I’ve been using Jellyfin for 5 or 6 years.
Plex is steering towards entshitification for a few years now.
I’m on the edge of buying a Plex lifetime pass and hope for the best, knowing I’ll be disappointed in a few years.
I want podcasts and music without hosting two more apps. I want a reliably stream encode (I still have Jellyfin choke on some 4k transcodes despite the 3060ti in the box). And don’t get me started on client UIs. There’s a reason I’m paying for Infuse.

As I’m not a regular on the Discord server I don’t feel strongly about any option, but three thoughts.
1. I don’t think the change should impact Django’s server as we aren’t flagged as NSFW server. So no one needs to do this. Or do we regularly do streaming etc in there?
2. Matrix was a nightmare to use, we ditched it for Delta Chat and no one ever regretted this (~ 32 people). Delta isn’t a good alternative here.
3. Using an OSS platform for an OSS project “feels better”.

First mail server migrated from Stalwart to Mox.
I think I’ll have to double check the configuration. I would have expected the mailboxes used for reporting and listed in the DNS entries Mox generates to be created automatically which doesn’t seem to be the case.
Otherwise things seem pretty decent. I like that the admin interface uses port forwarding via SSH instead of being exposed to the Internet.

We watched Jurassic World Rebirth. Not bad. It’s certainly not a good movie. Nice to run in background if you like the franchise.

Two KVMs to test. The USB one is mostly to not carry around a monitor every time I need to do something on hosts without one. The over IP one gets a proper test run and if it works I’ll likely order a pack of 10.

that’s my only concern to be honest. Operational temperature is 35 max.
I just put a thermometer there hooked up to HomeAssistant to graph over a week or so. It’s well ventilated with two windows, large (oil tanks) and the heater itself relatively new.

Hm, our boiler room is right on the other side of the server racks. I might put all the UPS there and pull a few cables through the wall. Not ideal, but the 3000VA UPSs are noisy. And the boiler room is technically designed for things going wrong and being on fire in a worst case scenario.

GeekPi on Amazon should do the trick. They have a large catalog of 10” racks in various heights (I think 4u is the smallest) and vertical Pi mounts for these racks. Plus a few other neat things for 10” racks that’ll make the setup look good :)

What are we using these days as bare metal hypervisor for Windows, Linux and BSD guests?
Last I setup a server like this I was paying for ESXi. Not a fan of proxmox. It seems like XCP-ng is something people are divided in if it’s good or not.
I’m okay setting up KVM and putting a web interface on top, if the interface works and provides a console so I don’t have to mess with RDP etc on clients for basic administrative tasks. #devops #ops #sysadmin

Our internal service host alone is now at 20 docker compose stacks, it is slowly getting tedious to update all of them.
So I did the only logical thing - ignore everything I know I should be doing (and do in production) and simply yoloOPs it with a bash script :D

I’ll likely setup Plausible for two projects we are launching to have some analytics. And self hosted plus GDPR compliant without cookies is the right amount of analytics for my taste.
I might give it a test run in my blog to see how it actually works and to get a feel for Clickhouse which is the big unknown to me in this setup. #selfhosting #selfhosted

- 18 byte message supposed to fit into a 16 byte package
- the first byte of the control parameter overlaps with the last byte of the header according to the docs
- 1 byte using 7 bits for different operations, 98 bytes padding
- set parameter X value 94 byte, get parameter X value 48 byte
- needs to receive a heartbeat package every 50ms, cannot send one more often than every second

One thing I never thought of when writing Ruby was Perl. The syntax is IMHO one of the really nice things about Ruby.

I decided to look into the overhyped language that looks like Perl got sick on top of C again now that some years passed and I must say the pretentious borrow checker at least decides to spit out helpful errors.
The community seems to have shifted away from “insufferable elitist” a long time ago, so that’s great.
I have an IoT project coming up and implementing the service in Go would only take around two days. So I might use this as an opportunity and give #rust a proper chance.

Ordered a replacement keyboard with US layout for my Lenovo X1 Carbon. The service manual to swap the keyboard spawns 20 pages. You have to start at the bottom cover and literally remove *everything*.
I remember swapping a broken keyboard on an IBM T20. 2 screws and two plastic clips. Not even 5 minutes of work.
The X1 is lovely. It’s ultra portable. But right now I wish I’d be carrying a brick with the build quality and service characteristics of old IBMs. #lenovo #ibm #thinkpad

the refesh rate depends on the screen, the GPU, the driver and the connection between screen and GPU.
There’s a chance that your GPU only supports 60Hz at the resolution of your monitor. It might also be limited by the cable.
What exactly are you running?

thanks, I’ve found a mention of it in a thread but wasn’t sure about the implementation.
I’m currently looking into data persistence server side. It seems like there’s a lot auf auto deletion going on and I have some users that’ll struggle with migrations / backups, so having the history server side would be preferable.

