Amber light, fat cells, and nature
Researchers took human fat cells and shined different colors of light on them.. violet, blue, green, yellow, amber (nanometers), and red
Only one wavelength consistently did something dramatic:
Amber light made fat cells break down their stored fat droplets. This wasn’t done by the normal fat burning hormone pathway, but by turning on the cells cleanup and recycling machinery
Autophagy + lysosomes = internal fat digestion. Autophagy being the cell’s self-cleaning process, and lysosomes being acidic sacs that digest waste
The cell essentially ate its own fat droplets from the inside out as a result of amber light exposure
This pathway is not the classic adrenaline to HSL to fat breakdown route
The researchers even blocked the usual lipase pathways, and the amber light effect still happened
So, the study tells us that amber light activates the cell’s recycling machinery that destroys fat droplets

Blue light is highly stimulating and alerting. Red and infrared boosts mitochondrial ATP. UV-A and UV-B offer distinct benefits
Amber sits in an interesting middle zone because it penetrates deeper than blue, carries more energy than red, and interacts with metabolic tissue like fat
Amber is also heavily involved in:
• cerebellar development
• circadian signaling
• mitochondrial dynamics
• melanin intermediates
• POMC related pathways
Fat cells responding to amber light fits the pattern of amber being a metabolic wavelength
Amber exists in the natural world for your benefit. It’s most abundant during sunrise and sunset due to Rayleigh Scattering, where you have a high concentration of red/infrared/oranges/yellow/ambers

Daylight savings time is ass on every level. Nature doesn’t observe it. The sun still rises and sets on its own schedule. When someone claims that a tan is a sign of skin or DNA damage, remind them that this entire narrative has its roots in eugenics and scientific racism, not objective circadian biology
The early dermatology and photobiology frameworks that demonized tanning were developed during an era when darker skin tones were pathologized, not understood
“Sun damage” became a term that conveniently upheld the pseudoscientific belief that pale skin was biologically superior, a view promoted by eugenicists who associated light skin with purity and intelligence
So, when they parrot the idea that melanin production equals damage, ask them why they’re defending a framework built on racist pseudoscience rather than updated circadian photobiology
Melanin is NOT a damage response
It’s an adaptive and photoprotective system that presents the following benefits:
1. Powerful antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals and maintains redox balance

Vitamin D3 isn’t the only hormone with dozens of metabolites, endogenous melatonin also has more than a dozen identified metabolites
Counting both enzymatic and non-enzymatic pathways, researchers have cataloged at least 10-15 distinct melatonin metabolites, and the list keeps growing as metabolomics improves
Just like Vitamin D, we’re talking about a complex network with storage forms, active forms, and downstream derivatives that have a powerful impact on systemic health, especially mitochondrial function and immunity
Melatonin metabolism operates on two parallel levels:
1. Sub-cellular/local form (inside mitochondria, cells, and tissues)
2. Systemic/circulatory (pineal secretion into the bloodstream, measurable in urine or plasma)
The first is made by NIR light outside during the day, while the second is made from nighttime darkness
Melatonin is a master circadian hormone that is married to the light and dark cycle, meaning circadian alignment fosters both forms while circadian disruption destroys them

Circadian eyesight regeneration isn’t some fringe idea, it was the norm for our ancestors
Long before screens, sunglasses, and artificial light, human vision was constantly bathed in the sun’s full spectrum from sunrise to sunset
The daily dance between light during the day and darkness at night trained, nourished, and regenerated the visual system
Our eyes evolved in lockstep with the sun, not under fluorescents or LEDs

Modern medicine is broken
You can preach about how great it is for acute care, and I’ll agree, but that’s a distraction from the real issue
People like me who’ve experienced iatrogenic harm don’t care about excuses. We’ve been burned, directly or indirectly, by the very system meant to heal
As an example, the system itself, a medical bureaucracy, inflicted harm by penalizing my midwife who acted in my family’s best interest during an emergency. That’s institutional iatrogenesis
Heavy is the head that wears the crown, so take it on the chin, not up the ass
Knowing what iatrogenesis means ≠ reflecting on your role in perpetuating it. Every pilot understands gravity, that doesn’t mean crashes aren’t caused by bad training or broken systems
Complexity doesn’t excuse negligence or misaligned incentives. It’s one thing to accept risk, while it’s another to normalize harm as inevitable
Patient “self-harm” is often secondary to a system that fails to educate, empower, or create health literate citizens. The culture conditions dependency, then blames the dependent. Sounds like an abusive and alcoholic parent
“Don’t confuse your Google search with my medical degree” is the type of arrogance I’m talking about
When the entire model rewards treatment over prevention, blaming the patient for acting “autogenically” is hypocrisy
Yes, doctors may be more ethical than pharma execs or insurers, but that’s like saying the captain’s the most sober man on a sinking ship
Ethics are relative within the system, and that doesn’t absolve the profession’s complicity in the machine
I’ve seen more people heal from sunrise, movement, and truth than from any prescription written under fluorescent lights
Modern medicine doesn’t own health, but people are waking up, literally and figuratively
If I break my leg, I’m obviously going to the hospital. If I have an acute situation that requires a hospital visit, I’ll have no problem going
That’s what modern medicine should be for. Acute trauma, emergencies, saving lives when seconds matter
But don’t treat me like a fucking idiot who’s incapable of learning, thinking, or discerning truth for myself
Because where I’ll actually find health, where I’ll reverse disease, restore energy, and build resilience will never be inside those walls lit by toxic lighting

