Completely understandable! I've played it since beta, with a couple breaks here and there, but this latest break might end up being permanent. ZOS completely destroyed the game's experience when they switched to a battle pass with "seasonal" content instead of DLCs and expansions.

I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've watched this video.
I didn't play EverQuest back in its glory days. My first exposure to the series was with EQ2 after the reveal of EverQuest Next (RIP). Even so, rewatching this reminds me of an era in MMO history when the genre was still primarily about being a roleplaying game, not a raid/endgame grind repeating with every expansion.

I've been playing a bit of Sonic x Shadow Generations and I can safely say, it's one of the better 3D Sonic games for sure. Like the original Generations, it thrives upon nostalgia while also dealing in new gameplay mechanics.
Having grown up on the Sonic Adventure games, and having gone through an edgy phase as a kid/teenager, Shadow was always my favorite character, so I'm glad they did him justice in this. Highly recommended so far!

One of the games that formulated my childhood was Star Wars: Rebel Assault II.
It's an on-rails shooter and not particularly amazing in terms of design, acting or CGI, but it stood right next to the original trilogy, building my earliest memories of Star Wars.
The sense of Star Wars atmosphere was spot on, and it placed you right into a story that FELT like one of the movies, yet didn't share any of their plots.

So, I've been playing a bit of GTA Vice City, and everyone told me "you have to use the classic lighting, it's better"... respectfully, I have to disagree. The classic lighting isn't terrible but especially in Vice City, the updated lighting accentuates the aesthetic of the game to PERFECTION.
I really do think the love for the classic lighting boils down to nostalgia rather than actual reasoning. Nothing wrong with that but the updated lighting looks great!
Left is classic, right is updated.

An off-topic post here and there is completely fine, like I said, I just encourage RG members to remember that retro content is the primary focus of RG. I can't force anyone to do anything (not the owner or a mod) but I really do encourage that.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that I wish that we could get back to posting stuff about retro games and retro culture, rather than making RG a general purpose instance for every sort of content under the sun.

To be clear, I'm not saying people need to ONLY post retro games or retro content in general (I don't always either) but early on, the rule was that the majority of posts needed to be retro-related. Now, it's not a rule, but it should still be the etiquette of a retro-themed community.
There are countless instances out there for other content types, whether that's tech, food, art, modern culture, etc. Many people have multiple Fedi accounts for this reason.

I've been keeping this to myself for a while now but I really can't anymore. As Retro Gaiden has grown, more people with varied interests have joined up. That's great!
On the other hand, the local timeline in the Live Feeds menu is notably dry of retro posts these days. I don't want to target anybody but the ratio of retro posts to other stuff is like 1:5 at this point... and that really bums me out, because this place was started primarily to be a place to discuss retro games/culture.

I think one of the loneliest parts of growing older is that you've had the time to witness the things you grew up with fade away, and you can't do anything about it.
Then, you know your children will never get to experience some of the things that helped shape you into the person you are.
Some things from my childhood are making a return, and that brings me endless joy, but there are some things that simply don't come back, leaving them only a nostalgic memory.

To end this rant, I just want to say that if you are able to stop looking at all the bad stuff in life, the good stuff shines brighter.
When you learn to look beyond what the system shows you to keep you ineffective and depressed, you start to see so much beauty, so much hope in this world where everyone seems to have lost all their optimism or desire to do anything except ironically become the eat-ze-bugs NPC drones they unironically mock daily.
God didn't intend for us to stay depressed.

It's also tied to how I feel about the drama and doomerism people seem to really be pushing.
Take the retro community, for instance: we all grew up in a better era and we can be homesick for that. That doesn't mean nothing good is releasing in modernity. It doesn't mean everything new is slop.
I enjoy both the old AND the new and my joy is fuller because of that. At the same time, I don't support mediocrity, but I don't feel bent out of shape when I come across it. I just simply ignore it.

Also, if anyone is curious why this thought popped in my head...
It's thanks to my return to GOG. I gradually grew apart from GOG over the past couple years and returned recently thanks to the new ownership.
Ever since I returned, I've been having a blast. Not that I've quit Steam, because I absolutely have not, but it's genuinely a good feeling to be able to appreciate and enjoy the greatness of both Steam and GOG at the same time. No fanboying, just enjoying both platforms!

2026-06-07 09:57:40 UTC

Know something I've learned over the past year or two? Being able to love something and not be angry about its flaws is extremely underrated.
Of course, you don't have to settle for mediocrity or compromise your morals, but not everything needs to be completely perfect to still be enjoyable.
This applies to every facet of life, from video games to current events to your daily routine.
Learn to appreciate the goodness and enjoy this beautiful life God has given us!

It's 100% the RAM/flash memory shortage that caused this price hike. Valve pretty much all but said that in the announcement post. That's why I'm not too heartbroken: knowing how Valve operates, they will likely bring prices down again when it's feasible to do so. Non-doomerist estimates say 2027 or 2028 is when the market will start to even out and prices will go back down, which would be great for the eventual release of the Steam Deck 2.

