the fact that it has an escape key makes it superior to most OSKs I’ve seen in standard installations of other DEs. Love it!

I have so many things to say about Mozilla making a statement like this and none of them is very nice.
But let’s just enjoy the irony of “an **independent** browser might have to pull out of the market if Google cannot pay to keep anti competitive practices going”.

Either that or someone needs to ramp up marketing because they need money.
Anthropic and OpenAI are not about technology anymore and they haven’t been for some time.
Sure, we see some incremental improvements, but that doesn’t bring in the money to sustain them.
So whatever little improvement they can make needs to be sold at exponentially the value of the previous model which was sold by the same playbook.

It feels like traveling to conferences in Europe has significantly gone up in price.
I just looked at train tickets to Paris. Twice what I paid pre Covid.
Italy? Either fly with a short stop in Romania (makes sense, right?) or 4x with the train what I would pay for fuel when driving.
I’ve flown to Boston for less than what I’d pay to get to Portugal.

My Mastodon instance is getting a bit expensive and I want to bring it to my own server. My options from what I can tell
- Mastodon: “get a dedicated server - lol”
- Snac: C is fine, just hold the gun properly
- GoTo Social: I want my little bubble or I throw a tantrum
- Akkoma: mix mix mix mix mix
- Iceshrimp: here’s the rewrite of the rewrite of the fork of the rewrite
I love that we got so many viable options. I think I’ll end with Snac or GTS, but I have some reading to do first.

I am looking for something I can multi pair, so USBC isn’t an option. (I usually use my phone in portrait mode)

2026-07-07 09:05:58 UTC

I am looking for a keyboard to pair with my #iPad and phone when moving around the house and going out.
I gave up on foldable or mini, they don’t work for me.
The Logitech Keys 2 Go seems like a decent option even if some people seem to not be happy with the quality (Logitech, huh?).
Satechi OntheGo seems fun with the option for a stand, but low quality.
I was thinking NuPhy Air v3 60 or Lofree Flow 2 60. I am actually typing this on the Lofree and I am not sure the price matches the quality.

I am curious which part of the usual security stuff that comes with hosting you refer to, because secure by default feels like a must.
I’d love to see something like tailscale standardized and baked into the software directly (apps and browser) instead of a separate host level service.

2026-06-26 17:41:23 UTC

very fair and good points.
I guess when it comes to target audience I wonder where the line between casual user who wants a desktop app like a Claude desktop to engineer who doesn’t bother making something like Tailscale work if the Ui would be better is.
I honestly think this is an interesting problem to solve beyond coding agents. A good solution would make so many self hosting options more viable to a wider audience.

Cross platform complexity and remote workflows are IMHO both (good and valid) reasons. What surprises me the most is that we went straight to TUIs, but mostly skipped web UIs.
I’ve build a web interface for my own coding agents and it does everything the TUI does but is far more usable on mobile.

Over a decade various PMs now tried to explain me the concept of tshirt size with the goal of me not thinking this is complete and utter nonsense.
None succeeded. I doubt anyone ever will.
I support basically anything that helps my PMs get their job done. Eng - Product isn’t a one way street for one party to demand, one to give.
But I draw the line at things no one can explain a reason for. At this points it’s purely performative.

1. I don’t think the change should impact Django’s server as we aren’t flagged as NSFW server. So no one needs to do this. Or do we regularly do streaming etc in there?
2. Matrix was a nightmare to use, we ditched it for Delta Chat and no one ever regretted this (~ 32 people). Delta isn’t a good alternative here.
3. Using an OSS platform for an OSS project “feels better”.

I have to say @npub1ama…cwvh is unnecessary hurtful to me today.
me “I have a hard time getting into Zed. I try to not run vim emulation. I have to select text with a mouse when editing code. Who does that?!”
@npub1ama…cwvh “people under 30.”
I felt that in my lower back… >:’(

I never had a reason to use anything but Apple Calendar. Having to use MS exchange / Office365 for a client might make me evaluate Fantastical. How broken is the exchange integration in Calendar.app?!
Meetings not showing up, meetings not changing when rescheduled, meetings not being deleted when cancelled,…

It looks like I cannot download my books from Amazon because I never owned a Kindle but only used the iPad app.
Guess I’ll either be in the possession of a Kindle for a single day before returning it or I’ll “buy” the books arrrrrrr-gain.

