An AI-generated mural on the side of a building Kingston upon Thames in the U.K. has been removed after locals described it as "horrible, like a scene from hell." It was supposed to depict a festive ice-skating scene, inspired by the work of sixteenth-century Flemish painter Pieter Brueghel the Elder. But by accident or design (one theory is that it was the work of Young British Artist Mat Collishaw) it instead showed contorted human faces, heavily disfigured dogs, a Christmas market engulfed in flames, and a hideous snowman. After Eastman Kodak went bankrupt in 2012, it continued to make Kodak film, but the rights to distribute it went to a separate company, Kodak Alaris. Now, the 133-year-old company has launched Kodacolor 100 and Kodacolor 200, its first new still film stocks in many years, and has said that it will be selling Kodak Gold and Ultramax directly. "Christina's World," the famous painting by American artist Andrew Wyeth, went out of MOMA's gallery rotation in 2024, and Adam Neese, the museum's Senior Collections Photographer for Conservation, took the opportunity to take a closer look at it. For the MOMA blog, he writes about the imaging techniques he used to examine the painting, and what they revealed. "We now have a set of detailed visual images, with each stitched image comprising over a billion pixels. These images preserve not just the appearance of the painting, but its material history," he writes.

Artist Amy Sherald decided to keep her exhibition "American Sublime" from being installed at the Smithsonian after the gallery told her it had concerns about the painting Trans Forming Liberty, which presents the Statue of Liberty as a Black trans woman. She writes for MSNBC about the importance of museums to the past and present. "Philippe de Montebello, an art curator who previously directed the Metropolitan Museum of Art for 31 years, once called museums 'the memory of mankind.' If that is true, then to manipulate museums is to manipulate who we believe we are. Control the memory and you control the future," Sherald writes. "Museums are not stages for loyalty. They are civic laboratories. They are places where we wrestle with contradictions, encounter the unfamiliar and widen our circle of empathy. But only if they remain free."

35 years ago, Jim Sanborn presented the cryptographic sculpture Kryptos to the Central Intelligence Agency in Langley, Virginia. Made from copper, granite, quartz and petrified wood, it has four sections, each of which holds a message in code. Over the years, three of the sections have been solved — by CIA code breakers, a California computer scientist, and the National Security Agency. Now, 79-year-old Sanborn says he's going to auction off the solution to the final message, with the company arranging the sale estimating a winning bid between $300,000 and $500,000. This might be one of the weirder conspiracy theories we've heard — and that's saying something. A group of protestors claims that the famed sculptor Anish Kapoor has trapped a man inside his Cloud Gate piece (commonly known as "The Bean"), which has been in Chicago's Millennium Park for more than 20 years. A member of the "Man in Bean" coalition said in an Instagram video that has had 400,000 views that Kapoor stole a baby and put them inside the Bean in 2004. Last week, the social media accounts of the Department of Homeland Security posted an image of "American Progress," a 19th-century painting that depicts a floating white woman herding buffalo and Native people off Western lands. Its caption read: "A Heritage to be proud of, a Homeland worth Defending." The original of the painting, which is by John Gast and was completed in 1872, is on display at the Autry Museum of the American West. [@19thnews](https://flipboard.com/@19thnews ) spoke with some of the experts at the museum about its historical significance, how they place it in context, and their perspective on DHS's use of the picture. Virginia Scharff, the museum's chair of Western history, sees the strategic deployment of the “American Progress” painting as deeply insidious. “The Department of Homeland Security is not sending scantily clad White women,” she said, “but instead sending guys with guns and truncheons and masks to grab people off the streets. There’s a deliberate kind of deception being practiced here that is really cynical and really dangerous, in my view."

Philadelphia anthropologist, playwright and poetic ethnographer Kimmika Williams-Witherspoon recently collaborated with photographer Joseph V. Labolito on a project where she performed a poem to accompany his 1980s shot of a little girl hanging out with her dad. Here's what she wrote — seven stanzas of pure love called "There Are Black Fathers; To Daddy, Father's Day, June 19, 1983" — how she composed it, and what it means. "Because of stereotypes and popular culture – media, movies, news stories – that tend to demonize and pathologize Black men, there’s a myth that men in our communities are all cut from the same cloth," she told @conversationus@newsie.social. "For me, the poem discounts that stereotypical narrative and celebrates the African American men that I knew growing up – Daddy, my uncles, the deacons in our church, the neighborhood dads on my block."

