If we’re going to do geoengineering/SRM the first thing we need to do is have a computer model showing how it would work where scientists agree the benefits outweigh the costs.
It seems most people interested in the topic aren’t actually interested in doing that work and skip straight to the part where they pollute the environment with ballons filled with a highly toxic, corrosive pollutant
https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/science/in-2022-a-california-startup-began-floating-sulphur-filled-balloons-into-the-sky-to-dim-the-sun-and-sell-cooling-credits-within-weeks-mexico-had-banned-solar-geoengineering/amp_articleshow/132514514.cms

In the UK, “wind and solar have generated more electricity than fossil fuels for a record 15 months in a row. […] this included a full winter season for the first time in 2025-26.
Yes, that’s right, renewables work in the UK in the winter.

Just because nobody cared to study the problem and actually attribute the deaths that were happening doesn't mean nobody died.
But a million nukebros on the Internet will tell you nuclear power is the world's safest power source. (wrong)

Nobody died from radiation at Fukushima! (also wrong, trivially debunked, and still repeated to this day for whatever reason)

I think of Navajo children in Church Rock, New Mexico who, following the largely forgotten 1979 United Nuclear Corporation (UNC) uranium mill spill frequently played in, bathed in, and drank from the contaminated Puerco River, which was polluted with 93 million gallons of radioactive waste after a disaster that released more radiation than Three Mile Island.
United Nuclear Corporation (UNC) was a key part of the nuclear power industry's fuel supply chain.
Nobody died, right?

I grew up where kids having scars for cleft lip and palate were such a common thing that I learned the terms "cleft lip and palate" as a child.
It took decades to connect my trauma to people who grew up around other sources of low level ionizing radiation like depleted uranium rounds and suffered similar birth defects. See also "Gulf War Syndrome"

There are a million nukebros on the Internet insistent on mansplaining to me that low-level ionizing radiation poses no danger. It certainly hasn't killed anyone, has it? And if it did, it certainly wasn't as part of acquiring raw material feedstocks for nuclear fuel supply chain, was it?
Nah, that's just some Simpsons-induced alarmism.

Sorry if I get a little bit salty about nuclear power every now and then it's simply because I grew up in the home of America's first uranium mill where they literally put radioactive mill tailings into all the sidewalks and buildings and foundations and everything it was a totally cool and normal thing to grow up to and discover when then had to demolish all the buildings and build massive removal highways to truck the remains off to a detention cell.

New metric shows renewables are 53% cheaper than nuclear power
A new metric for assessing total system costs puts a least-cost mix of offshore wind and solar at about €46 ($54.20)/MWh in a future climate-neutral energy system for Denmark. Researchers tell pv magazine that figure is less than half the equivalent cost of nuclear under the same conditions.

This makes me viscerally angry: Apple is being sued for $1.2 billion for not deploying an agent on everyone’s phones to perform a warrantless search of everyone’s iCloud files, which was scrapped due to being an obvious privacy nightmare

Elon Musk publicized the names of government employees he wants to cut. It’s terrifying federal workers.
Many of them are working in climate-related areas.

Firefighters Struggle to Break the Tesla Cybertruck’s “Transparent Metal” Glass During Emergency Response Training
Despite wielding heavy axes, it takes three blows to see the first crack and over 12 blows to break the window completely.
This, plus electrically operated doors with hard-to-find emergency releases makes the Cybertruck something of a death trap.

The hardest thing to process is the popular vote win. It’s just utterly demoralizing.

The first time Trump won, I was in a state of despair. This time I'm just numb, like the shock of what's happening hasn't caught up with me quite yet.

Pretty much all versions of bcrypt are vulnerable to second preimage attacks because they truncate the input to the first 72 bytes, meaning the hashes for messages longer than that will collide.
This resulted in a login bypass against Okta.

I guess we're at the "Trump is openly calling for the murder of his political enemies" stage of this election...
...but remember, it's the Democrats who have violent rhetoric, like using the word "fascist" to describe an extreme nationalist racist wannabe dictator demagogue who (checks earlier in post) wants to murder his political enemies

So weird to see the news continue to refer to both Helene and Milton as "once-in-a-century" hurricanes.
If you have back-to-back "once-in-a-century" events, maybe it's time to abandon the pretense that they're once-in-a-century.

The term "greenwashing" is thrown around a lot, but one place it really applies which isn't as widely recognized as it should be is plastic recycling, and in particular using it as a justification for single-use plastic:
California accuses ExxonMobil of lying about plastics being recyclable
The state alleges the oil company deceived “the public to convince us that plastic recycling could solve the plastic waste and pollution crisis.”

The Navajo Nation uses the least water per capita in the US but has the country’s most expensive water. They’re right next to St. George, Utah, which uses some of the most water per capita.
Supreme Court battles (and the most corrupt SCOTUS in US history), onerous “use it or lose it” requirements for water rights, and broken promises hold back running, piped water for the reservation.
The water they do drink is often contaminated with uranium, causing cancer.
