You are free to dislike Graf for personal reasons or behaviors, but to suggest he alone shoulder the cost of the largest and most active instance on fedi because he has money seems like nothing more than envy. I hope he can make the site advertiser supported and even profitable for himself in the future. In the meantime, I see no qualms with him asking for a couple bucks from those who can give.

No, that's called creating a service and asking people who like it to chip in. It's sort of like how libraries first came about. He shouldn't have to pay his own money to float all of the costs, and him asking people to donate isn't grifting. A pyramid scheme has a rather specific definition, and nothing about crowdfunding a service that said crowd uses meets that definition.

I think owning the equipment is a part of his costs. Small stuff is much cheaper to run than big stuff, since economy of scale doesn't work the same way from cloud computing and such. I used to have a site hosted for like $50 a year, and the bandwidth required was small but "unlimited". Once you get bigger, that cost doesn't scale linearly.

Sounds like facilitation of the project to me. You have to pay for things today (operational costs of bandwidth, server, etc.) and things forward (growth means new hardware will be required and sometimes new services). Graf has publicly stated he has made money independently through various projects in the past, and how he spends that is his personal business. I don't feel like he ought to have to spend his own money to keep things going on such an active site, and it appears that he runs a fairly lean operation compared to several others. Gab for example has a claimed operation cost per month greater than what poast has for a year, and that's including federation related use costs that aren't present in a closed network.
