It depends on the criteria used. We look for multiple event publish types including changes to a user’s bio and accept those as proof of life.

That’s the highly scientific definition of a dormant npub. We leave it up to the individual user to decide what length of time warrants a purge. Usually 90 days is a good cutoff but you can always extend that.

Something we’ve been battling for a while! Slow relays and relay coverage gaps can make some active accounts appear dead when they aren’t.
We always recommend creating a backup first (Backups tab, one click). 💾
Review the kill list before purging. You can uncheck anyone you recognize, or add them to your Immunity List. 🛡
Re-scan if results look off. Slow relays sometimes miss live users on the first pass. 🔁
Better detection is coming in the next release.

Misbehaving client overwrites are the most common way your follow graph gets nuked. Plebs vs. Zombies now scans your relays (plus a broad archival set) for older versions of your follow list and lets you republish a previous one, even if you’ve never backed up your list before. It’s like magic! 🎩🪄✨

Nostur is the only iOS client that saves your follows and alerts you when it detects a change since the last time you opened it, so you can restore if you lost all or part of your list.
If you do a purge on #PlebsVsZombies it will alert you.

You can restore using #PlebsVsZombies but only if you've previously backed up. Other options are Nostur for iOS and the nostr.land relay.
All clients should offer a follows restore feature. Few do.

I've looked into this and the issue comes down to relay coverage during scanning.
The scan checks a set of popular relays with a limited lookback window. Users who mainly post to relays outside that set (regional, community, paid relays) might not have their recent activity picked up. This can cause active users to show wrong "last posted" dates or get flagged as zombies when they shouldn't be. 😱
I'm working on a fix to expand relay coverage and the scan window. For now, always double-check before purging, especially if someone's "last activity" date doesn't look right.

At long last…
Plebs vs. Zombies v0.8 is now testing NIP-46 remote signing! 💥
This has been a long journey to get working. There are still some limitations you should be aware of. If you have a massive follow list, over 900 follows, there's no guarantee the app will be able to sign events for you. This is a protocol limitation: NIP-44 encryption has a hard limit of 64KB, and there's no way around that. If you have a shit ton of zombies to purge, you’ll need to use a browser extension or sign in with your private key instead (which we now also offer as a last resort, stored locally in your browser and never shared).
The good news is, even when signed in with a remote signer, you can still back up your follows. We now handle compression and chunking to store them on your relays for you. You just won’t be able to purge follows directly through the remote signer if your follow list is too large.

We identified the issue as being related to the nostr.band relay, which seems to have succumbed to the zombie apocalypse. We've removed this relay from our defaults and optimized the relay set further to prevent unresolved user profiles from appearing.
