's a one time pain point.
What I am doing is I boot another Linux live distro on the NAS, import the ZFS pool, mount the USB drive and copy the data over. It would have just been nice if it were something that was supported.

@nprofile…lqda So far I like it, but I've been a bit put off that one thing I was counting on (being able to transfer all my files from an external USB drive) has been hard to do. I had to copy everything to external drives because I wanted to use the same drives as in my QNAP, and it would wipe them, but I can't access the drive in TrueNAS because I can't install NTFS support. Their philosophy (at least from a lot of replies on the forums) is "this is an appliance OS, not a general Linux distro".

I installed a PCIe x4 card with USB 3.2 gen 2 and USB C, which was really nice because in addition to the ports in the back, I plugged the front ports into it too.
For the software I am going with TrueNAS Scale, we'll see how it goes. Initial impression: it's a pain to copy my old data over, but once that's done, the interface is really nice and everything runs silky smooth so it should be smooth sailing from there.

NAS update:
Finally built my own to replace the old QNAP which was too limiting for what I wanted to do with it (which is: replace a lot of external services for me and my family).
I got a nice ITX motherboard with CPU, 6 SATA ports, PCIe x4 and 2x2.5gbe (paid for the N100 version, but got upgraded to the N150 for free, nice bonus!). With a 500GB m.2 SSD and 16GB DDR5 RAM, it runs really well. I used a Jonsbo N2 case, I like the form factor. Specs in 3rd pic alt text.

Since the first days I've used an Android phone, I've been using PowerAmp. Bought it once, I think it was 5$ and been getting updates ever since. I love it.
And I've always edited tags and filenames on my PC, because I like to keep a "master copy" of my music files on my NAS. And these days I use Syncthing to transfer my music over, so it's easy to keep only the latest.

@npub12ze…hunm Firefox supports addons like ublock origin even on mobile... Sometimes a video link opens in the Youtube app but I've been able to get by using Firefox in most cases. I wish I could uninstall Chrome on my phone honestly, I find their new policies pretty bad.
