Happy You Day!!! 🥳
I love this from you website: Writing is a disease. There is no known cure.
I'm curious why you gave up being a lawyer (well, not *why* exactly--I wouldn't want to be one either.) What about it pushed you over the edge?
And what about writing and publishing do you find most fulfilling?

Does the change of seasons affect your writing at all? If so, how?
We don't get seasons here in the classic sense. Some months are cooler, wetter, or hotter, but I can garden all year long. So, no, my writing isn't impacted.

Do birds feature in your work?
😆 Do they ever.
I've got characters who speak to birds, characters who shift into birds, characters who do both, and bird characters. Of the real birds, some are familiar but many are native only to Ardonna.
My Midnight Crow book has a bird shifter MC.

#Today Happy Spring Everyone! We are evidently skipping it altogether down here in the SoCal desert & are in the middle of our first heat wave of the year. I expect many flowers to be popping over the next couple of weeks. My lime tree has a plethora of blossoms & my orange tree is already past that & starting on a new crop of fruit which looks like quite a bit more than last year. 😀 Just got Book I of my latest WIP back from my editor yesterday so I will be mostly offline, lost in my own world.

One of my all time favorites. Although I've mostly read her diaries rather than her fiction, they truly inspired me. She was also a pioneer self-published author back in the 1930s 😋

Who is your most despicable character and how do you feel about them?
Kumalin is an ancient wind mage who has lived so long he's not really humanoid at this point. He has no redeeming qualities. I love him, cause he's fun to write. I have very few complete villains in my work so I take full advantage of him.
On the other hand, there is Eithelwaithe, his first consort, who might be worse than him. She gives me the creeps. She's like a living night terror.

While editing, what most clearly signals a pacing issue?
If I find myself getting bored because the chapter seems to drag. This is usually too much dialogue or narrative passages which need to be revised, moved, or deleted. I seem to have more of a problem with too slow than too fast, although I occasionally will need to add something.

2026-01-02 14:51:33 UTC

#ScribesAndMakers Jan 2 Vivid?
I gazed down at a shaggy sea, shades of green waving as we zipped over. Did we have so many shades on Earth? Or were colors just more vivid here, holding their winsome secrets?

#WordWeavers 1
What are your wildest (writing-related) dreams for this year?
I have this truly ambitious project this year of starting my own blog to serialize my next book. Never did anything like this before, but new challenges are always fun. The dream would be for everything to work as intended without disasters and to gain a decent-sized readership. And, oh, sell more books, gotta include that. A LOT more books, since I'm dreaming.

#WordWeavers Dec 23
What's the first and last line of dialogue for your MC?
Current WIP not finished yet so I'll just use the last line I wrote.
First: "Where is that damn light coming from?”
Last: “Once y’all get back to Sharren City, keep an ear out for any weird cult following or assassination attempts.”

In most of the states I've lived in I was able to vote in the Dem primary as an independent. There was one state that didn't allow that. This was years ago, so I can't recall which one (I've moved around a lot 😆) That year, like you, I really wanted to vote in the primary, so joined to do that. Afterward I got SO many Dem fund raising emails I switched back quickly.

Really angry to learn #today that one of my lovely creative friends deleted her account because of harassment. This isn't the first time I've heard of this happening here. Seems like the normal social media "tools" we use to combat this problem don't work as well in the fediverse. The UK Lake District. It's one of my favorite places & I think they'd be something for everyone. Lovely nature views. Hiking. People who prefer not to be out in the wild can relax in historic taverns or tour stately homes and gardens.

Could you imagine a story in the same world where your MC is the antagonist?
Maggie? Absolutely. She does plenty of antagonistic stuff.
Actually, most of my MCs have done questionable things. None of them are perfect. They have their bad days. In fact, for most of my "heroes," in general, you will find some regular people who disapprove of them. Plenty of their "heroic" actions have had a cost & plenty of them have made blunders.

On a scale from 1 to 10, how safe is your world?
Hmm. How safe is any world, really? I'd give my own world like a 4, maybe. Ardonna might be a 6. There are many things/beings that could kill you but also some relatively safe places where one's fellow citizens (humanoid or otherwise) prefer to get along & the climate is agreeable. You also have more recourse to bargain with most species.

