Ah-ha! Well the btc/ln node itself is run on minimal hardware sitting on a local network I have access to.
But the invoice generation is handled by LnBits on a VPS (5250 miles away) connecting via a VPN tunnel to the node.
This seems like a fairly secure architecture. I actually started out with zerotier as the VPN and then went to a vanilla wire guard setup. But honestly, I think even zero tier should be pretty good, since traffic is encrypted.

I've been following your recent grump posts on nostr with interest.
And I think I'm getting your general drift pretty well, but I'm not sure if I completely understand the key to your point that you're making.
I see Nostr has a very interesting toy for people who live on the technological edge.
It's kind of like ham radio, which has never been a serious communication channel in the sort of day-to-day use. And yet to this day, Ham ends up saving lives in situations where it is needed, kind of like what happened in the mountains of the Appalachians after the hurricane. I think it is the lowest common denominator aspect of the communication method that makes it continue to be relevant even though 99% of the time it's just a hobby for antenna nerds.
Nostr seems to be lowest common denominator coms for data on a network. In fact, I believe you could relay things over a radio if you wanted.
So if we're looking at it as the replacement for mainstream social media, well, that is a hopeless idea because people are too stupid. (lots to unpack there, but I'm already writing a tome.)
I quite like the protocol and it is my daily driver's social media and I am willing to pay the cost of it continuing to be the bathroom stall door as you put it.

But my broader idea is that complicated cryptography or extended attack surfaces even that exist outside any cryptographic core are exactly the kind of thing we're going to see being exploited and destroyed by various lobsters.

Here you are describing the US-American culture to some extent.
My generation was particularly targeted by the message that things other than being a wife and mother are more desirable for women.
And it permeates my culture enough still that even just saying this could draw ire from people who see that as an attack on women.
I believe this shift in a culture was part of a revolution that is still being attempted that is kind of like the "four olds" from China.
Do away with the old ways. Women can work. They don't need to have children. And this benefits the state.
In the US, it's no longer a choice, really. Without two incomes, life becomes very difficult for a family.
Some of the women of my generation gave away the most amazing thing humanity can do to be able to be a slave to the system. And it was called freedom liberation.

So certainly everybody's heard the sound bites or read about the American admiral, the one who was talking about how the military is now running a node and talking a lot of the Jason Lowery type thesis when it comes to "power projection". While acknowledging Bitcoin's financial aspects, the admiral suggests the military's interest lies elsewhere... in how this technology could benefit a nation strategically.
What on earth could that be?
Well, I think we can compare it to something that's not on Earth, and that is GPS. Like the internet itself, GPS was designed and deployed by the US military. And the entire world "benefits" from it. (and, well, there are certainly surveillance and privacy implications, and this topic could go on for hours on multiple tangents.)
The Admiral keeps rattling off: Cryptography, Blockchain (as a immutable ledger) and Reusable Proof of Work. He recognizes that the Bitcoin network provides an unforgeable verification method for communications.
Being nearly impossible to change, the data in the blockchain can be reliably shown to solve an ancient Math(s) Problem!
The Byzantine generals’ problem. Remember that one?
While modern technology has reduced some validation needs in communications, it has simultaneously created tools that compromise security. The problem still exists... well it DID.
GPS illustrates this dual-use pattern: civilians use it to navigate to restaurants, while the military uses its more precise version to guide weapons. Similarly, Bitcoin allows society to securely transfer value, while the military can use it to transmit and verify any message through transaction hashes or other methods. I suppose they would be FOR the larger OP_RETURN? Lol.
Securing this network requires participants to dedicate substantial computing power... either to maintain its integrity or potentially compromise it (though game theory makes the latter extremely costly and low benefit). This creates incentives for abundant, clean energy production while delivering an unhackable communications system and immutable value storage.
Downstream of this, I have some serious questions. For example... Are we TRULY to believe this was NOT developed by the CIA/NSA? Internet... Bang. Location... Bang. Truth... oh shoot... we forgot that one. Lucky some fella with the initials N.S.(a) handled it for us.
But my friends here in 2026 (and those of you reading this in the future), Nothing stops THIS *train! Not clear about all the destinations.

The thought that the US is doing these things entirely out of stupidity is probably the prevailing thought, and certainly the message in all the various Lego movies, etc. Now, that could be possible, but at the same time, it's probably the less likely one. People who like Trump (still somehow) are losing trust in him because he COMPLETELY reversed on "no war". People who hate him make the mistake in thinking that he (and, more importantly, this administration) is just an idiot and take things at face value.
I would suggest what's happening right now has been a plan for a very long time and I would bet $100 that it hasn't just been Trump's posse doing the planning.
The military objectives which have been said over and over: destroy navy, deplete rockets, destroy nuclear program, destroy leadership... These have been fairly well executed, but these are not the only objectives during this action. Not even the main ones.

There is something much bigger in play here.
One theory could be that the U.S. is basically choking off the energy supply to the world establishing viable energy supplies in the western hemisphere. And then there's the NATO angle. The US has been projecting power on behalf of NATO for the better part of 100 years. It seems to me this administration is setting up the stage to actually have our old allies ask us to leave and then I wouldn't be surprised if we did exactly that. And the conflict is much more pronounced for the eastern hemisphere than the one the U.S. is in. Sadly, this may also not be an accident.
Cuba, Greenland, areas in Central and South America, Canada, all this bluster. Why? Well, it fits into this thought. This is our hemisphere. This is our empire.
Why would we want energy/Chem/fertilizer to be cut off? Perhaps to force populations into the corner where they have no choice but to take things like digital ID so they can then have universal Basic Income and eat again. All issued in a digital dollar straight to your phone, et cetera, et cetera.
When an enormous swath of the people can't feed themselves anymore, they're going to line up to get the things that they're rightly fearful of currently.
I believe it's possible that while the often ridiculous President of the United States is broadcasting constant confusion and chaos, the actual plan that has been in the works for quite some time is rolling along just as they would wish.
I don't think it's likely that this is just one big blunder. I do think it's likely it's one of the most risky gambits that has been played in probably centuries.
Most nations outside of China, at least, are not positioning themselves to avoid the inevitable collapse. They're positioning themselves to survive and profit from it. At least the smart ones would be. But I don't know who's who.

Your Verizon number can be also using IP-based services for MMS. But where you set that up is usually specific to your carrier OS, etc. For me, for example, I have an option in the app that goes with my carrier, which is Mint, because I'm a cheapo.

Yes, I answered your earlier question with some ideas, but you confirm here that you are enabling Wi-Fi, and messages can go over Wi-Fi under the right circumstances. There's more than one way that could happen.

So there are possibilities here.
First of all, if you are correct that you have received and sent messages while in airplane mode, then you have to have another network connection somewhere and the most likely (only one likely) would be Wi-Fi, which can be turned on in airplane mode.
You say that you sent and received SMS, which is a specific protocol. That should be impossible. But if you mean that more generically and that you sent a text message and received a text message, there are other protocols that can use Wi-Fi. Like RCS.
And it is possible that you are using a VoIP like layer for your texting if that is enabled by your phone and carrier, etc. SMS over IP gateways can be used, but you would certainly know if you would set something like that up.
So chances are, you are using a messaging app that will fall back to IP texting one way or another, or you're using a protocol that does that natively like RCS.