Delta.chat seems pretty neat and one of the few times PGP is implemented in a user friendly way.
I very much appreciate that it builds on top of email.
Lack of push for self hosted servers is a bit of an inconvenience, I’ll have to look into running my own with push proxy I assume? #deltachat

I’m slowly but surely annoyed enough by Matrix, MAS and Element (X) that I might just nuke the server and tell people to send me an email or something.
ElementHQs feels actively hostile to small scale self hosting while working on their “government enterprise optimizations” agenda.
I’ll have to look into sane alternatives that are usable by non technical folks which also support OIDC. Any recommendations? *good* mobile clients on iOS and Android are a requirement.

- get an error that the extension that crashed before is now outdated
- Nexus Mod dies and doesn’t start anymore

I’m using Ollama to host LLMs (so llama.cpp underneath)
- system memory is usable
- if the model cannot 100% be offloaded to the GPU it’ll offload the maximum number of layers that fit in VRAM
- the GPU utilization goes down to 15-30%
- CPU utilization sits around 60%
A 32b model Q8 uses the 22GB available on the 4090 and 15GB system memory.
A response for 132k context takes about 3 minutes.
Same model, Q4 fully offloaded to VRAM 19s.

I am trying to get a hang of Node-RED, but whenever I try to click together a workflow and add some logic to it my only thought is how much easier it would be to simply write a script and run it via cron.
Node-RED itself is well done, it just doesn't click for me.

If the identification works I’d love to release the service and have all instances add to a central block list.
But I have the strong feeling that a shared block list will simply end in abuse. Crawlers honoring robots.txt will be blocked by people adding them to the list because they disagree with the company owning the crawler.
Basically the fate of any shared block list with random people being able to add entries to. :/

A small project is coming along just fine. A service to handle a specific path.
Basically a hidden (not displayed to the user) link on a website disallowed in robots.txt.
Visit the link and the connection is kept open till the crawler times out.
Crawler UA and IP are stored.
Second request from this combination 50ms before the timeout start streaming /dev/random or something similar.
I still need to test how links like this behave with screen readers etc bot to accidentally mess with someone.

I like the idea, but I’d be a no for Matrix, a yes for the general idea!
I’ve been running my own matrix server for private and business for 6-7 years. If I could make the call again I’d setup a Jabber server.
The UX of Element is atrocious. And new features supposedly fixing some of it is playing whack a mole across multiple GitHub issues, a new services / app.
Synapse is a resource hog and Element decided to optimise it for paying governments because “regular users don’t need it”.

It’s the first in (I think) many years that I use raw SQL with user input in a Django project. I just re-read the documentation “just in case”…
Adding search via SQLite FTS5 to my blog because @npub1ama…cwvh complained she couldn’t find a post.
Overall it’s not a lot of work for a basic match and rank. Just not a fan of having to think about SQL injection in 2024 while using Django :) #django

I tried Joplin. I didn’t really warm up to the app, but might have been able to live with it.
The deal breaker was sync basically acting sporadic via webdav (Nextcloud). Sometimes it was immediate, sometimes I needed to restart the app.
Is Joplin Cloud performing better with sync?

probiere mal in Element aufs user Bild zu klicken, settings, security und dann unter Sessions die Session auswählen und darüber verifizieren.
Wenn das auch zickt evtl. temporär biometrischen / passcode unlock ausmachen auf beiden Geräten.

I understand the reasoning. So please see this question without judgement of any past or future decision, but I’m curious:
At which point - if at all - should the call be made that the platforms values ate not compatible with the communities value and a strong signal in form of community veterans and leaders leaving needs to be set?
If the majority of the old guard would vocally migrate to a different platform the community *might* follow is the thesis I guess.

Self hosting email kind of works decently well, but requires a good amount of attention for the most stupid reasons.
I’m inclined to join the “email is broken and it’s over crowd”. Pay someone else to make it their problem and keep usage to an absolute minimum. At least for business use.
I might setup a small inbound only system for spam and test mails.
Protons offer seems pretty good, but no imap is a deal breaker. Fastmail seems like the way to go. #email #selfhosting