2025-08-12 12:01:28 UTC

#WordWeavers Aug 12
On a scale from 1 to 10, how comfortable is your MC's life?
Maggie's comfort level changes and varies throughout the book. It would be hard to assign a number to it. She starts out at a 1 for sure, and rises from there, with some dips.

How many POV characters does your story have?
Mine have a single, 1st-person POV character. I like to dive deep into my MC's head. As a reader, the more POVs a book has the less I usually like it. I DNF'd one book when a new POV showed up in book 7. Yet some of my favorites have multiples. 🤷
My books are all in a single series telling their aspect of one world story, so could be considered a divided multiple POV 😆 work. Books can show the same events from different views.

Creativity is okay, although I'm fighting through a low mood right now. My mom passed last week after sitting in a nursing home with Alzheimer's for the last couple of years. I hated to see her like that--it was definitely past time for her, & she is well out of the current hell hole this country is in which might have led to her losing care--but it's still processing in the recesses of my head.

Does the society your characters live in take good care of people with disabilities?
Like most things in Ardonna, it depends on timeline & location. Any human society would care for them with the knowledge & ability of the day. So less well in the Dragon Age, better in the Modern Era. You don't find many truly disabled folks in mage societies due to the re-emergence ceremony and, you know, magery.

I read somewhere the gov was claiming the portals would be back up soon, so maybe that was true, they were down and now up?

I've heard people collect free books & may not read them for a while. Some people will only get free books & never pay. I assume there are a small subset where this marketing tactic will work as intended.

How do your MCs feel about the ocean?
The one thing they have in common is feeling intimidated by it.
“They’re water mages.” Jadenalia glanced nervously toward the ocean.
It bucked and rose.
“Shit!” I grabbed her arm. “Let’s go!”
But the mages kept pace, and the sea kept rising. A vertical wall of water rolled toward us.

It seems like different people have different expectations for it. Some are looking for critique, so craft-related input. Others just like to chat, commiserate. I tend to use the community hashtag most often for specific questions, usually publishing or marketing related.
I strike up more convos through the hashtag games if someone posts something I can relate to.
I'm an extreme introvert & Mastodon is the first place I've felt comfortable putting myself out.

This is why I love sites like Liminal Fiction which allows you to choose a host of tags. I put a bunch of "keywords" in my bio here so readers can decide if my work might suit them.

#Today Fury's Gift is off to my editor for its critique. So excited to get her thoughts as this might be my favorite story yet. Although I might say that about every current work 🤔 Still, this one had such fun twists and turns. 🤗

"Persist" is a good word for those of us in the US. I was thinking "survive" which would feel like a triumph under the current circumstances, but I suppose that is a bit bleak. I should aim higher than just squeaking through.

I feel like all of us who want better have to become more "militantly kind." That is favor helping people rather than enriching billionaires. Take whatever meager resources we have and channel it away from anyone who is not helping to those who are. This is me typing off the top of my head this morning, with no idea of the logistics involved, but it's something I personally aspire to do more of, any way I can.

I think the election result had an effect on most of us writers on here. I actually returned to my editing project with a vengeance after a couple of days, revising certain dialogues to make more of a point. The rage has to come out somewhere, I guess. 🤷

Interesting question! I suppose our present states (internal or external) would exert a large influence over our creativity, like a twisted muse.
Hope you feel better soon! (but don't drop the new project because 'weird' is interesting)

#Today I woke up in Tucson, AZ, in the wonderful Downtown Clifton Hotel, where I stay whenever we come through. I used to live here, years ago (undergrad at U of A) & it's always nice to see it again & the gorgeous saguaros. 🌵 Day 1 of the road trip went well, once we figured out the rental car's AC problem. Day 2 will take us through NM & part of TX. Hope everyone is having a good week. Off in search of coffee now.

Long shot but curious if this could work:
Looking for a reliable person to water outside plants & collect mail for a week in the #PalmSprings or #DesertHotSprings area. We will, of course, pay them for their time.
Please boost. I rarely see people from my part of the world on here, but you never know. Thanks!

If you could collaborate with another author, who would it be?
No idea. But it would definitely be a fellow indie author & not someone tied to the status quo of the trad industry. Someone whose brain was as odd & fanciful as mine, but in a different fashion, so we'd compliment each other. And maybe someone better at marketing 🤣

I was wondering too. We got some sort of tax credit when we bought our house, but we had to pay it back when we sold it.