Modding CyberPunk on Linux (GoG)
- install Nexus Mod beta
- install mods
- find Wine Prefix tools in Heroic
- install VC
- get an error
- search the web
- reinstall red4ext and codeware
- get an error that the extension that crashed before is now outdated
- Nexus Mod dies and doesn’t start anymore
Guess my next playthrough will happen on Windows. #cyberpunk2077 #gamingOnLinux

Creating new CI jobs is like watching paint dry.
1. Update task definition
2. Push
3. Run
4. Go to 1
Except that there is a 2-5 minute delay between 1 and 4 and I’m not doing this often enough to get it right on first try.

I’m reading New X-Men and they changed the art style in the middle of the series and it bothers me more than it should…

I’m using Ollama to host LLMs (so llama.cpp underneath)
- system memory is usable
- if the model cannot 100% be offloaded to the GPU it’ll offload the maximum number of layers that fit in VRAM
- the GPU utilization goes down to 15-30%
- CPU utilization sits around 60%
A 32b model Q8 uses the 22GB available on the 4090 and 15GB system memory.
A response for 132k context takes about 3 minutes.
Same model, Q4 fully offloaded to VRAM 19s.

I am trying to get a hang of Node-RED, but whenever I try to click together a workflow and add some logic to it my only thought is how much easier it would be to simply write a script and run it via cron.
Node-RED itself is well done, it just doesn't click for me.

if I’d be hosting the instance myself I’d do that, but I don’t have that level of control over the environment :)

@npub18sk…l2gu hey, are there any options to geo block UK visitors from visiting an instances web interface?
With the online safety act around the corner and mastodon instances likely being in scope that’d be a pretty helpful feature.

I’m sure this will be frustrating and fun at the same time :)

If the identification works I’d love to release the service and have all instances add to a central block list.
But I have the strong feeling that a shared block list will simply end in abuse. Crawlers honoring robots.txt will be blocked by people adding them to the list because they disagree with the company owning the crawler.
Basically the fate of any shared block list with random people being able to add entries to. :/

A small project is coming along just fine. A service to handle a specific path.
Basically a hidden (not displayed to the user) link on a website disallowed in robots.txt.
Visit the link and the connection is kept open till the crawler times out.
Crawler UA and IP are stored.
Second request from this combination 50ms before the timeout start streaming /dev/random or something similar.
I still need to test how links like this behave with screen readers etc bot to accidentally mess with someone.

I like the idea, but I’d be a no for Matrix, a yes for the general idea!
I’ve been running my own matrix server for private and business for 6-7 years. If I could make the call again I’d setup a Jabber server.
The UX of Element is atrocious. And new features supposedly fixing some of it is playing whack a mole across multiple GitHub issues, a new services / app.
Synapse is a resource hog and Element decided to optimise it for paying governments because “regular users don’t need it”.

how close are we to TextualVim? :)
It feels like the individual building blocks are all there and talking to LSPs from Python isn’t that hard. Or is there anything major missing I’m not aware of?

It’s the first in (I think) many years that I use raw SQL with user input in a Django project. I just re-read the documentation “just in case”…
Adding search via SQLite FTS5 to my blog because @npub1ama…cwvh complained she couldn’t find a post.
Overall it’s not a lot of work for a basic match and rank. Just not a fan of having to think about SQL injection in 2024 while using Django :) #django

I tried Joplin. I didn’t really warm up to the app, but might have been able to live with it.
The deal breaker was sync basically acting sporadic via webdav (Nextcloud). Sometimes it was immediate, sometimes I needed to restart the app.
Is Joplin Cloud performing better with sync?
