If you are interested in genre romance as a whole, beyond your usual reading, I wholeheartedly recommend Lucynka's blog, where she reviews and analyzes early Twentieth Century genre romance (often published in pulp magazines, even in installments).
And today, she's just released the first complete version of one such stories: Honor, by Edwina Levin McDonald (originally 1922)

Every small/indie press implosion I've witnessed in the last twenty years (far too fucking many) has stemmed from publishers using royalties as operating capital, then defaulting on royalties and defrauding the authors.
Definitely not behavior to encourage.
