What remains to be seen is whether this is a photo op] knowing there is no business case for project to go ahead or whether he really intends to build this. Increasing dependence on oil exports to USA is bad. (even if Oil weren't destroying the planet).

@nprofile…wuyc I know that being from Port Alberni, you are slightly in favour of Coulson BUT: A 737 flies way too fast to be able to do precise dumps and when the water hits the air at that speed, much more evaporates before falling on ground.
I have no idea why the total amount is so high and wonder if it includes operations and mantenance over a number or years. If only for the planes being delivered to Sask, then it is pretty pricy.
During COVID, FlyBe, the largest operator of Dash-8-400s went belly up and that put about 30 or more of the planes on the market. de Havilland Canada has service to take used Dash-8s and bring them back to "new". And itis possible this is what is happening here. Get cheap used Dash-8s and bring them to new and then convert to tankers.
Still not as good as the CL515 from de-Havilland thoughs since it is purpose built to fight fires and extremely manoeuverable for targetted drops.

Shipping disruptions. Whole bunch of containers fell off the Mississipi ship at the port of Long Beach California.
They have corralled the floating containers to one area to not impede other ships going in/out. Bunch of containers aslo leaned out on port side against the shjore crave which can't move anymopre to remove any containers. And since NTSB will be investigating, it will be a while befoore that dock is freed and will cause delays in shipping.

The 2004 documentary "The Day After Tomorrow" foresaw that melting ice would affect ocean currents and change climate. Though their prediction of an abandonned russian cargo vessel ending up in front of the New York library was a *triny little bit* exagerated, it shows there was already knowledge of the issue more than 20 years ago.
You know when a spinning skater brings her arms in, she speeds her rotation? The reverse happens when you take mass near centre or rotation and extend it outwards.
Ice at northern latitudes or Antarctica spin much closer to the axis of rotation that passes through the poles. When it melts and enters the gulf stream to circulate all the way down to equator before coming back up, there is energy it doesn't have and will result in the planet slowing its average rotation speed. Eventually, they will need to change the geosynchronous altitude for satellites to precisely remain over the same spot.

@nprofile…lwd2 @nprofile…wuyc When Air Canada was privatized, it came with many government conditions and obligations. For instance, HQ must remain in Québec unless Québec separates. AC had to have maintenance facility in MB and when it closed it, ended up in court with government suggesting a solution: order C-Series and Bombardier will re-open the maintenance base in Winnipeg to maintain AC's C-Series aircraft (have no ideau what happened to it). (AC has no intention to buying the aircraft before as they were of Embraer religion).
They were allowed to be dominant player in Canada (Canadian Govt didn't bail out Canadian, they allowed AC to buy it), comes with conditions but also the advantage of knowing that shutting down has huge repercussions on the country as a whole and thus instant government intervention.
If abritrator sided with FAs, it would teach AC management that you can't expect govermment "help" whenever you have union problems.

But in airline industry, because union-required seniority clauses, if you have 20 years with airline 1 and dislike their contract and decide to go work for airline 2, you start with 0 years seniority and get the leftovers when it comes to choose the flights with good working hours.
Airlines know their FAs and pilots are enslaved due to seniority clauses so have far less incentive to compete on offering better salary/conditiosn to attract talent. Unions know that the seniority their insist upon is to their own benefit since strikes are the only way employees can get any improvement in pay/working conditions.

Seems to me like Wesley Creek would be more in danger of cutting you off from su0plies and your only evacuation route.
Of BC feries brought one of their ships to Port Alberti, would there be anywhere for it to dock and load cars to evacuate? or would you, Ucluelet and Tofino be isolated and unable to leave ?

During its short stint under VIA management starting in 1978 the train was wildly succesfull and VIA had to replace the couple of RDCs with full fledged train with 2 locos and about 9 trans continental coaches and baggage car for all cyclists and some canoes/kayaks. In 1981, the government decided it had to be cut despite its success. CP kept tracks till about 1989 and ran a couple of freights on it.

@nprofile…wuyc Trump was perfectly willing to handover nuclear planst to Russia until he got a phone call/bribe from Westinghouse who told him they had a huge contract to upgrade some plants (including Zaporizhzhia ) and furning enriched uranium, and all of a sudden Trump realised he couldn't give away the nuclear plants to Russia anymore.
But by offering Russia huge amount of territory before talks begin, Trump is acting as promoter of Russian interests. Reember that Trump 1.0 fired the knowledgeable people about Ukraine at the request of corrupt Russians who profited in Ukraine and even got the ambassador who had been very good as fighting corruption to be fired.
As a good Ferengi, Trump cares only about business and is likely agnostic on outcome but will promote an outcome that benefits him personally the most. Zelensky needs to copy Tim Apple and bribe Trump with a gold bar and some glass sculpture.

@nprofile…wuyc from an environmental point of view, you should ask city of it is ok to empty « pool » into sewer. Adds to demand at water filtration plant. Some cities have separate systems for sewer and rain water. During big rainstorm, rainwater system can be allowed to overflow into river/lake without too much damage. When they are combined it is raw sewage that overflows into river. Water absorbed by ground is the preferred solution. (Obviously your small amounts are not a problem but it is question of principle.) In Las Vegas , it is opposite. They want as much water back into sewer system so it can be dumped back into Lake Mead after treatment which gives city credits to draw more water from Lake Mead.

Burroughs Wellcome is now part of Glaxo Smith Kline.
Ciba Geigy and Sandoz merged in 1992 to create Novartis and the list goes on. Fewer players means fewer facilities mesage less R&D opporunities. And most of the players are european where their main R&D is located. Johnson& Johnson & Merck are the big US players left.

