#Today Happy Spring Everyone! We are evidently skipping it altogether down here in the SoCal desert & are in the middle of our first heat wave of the year. I expect many flowers to be popping over the next couple of weeks. My lime tree has a plethora of blossoms & my orange tree is already past that & starting on a new crop of fruit which looks like quite a bit more than last year. 😀 Just got Book I of my latest WIP back from my editor yesterday so I will be mostly offline, lost in my own world.

Who is your most despicable character and how do you feel about them?
Kumalin is an ancient wind mage who has lived so long he's not really humanoid at this point. He has no redeeming qualities. I love him, cause he's fun to write. I have very few complete villains in my work so I take full advantage of him.
On the other hand, there is Eithelwaithe, his first consort, who might be worse than him. She gives me the creeps. She's like a living night terror.

While editing, what most clearly signals a pacing issue?
If I find myself getting bored because the chapter seems to drag. This is usually too much dialogue or narrative passages which need to be revised, moved, or deleted. I seem to have more of a problem with too slow than too fast, although I occasionally will need to add something.

I have this truly ambitious project this year of starting my own blog to serialize my next book. Never did anything like this before, but new challenges are always fun. The dream would be for everything to work as intended without disasters and to gain a decent-sized readership. And, oh, sell more books, gotta include that. A LOT more books, since I'm dreaming.

In most of the states I've lived in I was able to vote in the Dem primary as an independent. There was one state that didn't allow that. This was years ago, so I can't recall which one (I've moved around a lot 😆) That year, like you, I really wanted to vote in the primary, so joined to do that. Afterward I got SO many Dem fund raising emails I switched back quickly.

Someone in Portland showed up to an ICE protest in an inflatable frog suit. Made them look ridiculous. They sprayed tear gas in his air vent, but the frogs kept multiplying. Guy went viral, went from a local hero to national.

Really angry to learn #today that one of my lovely creative friends deleted her account because of harassment. This isn't the first time I've heard of this happening here. Seems like the normal social media "tools" we use to combat this problem don't work as well in the fediverse. I hope we can figure out how to do better for all users, otherwise we need to drop the smugness about being "best."

Maggie? Absolutely. She does plenty of antagonistic stuff.
Actually, most of my MCs have done questionable things. None of them are perfect. They have their bad days. In fact, for most of my "heroes," in general, you will find some regular people who disapprove of them. Plenty of their "heroic" actions have had a cost & plenty of them have made blunders.

On a scale from 1 to 10, how safe is your world?
Hmm. How safe is any world, really? I'd give my own world like a 4, maybe. Ardonna might be a 6. There are many things/beings that could kill you but also some relatively safe places where one's fellow citizens (humanoid or otherwise) prefer to get along & the climate is agreeable. You also have more recourse to bargain with most species.

How many POV characters does your story have?
Mine have a single, 1st-person POV character. I like to dive deep into my MC's head. As a reader, the more POVs a book has the less I usually like it. I DNF'd one book when a new POV showed up in book 7. Yet some of my favorites have multiples. 🤷
My books are all in a single series telling their aspect of one world story, so could be considered a divided multiple POV 😆 work. Books can show the same events from different views.

Creativity is okay, although I'm fighting through a low mood right now. My mom passed last week after sitting in a nursing home with Alzheimer's for the last couple of years. I hated to see her like that--it was definitely past time for her, & she is well out of the current hell hole this country is in which might have led to her losing care--but it's still processing in the recesses of my head.

Does the society your characters live in take good care of people with disabilities?
Like most things in Ardonna, it depends on timeline & location. Any human society would care for them with the knowledge & ability of the day. So less well in the Dragon Age, better in the Modern Era. You don't find many truly disabled folks in mage societies due to the re-emergence ceremony and, you know, magery.

It seems like different people have different expectations for it. Some are looking for critique, so craft-related input. Others just like to chat, commiserate. I tend to use the community hashtag most often for specific questions, usually publishing or marketing related.
I strike up more convos through the hashtag games if someone posts something I can relate to.
I'm an extreme introvert & Mastodon is the first place I've felt comfortable putting myself out.

I feel like all of us who want better have to become more "militantly kind." That is favor helping people rather than enriching billionaires. Take whatever meager resources we have and channel it away from anyone who is not helping to those who are. This is me typing off the top of my head this morning, with no idea of the logistics involved, but it's something I personally aspire to do more of, any way I can.

I think the election result had an effect on most of us writers on here. I actually returned to my editing project with a vengeance after a couple of days, revising certain dialogues to make more of a point. The rage has to come out somewhere, I guess. 🤷

Interesting question! I suppose our present states (internal or external) would exert a large influence over our creativity, like a twisted muse.

#Today I woke up in Tucson, AZ, in the wonderful Downtown Clifton Hotel, where I stay whenever we come through. I used to live here, years ago (undergrad at U of A) & it's always nice to see it again & the gorgeous saguaros. 🌵 Day 1 of the road trip went well, once we figured out the rental car's AC problem. Day 2 will take us through NM & part of TX. Hope everyone is having a good week. Off in search of coffee now.

They want to take us back to the Dark Ages and then will whine about how Americans are no longer competitive in the world market once they've trashed education and we no longer have skilled workers. And don't even get me started on their opinions of women 🤬 According to Vance, I have no other purpose than to care for my grandchildren, but they live in another state so I guess I am useless. Those people are like B movie villains, it boggles the mind they exist in real life
