https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2026/09/googlebook-laptops-launch-october-4-starting-at-899-preorders-for-five-models-live-today Well, Googlebooks are just around the corner. They look like interesting targets for mainline linux since they have better hardware than the majority of Chromebooks. I would've liked to get one to work on mainline support, but I can't afford to spend 900+ USD on a new laptop when I already own far too many.

wait what? why would krane need to be reverse engineered? basically all of its hw is supported in mainline.

the citadel/titan chip is pretty smol and the flash is embedded in the same package as the ram/cpu/peripherals/etc. i have had these chips forget stuff before (on a chromebook, not a pixel. but the difference between the chromebook version and the pixel version of this chip is quite small). not trying to spread fear, just saying don't expect this chip to be invincible.

don't use superglue because you aren't getting that back off. you can usually find adhesive cut in the specific shape of the frame, but that may be kind of expensive. i think what most do is use some kind of liquid adhesive and clean up the excess after the screen goes on.

how bad is removing the battery compared to the screen?

Introducing systemd-diskd: A new tool to manage your disks. It can create a systemd partition table and format your partitions using the systemd file system. It can also automatically bootstrap a systemd os install using systemd-repart and make the install bootable with systemd-boot. Upon booting this new os, you are greeted by systemd-greetd, a new login manager using systemd-userdb to show a list of users. After logging in to your user, you are met with the systemd desktop environment where you have access to the full suite of systemd graphical applications.

who knows if this new android os will even have a guest mode

2026-05-23 15:39:10 UTC

Google has now renamed developer mode to bootloader unlocking on chromebooks. Additionally, there is now an oem unlock toggle, just like android phones. You must now boot the OS and enable oem unlock to unlock the bootloader/enable developer mode.

I'd love to carry around a tiny pocket sized laptop instead of a phone. I wonder if any good ones exist though.

I think the point of aster's post is that pmOS currently doesn't implement this stuff by default, so if you don't know what you're doing then you shouldn't rely on it.

Yeah it does expect the DE to play nicely with it. Although I'm curious how crouton works. It is able to start xorg on vt1 (where chrome is) and there is a keyboard shortcut to switch back and forth between chrome and xorg.

2024-08-24 21:07:09 UTC

The wayland issues seem to be more related to the lack of kernel VTs, since without frecon running I have the same issues.

2024-08-24 20:59:16 UTC

- reply

Launching Xorg after frecon will cause Xorg to steal control over the drm device which means frecon is unable to switch VTs. I wasn't able to get anything Wayland to start at all (though that could be me doing something wrong).

2024-08-24 19:42:37 UTC

I tried this for a little while on pmOS and found that work will absolutely have to be done to get drm clients to play nicely with frecon.