Merck downsized it’s Kirkland QC plant with huge R&D down to sales office. So it isn’t that easy to bring back R&D capability. But yes there is an opportunity but not obvious as US pharma enjoy their current paradise with easily bribed government and European pharma already have their r&D in eurooe.

For instance, one woman claimed to have had rough sex with him in a certain car, but Gomeshi didn't get that car until well after that claim.
Even Gomeshi admitted he gave rough sex, but argued the women consented.
(Gomeshi hired Marie Henein as lawyer who proved to be quite the pitbull who succesfully attacked the female accusers and got him off the hook. )

@nprofile…wuyc Fun fact: North of Squamish, the BC Rail line crosses the Chekamus river on a curved bridge in an uphill section. After CN bought the line and promptly let go of BC Rail experienced folks, it found itself with a disaster: one of its long heavy trains derailed over the bridge, dumping tankers full of nasty chemicals in river.
Locos were all up ahead and pulling very hard to accelerate train and climb hill. Pulled so hard that the cars "slid" out of the curved tracks to try make a straight line (falling in river). BC Rail knew it needed locos in middle and not to have such long trains. And back when there was pax service, the Budd RDCs each had traction, so no such problems accelerating in that curve.

But the then government privatized it, and ever since, everyone of its moves has received huge amount of scrutiny because the penny pinchers at BC Ferries are in charge and service has degraded. So when penny pinchers order ship from abroad instead of built locally, it makes news because if it had been govt enterprise, it would have likely ordered locally made ships.

Marine Atlantic used to be CN and then moved to its own crown corp and severely downsized itself keep]ing only he Newfoundand routes. It didn't order any of the ships it operates, it leased or purchased already built vessels from Stena and in one case Tailling from Estonia. So selection of builder is not a political issue.

Canada has had presence at Mauna Kea across the road from Mauna Loa. Mauna Kea hosts a number of telescopes at its very top. Mauna Loa is not developped.
Mauna Loa is stll active and last erupted in 2022, flooding he road access to the observatory the only facility on mountain.

The new software not only hides posts frm people on local instance that we follow but also has removed essential buttons where you have a small "app sized" browser window.
Apparently the "+" is the "post" button, and you have to use the menu to get to all the stuff. On a larger screen the menu is displayed on right of screen so not as unusable.
I really hate it when developpers all assume we have huge screens devited to scial media and never test usablility for what we actually need.

@nprofile…wuyc Normally, it is the job of the Congress to keep the President in check. (passing laws or even impeach). Congress no longer exists. And elected lawmakers have no standing in the courts to challenge a Trump Exec Order or even Truth Social post that orders government to do stuff.
Court can just say "Congress has power to stop him, yet Congress has democratically chosen to not block him, you, individual Democrat have no standing to challenge".

As is the case with USA system, the losing party is without a leader until next election. Pelosi was good with process at Congress. Also makes it impossible for Telus customer to choose a cheaper package since they have to "switch carrier" to get a Public Mobile price with fees for new SIM etc.

Public Mobile was an old CDMA carrier so when Telus bought its remains, it migrated customers to the bell/Telus gsm network instead of merging the networks as Rogers did when it bought fido.

Both can claim they have their own facilities in province X when comes time to bid for spectrum in that province. But to users, every tower broadcasts both bell and Telus services so you see great big coverage for either. Towers broadcast both Bell and Telus services so when relying on a bell tower , you still use Telus network instead of roaming on Bell

I am curious on whether time at dock will be sufficient to recharge the ferry between crossings, or whether it will only get a full charge overnight which will allow morning crossings on battery and will then need the diesel. Still better than diesel all he time. Usually when one hears "hybrid" it means i runs on diesel almost all the time, and electric is just temporary "assists" when you accelerate.

@nprofile…wuyc Ships with electric engines are nothing new, they have been in use for long time, especially with rotating azipods that provide propulsion in any direction (gret for docking and undocking).
Unless they have architected room for batteries for an all electric design, that ship is never going o be all electric. Storing huge amounts of batteries requires a lot of architecure because if just one battery catches fire, it is sayonara.

@nprofile…wuyc diesel-electric doesn't really save any CO2. The only difference is that while docked, the diesel engine can charge batteries that are used as a boost on departure (so diesel need not rev up to 100% on departure).

In recent years, VIA had text next to the timetable indicating which stations were "on request" and specified that you needed to have a reservation to board or get off train at that station at least 30 minutes prior to scheduled train arrival. (aka train engineers given instruction by radio on wether to stop or no). Such text has disapeared from VIA,s web site since it is now a luury cruise company, not a railway linking Canada's rural areas.

@nprofile…wuyc One has to be careful with such language. Preston Manning and Calgary Mayor Ralph Klein had much rethoric about "Let Québec separate, good riddance". And such rethoric really fueled separatism in Québec since anglophones made us feel very unwelcome in Rest Of Canada.
So much so that the federal government in 1995 organised a huge rally to bring "Rest of Canada" people to Montréal to show their love for Québec for a referendum they were about to lose. They won with only 50.58% of votes.

One group used SCL/Cambridge Analytica for advertising/social media. This was a British firm. The other group used AIQ which was a small firm out of Vancouver Island. What this a criminal judge or immigration judge? Was the guy there for a asylum claim hearing or because of a crime? or did he seek protection of judge because pursued by ICE?
If you make asylum claim, you are not undocuented as you await a judge to decide if refugee or not.
But if you entered illegally and did not claim asylum, then yeah, undocumented.

So Lindt using present tense for « stockpiling » means they are paying import tariffs for the us stocks they bring in.
