For Caturday I give you the new additions to the household. The darker grey floof is Lulu, the slightly lighter floof is Peanut. They arrived on Thursday and they have already forced me to relocate my—apparently very dangerous—plants. Also everything is a mountain to be climbed. Chaos has arrived!

Having watched the Brexit-negotiations, I think we can safely translate "you're cherry picking" into "you're not getting this".
However, it is also true that the EU would have preferred a much more extensive agreement to what they got, so there's a lot on offer to a trustworthy partner.
That being said, I'm not sure when and to what extent the UK is considered a trustworthy partner.

Interesting thing. I always teach that my students should focus on their handprint: The things they can change rather than fret too much about their individual guilt. One obvious thing to change is how we talk about individual vs systemic responsibility as a precursor to talking about structural change.

Ok, so Thursday I'll be teaching Terry Pratchett's "Guards Guards" to my fairly high-brow literary students. My task will be to show them that it is a wonderful piece of literature.
Personally, I adore it, but it may take a bit of work to get my students around.

Mastodon has the great advantage of having far fewer trolls than is usual on other sites. I am a prolific blocker and I spend far less time blocking hate. That alone makes it worth the effort.

Hard agree. Many find that Mastodon requires a steep learning curve and coming over from the Dead Bird Site some years ago it took me a long time to find my way on Mastodon - not because of the tech involved but because tech and discursive practices go hand in hand. And discursive practices are hard hard hard to change.

Har i dag for første gang præsenteret fra Libre Offices Impress-program. De involverede slides var oprindelig lavet i PowerPoint.
Der var siger og skriver én detalje, som irriterede mig.
Derudover var det fejlfrit. Umiddelbar reaktion: Jeg har ingen problemer med at lave efterfølgende slide shows i Impress. Der kan godt vise sig andre problemer hen ad vejen, men ingen som helt konkurrerer med, at mit præsentationsprogram skaber europæisk afhængighed af USA.

The article does seem to suggest a causal link albeit of a different nature (I may be off I haven't had time to read it through). The way Semmelweis’ theories were received amounted to harassment which contributed to driving him to mental illness.
Not fully convinced, but it does seem more likely.

Oh, bother: The internet makes us shout at people at the wrong time.
Of course I want you to read my link. It's a genuine question. Two facts are not in dispute.
1) The scientific community rejected Semmelweiss' theory wrongfully.
2) Semmelweiss was admitted to a mental institution and died there probably after a severe beating.
I am asking about the causal link between the two (causal links being the center of any story), because I don't see it from the wikipedia page.

I cannot think of a group that scares me LESS than my trans and non-binary students.
In fact, I'm not even sure I see a group. I just see some young people figuring out their lives and working for their future while growing smarter.
I'm a teacher. That really doesn't scare me. I'll share whichever public space - or bathroom - with them they prefer. And I'll more than happily teach them what little I know.

I can imagine. I have seen things like that too. Students who are literally on the verge of failure not for lack of talent or work but for lack of proper supervision. My years heading a PhD school taught me things about PhD supervsion I had rather not known.

The student who had been watching placidly from his chair at the whole escapade didn't even get up. He just leaned towards his microphone and said.
"That's not the book I have written," and then leaned back as if he had replied in full. Which, of course, he had.
The one line expressed what everyone in the room thought and there really was nothing else to say, because the examiner hadn't asked him anything relevant - only talked over him. 4/

The moment came during the final examination.
The examiner, a felt that the study was too limited. He presented how the study should have begun with a presentation of the relevant issues in the Danish Reformation. Then he moved into how the issues moved during the 17th and 18th centurles. Stated that then Grundtvig and Kierkegaard should have been a major stopping point, of course, and continued with how the topics finally presented in the 20th century. 2/

This recalls the best line, I've ever heard during a PhD defense.
The dissertation is question was a deeply original rendering of the relationship between N.F.S. Grundtvig and Søren Kierkegaard. A true meeting (or, as the case was: non-meeting) of giants. And the author an absolute master of his field. It's likely to be the best PhD I've ever read.
(He is also a close friend, so forgive the obvious bias.) 1/