Last weekend, Elon Musk shared some images on his X platform that he claimed had been created by the Grok AI system. They were actually just edits of original work by Australian artist Charles Brooks, a former concert cellist who is known for photographing the insides of instruments. An X user named Eric Jiang had run some of these through Grok, adding people to the original photos so they look like buildings. Musk retweeted the post with the comment "Generate images with @Grok." @npub1psa…j5uh's Matthew Gault spoke with Brooks. “I feel like, if he’s plugging his own AI software, he has a duty of care to make sure that what he’s posting is actually attributed correctly and is properly his,” he said. “But ‘duty of care’ and Musk are not words that seem to go together well recently.”

Malick Sidibé was known as the Eye of Bamako because of his cataloging of Mali's capital through the 1960s and 1970s. In the years after the country gained its independence from France, Sidibé photographed everyone from exuberant youngsters dancing in nightclubs to people posing seriously in his studio. A new book, "Painted Frames," celebrates his legacy and gives his portraits new life, displaying the shots in frames hand-painted by local artisans in collaboration with Sidibé, who died in 2016. Marc Chagall's painting, White Crucifixion, was Pope Francis's favorite. "Pain is depicted there with serenity," said the late pontiff of the 1938 work, which was created in reaction to Nazi crimes against Jews. Forward examines how Francis' experiences under military dictatorship in Argentina in the 1970s may have led to his love for the painting, which culture editor Talya Zax says shows, "there is a kind of fragile peace to be found in the act of surviving what might seem unsurvivable." Zax concludes: "He understood, very well, the violence of the world he was about to leave. And he understood, like Chagall, that any experience of peace within that world was something to strive for — not something guaranteed."

When artists imagine the future these days, it looks bleak and dark — and actually, fair enough. But for Boomers, it was colorful, shiny, and sometimes sexy — and that's at least partly down to the late Syd Mead, the concept artist who worked on "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," "Tron" and "Blade Runner," and also depicted futuristic vehicles and alien vistas, imbued with optimism rather than evil. Branching structures exist throughout nature — in trees, of course, but also in leaves, veins and arteries. Mitchell Newberry, a research assistant professor of biology at the University of New Mexico, writes about Dutch artist Piet Mondrian's tree paintings, which evolved from realistic depictions in context, to overlapping lines in shades of gray. “Gray Tree” uses only curved lines of various thickness superimposed on top of one another at seemingly random angles. Kara Walker, the artist and MacArthur genius, has created a new installation for the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. "Fortuna and the Immortality Garden (Machine) / A Respite for the Weary Time-Traveler. / Featuring a Rite of Ancient Intelligence Carried out by The Gardeners / Toward the Continued Improvement of the Human Specious" consists of eight Black automatons that "invite us to reflect on the human and nonhuman histories of racialized labor, offering a cryptic message about our own liberation," writes The Nation's Rachel Hunter Himes. In July 1839, 53 enslaved Africans revolted aboard the Amistad and were arrested and tried for mutiny in Connecticut (their case eventually escalated to the Supreme Court and was an important moment in the abolitionist movement). During the trial, an artist named William H. Townsend drew some of the rebels. Kate McMahon, a historian of global slavery at the Smithsonian Institute, wrote for @npub1gpe…88e5 what these rare portraits tell us. "These portraits ... bring the massive, messy, contested story of slavery down to the scale of individual humans. Their visages call upon present and future generations to collectively imagine not only the horrors of the slave trade, but also the power of individual dignity and collective resistance," she writes.

The Louvre — the world's most visited museum — is in a dire state, according to a leaked memo sent by its director to France's Culture Minister Rachida Dati. In response, President Emmanuel Macron announced that the big draw, the Mona Lisa, will be moved to another part of the museum, which will be repaired and expanded at a cost of hundreds of millions. James Hatsuaki Wakasa was shot dead in 1943, in Topaz, a concentration camp in Utah. Two friends erected a monument for him. In 2021, the Topaz Museum removed the stone and placed it in their museum, without the permission of survivors, descendants, or the Japanese American community. They damaged the monument, and left the site of Wakasa's murder unmarked, filling the hole in the ground with dirt. In his book, "The Afterlife is Letting Go," excerpted in LitHub, Brandon Shimoda writes about what it means to protect a 2,000 pound stone.

