My mother, the last member of my family aside from me, is in very serious condition and also in deep, practiced denial about it. She refuses any kind of medical care for religious reasons that I do not share, putting me in a very difficult spot as her medical power of attorney. Everything is extraordinarily fucked up in ways I won’t even try to explain. I may not be sharing much of anything here during this time.

I'm nearing a point where I need another software engineer to help me get my bootstrapped company SolarPlane.io off the ground. We have two big companies that have asked us to start pilot projects with them and there's a lot of work to get ready for those pilots.
But when it comes to hiring I have two problems that stop me cold: little money to pay (need a partner not an employee) and little capacity to handle a firehose of applicants. I refuse to use gen AI to screen applicants.

I’m looking to hire an artist for a small project.
My mom’s 87 and in a nursing facility. She loves adult coloring books and has covered the walls of her room with her work. She especially likes animal designs and gives them names and stories. I keep her supplied with books, but she wants DONKEYS. And I haven’t found her a book with a good donkey design. His impressively loud brays aren’t the only way Arturo communicates. For example if he wants to let me know the watering tubs are frozen or empty he knows how to say that silently and quite specifically: first he stares at me until I give him eye contact. Then he looks briefly at the thing that needs attention, pointing with his eyes and ears. Then he looks back at me to see if I got the message. He repeats this as needed until I start to move in a way that shows I got the memo. #asstodon #blep

A small joy. I found a second hand copy of a book my grandmother published in 1930. It's a collection of French short stories intended for teaching French to English speakers. Someone evidently commissioned a small print run from a print-on-demand shop in India a few years ago and now a copy is on the market. It even has a nice sewn leather binding.
I have physical copies of my grandmother's other books but have never laid hands on this one. She was a marvel. After 50 years I still miss her.

Getting together with spouse’s family reminded us how eccentric we are. Hanging out with normal people (suburbanites with Facebook accounts and smart TVs) is so disorienting. We have so few common reference points.
It also dawned on us that more than half of the “normies” we know are now alcoholics. It’s troubling how many friends and family will get the shakes if they go more than a few hours without alcohol. Their lives are organized around how to get that next drink. Oof, how to help? 😥

I sometimes do research at the Colorado College campus. It’s a private college but they let members of the community use the library. The campus is so beautiful and peaceful and the students seem preternaturally chill. I love the library but immediately feel out of place here. You can viscerally feel the wealth required to attend, the huge endowment fund is like an invisible dome that separates the place from the rest of the world.

I posted a job online and got the first five proposals with lengthy cover letters in about 3 minutes. The cover letters all in the same super upbeat, hyper-confident, tech-keyword-packed writing style that was instantly recognizable as ChatGPT. The screening questions answered almost identically. And plenty of emojis! All full of ✨ and ⚡️ and 🚀.
All went straight into the trash of course. I feel bad for people who think this AI bullshit is helping them.

I think that’s exactly the variety.
I have noticed that our animals are (not surprisingly) very careful to avoid plants toxic to them, of which we have a few in the area. I suspect they are mainly a problem when animals are desperate for food and can’t find enough good stuff.

We have to work at both problems, Gerry. I agree that the most urgent is for the industrialized North to stop producing crap we don’t need and to respect the boundaries that make our life in the planet possible.
I just don’t believe we can do that without keeping fossil fuels in the ground. And we will need some non-combustible energy to do that.
Do you think degrowth without some renewable energy is possible?

I really like Gerry, who is a degrowth advocate like myself and we mostly agree. We badly need to cut consumption in the industrialized world and we are doing the opposite.
Still, this is an example of a case where some of the factoids he publishes are oil and gas industry propaganda: things that were once true but are no longer. Or things that are dramatically worse when you’re mining/shipping/burning oil, gas and coal all over. Once made a solar panel generates for *25 yrs.*

I love this field so much. I would paint it if I could. Humans never set foot here as far as I can tell, even though it’s right next door to us. It’s beloved of the deer, elk and wild turkeys, perhaps in part for the benign neglect.

When mom moved into the nursing home I inherited things that she inherited when her parents died and some that *they* had likewise inherited from *their* parents. Sentimental stuff only: diaries and photos dating back 110 years, the rest all sold or given away long ago.
We don’t have kids, and no one else has reason to care about these old photos. So there will come a day when someone throws these old objects in the trash. When my memory of these people fades and dies.
But maybe not today.

Someone is finally calling attention to the fact that the pollution regulations that Trump's flunkies are eliminating were actually crafted to give industry certainty about how much pollution they could emit and to limit the public's ability to sue for damages under common law. So ICE raided a construction site in our neighborhood and two of the workers tried to get away. They got in their truck, hit one of the ICE vehicles and drove off. The ICE officers *opened fire* on them. They abandoned their vehicle in the neighborhood to try to escape on foot. So now we’re all ordered to “shelter in place” and “stay away from windows” so the swarming gestapo can shoot up the place with a free hand.

She works for days on a large piece, which I notice gives her a sense of accomplishment, and movement as well as transporting her imagination out of the boundaries of her room.
When I go to visit we spend a lot of time looking through here latest work and figuring out where to put it up on the walls and doors of her room. So it’s much more of a sharing thing than the journal was.

Mom is almost 87 years old and for the first time since she was a teen is finding she can no longer keep a journal. She didn’t say anything about it for a long time but when she finally told me she started crying.
But we recently hit on something that has filled the missing piece in her day: adult coloring books. She loves coloring with her huge collection of many-colored pencils. And there are some really nice books out there these days.

What do folks do who depend for their living on being highly creative, more or less on a schedule (artistically, scientifically, or pragmatically, like solving unsolved problems)?
I feel like I’m learning a few things about this. How to listen in my body patiently when uncertain. When to take a long walk. How to befriend the inner critic, make it an ally. The importance of sleep. And not clinging to results.
I may just need to get more peace with financial ruin, if it comes to that, being ok.

This year we’ve seen Mariposa lilies. They don’t always bloom but they grow from bulbs that can live for over 30 years. Hard to grow in a garden, I’m told.
The bulbs were once a staple in the diet of many indigenous people in this part of North America. #bloomscrolling

It’s clear that the pace of technical innovation has been slowing for decades. Compare how people’s lives changed 1900-1960 to the period from 1960 to now. It’s obvious. And contrary to extropian hype, “AI” is slamming the brakes on innovation. It’s an incredibly conservative, backward-looking, purely extractive technology that is already choking on its own excrement. Look at SpaceX which has trouble with engineering tasks we performed perfectly in the 60s on a tiny fraction of the resources.

We have a friend that’s an #immigration attorney in #LA and she’s losing her shit. Her work with clients is being used to kidnap them. They’re grabbed if they appear for a hearing, regardless of the judge’s ruling. And even if with her help they were adjudicated to live and work in the US decades ago, the record of that fact is used by ICE to kidnap them. So her phone is ringing off the hook *and* all the tear-gassing and gunplay and kidnapping is occurring at her place of work.