I definitely recommend Mafia 2 and Watch Dogs 2, though the other games in both franchises are also worth a play. I just consider the second entry to be the best game in both franchises.
Mafia 2's story is insane, a fantastic story about a guy who chooses crime at a young age and ends up trapped by his own choices. Watch Dogs 2's story is a great one about privacy, hacker culture, etc. and has great missions with incredibly refined gameplay that is just FUN to play.

2026-05-24 09:26:42 UTC

I don't think I'll ever truly understand why GTA is so beloved. Yes, during the PS2 era, they set the stage for most open world games today. However, after the PS2, the series was basically just retreading the same ground with better graphics. I actually have ZERO interest in GTA6 whatsoever.
Personally, I find the Mafia and Watch Dogs games infinitely better than GTA in EVERY way.
Better stories, better characters, twists on the gameplay loop, etc.

I have limited exposure to it having grown up mostly on Windows 9x, but I use a Linux CLI and these days, I always opt for Powershell in the rare cases where I use Windows because it supports Unix-like commands. As such, I'm very limited on what I know about using DOS.
I see some tutorials on Youtube, I'm just curious what y'all think.

They use Windows for most of the "normie" employees but I'd be willing to bet they use some form of Linux for the more secure stuff. Windows with Bitlocker is secure against criminals who steal a computer, but that's about it. LUKS on Linux is secure enough to make even powerful and advanced governments sweat. It's why they rely on metadata more than trying to crack encrypted data.

Such an incredible game... I really need to play it again, the atmosphere and writing is unbeatable.
Honestly, in their golden age, Interplay was pretty much the king of PC gaming. So many phenomenal CRPGs were released during that era, from Fallout to Baldur's Gate to Planescape: Torment. While some of those games were developed by other studios, Interplay both developed and published so many borderline flawless games back then.
Also, I never played the original but the enhanced was amazing!

I definitely wouldn't mind a Morrowind remaster but Oblivion really did seem to make more sense for them. A Morrowind remaster would be a bit of a Kobayashi Maru.
If they keep it true to the original gameplay, it won't sell too well and the series newbies will be mad. If they change it up "for a modern audience", the classic fans will hate it and potentially stop buying Bethesda games in general.
Oblivion was close enough to the modern formula that it definitely made the most sense.

2026-04-03 02:41:55 UTC

RE: https://retro-gaiden.com/@ncgaa/116337122021051535
A very special era for Bethesda. This was their "last chance" game. They were dealing with a sequence of commercial failures after Daggerfall and if Morrowind wasn't the smash hit it became, they probably would've shut down. We may never have gotten legendary games like Oblivion, Fallout 3 (and, by extension, New Vegas) or Skyrim.
Some people argue it doesn't hold up well but I disagree. Yes, some mods will make it a better experience, but ultimately, it's still a rock-solid RPG!

I'll give you Mother Brain, she's annoying in all the games except Super. Definitely disagree on the stealth sequence though, it was a twist that ties the whole story together IMO.

If you're on Linux and want a really cool way to resemble CLIs on older machines, this little program lets you do just that.
It's a separate terminal emulator launched via your existing terminal emulator and lets you change color schemes to mimic retro computers (C64, PET, IBM PCs, Apple ][, etc).
Pretty fun program! It's in a lot of distro repos but if not, you can get it here:

It'd be awesome if it is because I have the game on GOG (would prefer Steam but it is what it is) and that'd be awesome to just have without needing to pay again.

I haven't watched it yet but has there been any word on whether existing owners will get the enhanced version as a free upgrade?

With the darker, neon-driven 90s arcade vibe that the site has, my vote is for the peach-colored Windows 95-style cursor. Feels the most appropriate IMO.

Most people think of this game when they think of the N64 but funny enough, I never got to play that one! I was mostly addicted to Star Wars Racer and Rogue Squadron haha. I need to play this game at some point, it's kind of a must-play for that console :odysee_thinking:

Sucks that it had to come to this but it was a necessary move. Unfortunately, I was in the camp that was literally WAITING for the Fediverse to get infected with AI bots, it actually took longer than I expected :luigithink:

Vibe coding is cool for a quick script or personal usage but the way people vibe code entire applications or software suites is insane to me. Not only is it a security nightmare but man, coding used to be an art form before everyone made it cold and corporate :terry_nono:

I knew that Valve released the Orange Box but for some reason, I just never knew that CS was on any consoles... I wonder if it was a precursor to CS Source (still my favorite of the series)? :luigithink:

I'm not getting my hopes up but it'd be really nice if it's ACTUALLY true this time. KOTOR is a great game but taking the core story and rich RPG mechanics of that game and giving it a better combat system would make literally the best Star Wars RPG you could have.

I just learned about this upcoming indie game, it looks great! It's clearly inspired by Transport Tycoon and early SimCity. I'll definitely be giving that demo a try (if it works on Linux), it looks right up my alley.

I'm shocked by how many votes the SNES version got. Iv'e played both, they're both pretty fun, but the Genesis Aladdin game is a masterpiece of game design. Because of that and my childhood love of Aladdin (the films, even the direct-to-video sequels), the Genesis version was probably the 16-bit game I've played the most in my entire life!
