I don't get it. I thought she was a well researched individual with proof.
I feel like her book probably is full of what ifs and no proofs now. I never read it, but from the interviews, I assumed she had based her statements on evidence but always took them with a pinch of salt.
I just don't think she could possibly have enough evidence to back her claims here.
Its also very vague and wishy washy and uses buzz words like "Epstien"... is epstein the center of EVERYTHING bad and evil in the world??!

Today, hot smartphone wallets save your private keys in the secure element at rest, but pull it out to sign in the normal environment where malware can get access to it.
This is necessary because these secure chips can't do secp256k1 natively.
So I know private keys can't be kept locked in your phone's secure element today, but your phone CAN do challenge response with other cryptographic algos.
I'm just thinking out loud, but with taproot, can't we create addresses that use another algo that is not secp256k1 to embed a challenge into the spending conditions for your address that the smartphone CAN protect and sign with securely?
This way we have funds in a wallet that is a bit better than hot. It is in a secure element which is used to secure other things like your password manager and other things.
Possibly then we can also create modified XPUBs using your private key's public key and this other pubic key that relates to the secret used by your phone.
Overall, I'm thinking a new type of wallet that has 2 keys: your bitcoin key, and an adaptor key. You need both to spend funds, the algorithms are all standard public ones, we get the assurance that secp256k1 provides that it isn't secured by a potentially compromised NIST algo, but also the convenience that it is partially secured by a NIST algo that popular smartphones can secure.
Is this possible or a dumb idea?

The only pre-step would be to get an address to send to. Is that the part you're scared of?

Amber can also act as a remote signer on some websites. Snort.social is one.
So keys in one place, on your smartphone but you can still use nostr on your laptop or desktop.

This is completely untrue. The very first implementation of direct messaging was heavily critisized but it had end to end (e2e) encryption which is the minimum it should have.
This means no one but the intended recipients could read the messages, and no url manipulation could change this. Only how you handle your nsec, if you expose or leak that data, could compromise your private messages.
This is one of the things that was criticised, as well as how much metadata could be extracted, anyone could see "who was talking to who" and "when" and potentially get a rough idea of "how long those messages were".
This is much less information than that which staff at X potentially has access to. They can actually read the messages, the difference is that they reportedly keep that data private.
Being able to have private communications online across public infrastructure, not relying on false promises by companies and without unintended consequences such as leaking who you are talking to is the dream, and no one but #Nostr devs are working on this because #Nostr provides a public infrastructure to build for that isn't just "the internet" that doesn't require everyone to run a server. This has brought new life to these idealistic goals.
I think we are very close to getting almost everything we want, but we don't yet have the dream DM solution. We have a good solution that many nostr clients support called "gift wrapped messages", but I am most excited on an implenentation that builds on top of the Signal (yes the e2e messaging app) technology. It will provide much more security and privacy and even allow for private group messaging.
Btw, I don't know any client that supports private group chat, but I would be very cautious about how it worked.

#Nostr isn't a chat platform, many people think DMs should never have been tried, but it was tried, it serves a purpose but it isn't as fit for whistleblowers and humanitarians. Btw, X has never been fit for them either.
The fact that it existed meant people debated it and now we are getting something better. That something better will be probed and tested and it will be improved constantly as we discover problems over time.
1. Don't use #NOSTR for DMs, it was never its primary purpose anyway.
2. Don't use X for it either, it is actually worse.
3. Use Signal or SimpleX for chat, if you want to use Nostr as your contact list, then look into 0xChat or KeyChat for Nostr as more security focused applications.
4. #Nostr actually has a chance of being the base of the most secure and useful DM/Chat protocol we have ever had. Support that. For yourself and for people who have never had this type of tool but are living in dystopian nightmares today.
5. We have only just begun.

So wait, a client will first search a small set of your preferred relays for your profile, then it will look for your follow list.
In the follow list, it has info about user profiles it finds your follows' profiles from your preferred relays and then in each profile, there is an outbox.
Now your client is querying for data across many relays for many people (optimising where it can) and aggregating that data before presenting it on screen.
Is that the gist of it or are there any technical mistakes?

Not sure, there are some Monero supporters that created their own clients that zap monero.
They are still on nostr, we still see their posts, they still see ours, but I think we just can't zap each other because one only pays and accepts in btc, the other only in monero.
Also there are a lot of people who don't post a zap lightning address, so we can't zap them either.

Thinking about how this could be useful.
My sister tells me she and her cousins keep live location on through Google so they can always tell where they are in case of emergency.
This doesn't do live reporting, but the thing that is interesting is being able to do this with a nym.
Better would be to use derived nyms. To the public, all location posts are from random nyms, but to them, they can see everything clearly.
But then there are timing attacks, distance based common sense that can deanonymise the data.
The best thing really is a private group between them.
So then what is this useful for?

I have been trying to run my own node with an external drive for a while now. Almost a year. On a pretty beefy chromebox turned linux box.
In that time, the external USB drive randomly disconnected 3 times and needed me to manually fix it. Worse still, Fulcrum, the electrum server I was recommended, just refuses to function after that and I need to restart the whole indexing.
I have retired the node temporarily and will replace it with an internal drive going forward. I don't recommend an external drive in general.
In the past I had an external drive (NVME inside an enclosure) connected to a raspberry pi and that straight up died. The NVME wouldn't function as a drive at all, so I couldn't even recover any of the data including Lightning channel states. Fortunately I was still able to recover most of the funds.

You connect the miner to a pool, but I think many people connect it to a software called solominer (I think).

Interesting... so what you're saying is that even if many of us self custody, if society as a whole choose to use custodial solutions where rehypothecation might really be happening, then it will naturally affect the value of Bitcoin.
The only way to fix it is to require payment in cold hard bitcoin.
And the only way to fix gold would be the same, except the markets for gold are in financial services... for using gold as a store of value.
So we gotta both encourage Bitcoin as a MoE over SoV, and eliminate the custodians. 🫡

In some cases, the app knows where it is at, in others, it forgets.
I had to verify my email, so you send me a code, but it was on my other profile, I switch quickly, get the code, switch back and the app loads back to the previous screen. So I type my email again, type the code I got before and it doesn't work.
I had to pull out my laptop to complete this step. 😥

Resetting the device is a little scary and not clear enough.
There is a bit that says "Resetting my device means that I will not be able to use it to set up my wallet on a new phone."

It relies on Firebase notifications (Android) to set up a device. But it doesn't tell you, it just crashes. Fortunately Graphene lets me see the crash report and I figured it out... had to continue on my other profile that has google play services.