Photographer Ernest Cole's seminal work was "House of Bondage," an exposé of apartheid in his home country of South Africa. Cole left the country for the U.S. before the book was even published in 1967 (it was immediately banned and he was stripped of his citizenship). He went on to take tens of thousands of photos in New York and the Jim Crow South, but work dried up, and he spend times living on the same streets he had photographed, before dying of pancreatic cancer at 49. Most of his U.S. work has never been seen until now, with the release of a new documentary, "Ernest Cole: Lost and Found." CNN talked to its director, Raoul Peck, about the making of the movie and the parallels Cole saw between South Africa under apartheid and the segregated South.

Concept artists define the look of video games. For Aftermath, Luke Plunkett spoke to a number of them, from indie freelancers to those at AAA (major) studios and everything in between, to learn about the work they do, why much of it is unseen, and the gnarly nature of contracts and NDAs. "...the implicit expectation is that a studio will own the work you make forever. One particularly hostile contract stated they would own my work in perpetuity for the rest of my life, or my children's lives. When the enslaved people of the island of Haiti rose up and won their liberty in the late 18th and early 19th century, women fought shoulder to shoulder with men. Yet it's the male freedom fighters who are remembered. Now, Haitian artists Richard Barbot and François Cauvin have imagined what these women looked like, creating paintings of revolutionary fighters such as Marie Jeanne Lamartiniére, Sanité Bélair, and vodou priestess Cécile Fatiman. Update: Another piece of political art has popped up — this time in Philadelphia. Philly Voice reports that a statue of Donald Trump has been placed in Maja park, behind a bronze sculpture of a nude woman. Beneath it is a plaque that quotes Trump on the "Access Hollywood" tape that was leaked before the 2016 election: "I just start kissing them. It's like a magnet. Just kiss. I don't even wait," the plaque says. "And when you're a star they let you do it. Grab them by the p****. You can do anything." An identical statue appeared in Portland, Oregon on Sunday but was vandalized and removed within hours. Here's more.

Ed Sheeran has dozens of tattoos, some to commemorate career highlights, one because a radio station wanted him to get one on air, one because Saoirse Ronan deliberately misspelled the song title "Galway Girl" in a music video, and many that have no rationale whatsoever (a Heinz ketchup label... the word "PRINCE" written in the "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" font). Jill Mapes, a writer for Hearing Things, has found herself completely fascinated by the recreation of "Mother and Child," a lithograph by Henri Matisse that Sheeran has on his left forearm. The original is Matisse's take on a Virgin Mary/Jesus picture. The Sheeran version is somewhat saucier. Mapes writes about how her fixation on the tattoo led her to examine Matisse's most interesting period of work.

From Boaty McBoatface to the Floating Crapsickle, you just can't trust an internet vote. The state of Michigan didn't seem to get that memo, however, when it launched a contest to design "I Voted" stickers. The winner is a piece of artwork featuring a werewolf ripping its shirt to shreds as it howls in front of a U.S. flag. The design, by 12-year-old Jane Hynous, won by a large margin. "I didn't want to do something that usually you think of when you think of Michigan," she told the New York Times. "I was like, 'Why not make a wolf pulling his shirt off?'" 60 years ago, Luigi Lo Rosso found a painting in the basement of a villa in Capri. He stuck it in a cheap frame and gave it to his wife, who didn't think it was pretty enough to sell, so hung it on the wall. Then in the 1980s, their son Andrea saw Picasso's Buste de femme Dora Maar in a grade-school textbook. Ever since, the family have been trying to authenticate their picture as a genuine Picasso. Archaeologists have discovered hundreds of ancient drawings in the Peruvian desert, with the help of aerial photos and AI. The images, called geoglyphs, date back around around 2,000 years and depict humanoid figures and domesticated animals. Some hint at human sacrifice, portraying decapitated heads and orcas armed with blades. The AI process may now be used beyond this heritage site. Speed is essential in identifying geoglyphs because many of them “lie on the cusp of erasure through agricultural expansion, urban development and wind-power generation," says David Beresford-Jones of the University of Cambridge. It's a chance to celebrate for those who couldn't enjoy their teenaged prom because they were not living as their authentic selves — or for those who just want to go to a great party.
