So ICE raided a construction site in our neighborhood and two of the workers tried to get away. They got in their truck, hit one of the ICE vehicles and drove off. The ICE officers *opened fire* on them. They abandoned their vehicle in the neighborhood to try to escape on foot. So now we’re all ordered to “shelter in place” and “stay away from windows” so the swarming gestapo can shoot up the place with a free hand.

Reading up on trees and how they use underground microrrhizal networks in the forest to communicate and transmit resources to each other. When one tree is in distress the surrounding trees send nutrients and defensive substances to help it recover. It’s not a sacrifice or loss of freedom: they know they need each other to survive droughts and insect infestations and that a sophisticated system of mutual aid is how to make that happen.
Makes you think, doesn’t it?

Agree.
On the one hand we have “whatever it is, if it slightly inconveniences me, it must be a product of the woke mind virus so I’ll do the opposite.” Then we have the liberal “you be you, I’ll be me, let’s not speak of solidarity” version. And that brings us to “criminals wear masks, so for public safety we must ban them.” Rather than learn anything we amped up some of the worst traits of our already highly entitled culture.

There’s not only no social pressure to help me remember the mask, there’s pressure to forget, ignore. Just be another upbeat plague carrier.

Similar experience here. I’ve been pretty consistent with masking and have only been sick a couple times in 5 years: one cold and one covid (just last month). But working from home I also have remained pretty isolated. And I tend to be forgetful. I keep masks in the car and often find myself walking into a store or office and then turning around to go back and get the mask. Or forgetting entirely.

Had two visits to the medical center this week. Hospitalizations for #flu, #RSV, and #COVID are spiking here. A nurse confirmed that they are short-staffed in the hospital because of illness. Crowds of people crammed into tiny waiting rooms yet not a mask in sight by any patient or provider. Not one!
I should have spoken up. Why didn’t I? The only thing we learned from the pandemic is to get really good at denial and keeping quiet.
I need to practice resisting that bullshit. Will you join me?