In the sun, in the cold, in the rhythms of nature that trained my biology long before medicine tried to manage it

There are many Vitamin D metabolites that differ in water solubility, how long they last, and their ability to be reactivated in tissues when needed
This means your body can store Vitamin D in different forms, keep it circulating longer, and reactivate it on demand, hence Vitamin D status isn’t just about new production, but also how well your system manages and taps into these reserves
Because of this, someone with strong metabolic and circadian rhythms can stay Vitamin D sufficient longer, even with little sun, by cycling and reusing stored forms efficiently
On the flip side, if those pathways are disrupted, your body will likely struggle to access or convert those stored metabolites, leading to deficiency even if you technically have plenty in the bank
Skin type absolutely matters, but mainly upstream, at the level of how much Vitamin D you can make and store in the first place, not so much in the downstream recycling
Darker skin makes Vitamin D more slowly because higher eumelanin blocks UV-B more effectively, but once D3 is produced and metabolized, the sulfation, storage, and recycling pathways work similarly
Lighter skin can build up stores faster with less UV-B exposure, but if circadian rhythms or metabolic health are poor, they can burn through or fail to mobilize those stores just as easily
This is such a game changing and refreshing narrative involving Vitamin D3 acquisition and storage

Most melanomas occur on body parts that rarely see the sun
This alone should make you pause. If full spectrum sunlight were the primary culprit, you’d expect the highest melanoma rates on chronically sun exposed areas like the face, neck, and forearms
Instead, melanomas overwhelmingly appear on the trunk, thighs, and other typically covered areas

Here’s where mechanisms meet the real world results, and I love to see it because my most recent Substack article explains much of the why behind this
Most think it’s impossible for Vitamin D levels to rise through a cold, “sun and UV poor” Canadian winter despite no supplementation
1. Mobilization of fat stores during cold exposure. 25(OH)D is fat-soluble and stored in body fat. Frequent cold exposure increases sympathetic tone, brown adipose tissue activation, and lipolysis, which mobilizes stored lipophilic compounds, including Vitamin D metabolites, into circulation
In winter, you’re not necessarily producing new Vitamin D through skin UV-B exposure, but your body is liberating what you stored during summer, raising serum levels
2. Enhanced sulfation and circulation dynamics in cold
Cold exposure upregulates hepatic sulfotransferase activity and improves peripheral circulation
Sulfated Vitamin D metabolites like 25(OH)D₃-3-sulfate) are more water-dispersible and can act as a circulating reserve pool, re-entering active circulation when lipolysis and transport proteins shift
Likely making more Vitamin D bioavailable or detectable in standard blood tests depending on the assay
3. Seasonal hormonal and binding protein fluctuations
Vitamin D–binding protein and albumin levels are not static, they fluctuate seasonally and under stress. Cold exposure, changes in liver metabolism, and altered circadian photoperiods can shift DBP levels. A lower DBP concentration can increase the proportion of free and bioavailable 25(OH)D, which can raise measured total levels depending on the test
4. Reduced conversion to active metabolites
In colder months, metabolic rates and sun exposure patterns shift. If less 25(OH)D is being converted to 1,25(OH)₂D (the active form), the circulating pool of 25(OH)D might actually RISE because less is being drawn downstream
Think of it like reduced spending during hibernation, the checking account balance creeps up because withdrawals slow down
5. Circadian and photoperiod adaptations
Even without external UV-B, proper light entrainment through getting AM light daily keeps the hepatic-renal axis and hormonal cascades in sync, further supporting efficient recycling and conservation of Vitamin D metabolites
Circadian alignment creates more efficient Vitamin D homeostasis

All this points to some fascinating overlap that most people do not consider
A winter rise in Vitamin D likely reflects a synergy of three processes:
1. Mobilization of stored lipophilic D metabolites through cold-induced lipolysis
2. Enzymatic reconversion of conjugated metabolites into measurable 25(OH)D
3. Endogenous biophoton UV-B photochemistry acting on cholesterol/sulfated precursors, sustaining low level Vitamin D production even in the absence of external UV-B

Let’s start with the basics
Your body evolved to be under the sun’s full light spectrum, which is why every aspect of it is designed to sense and use light
How can I prove this?
Because we have chromophores all over the exterior and interior of our bodies
Chromophores are molecules or parts of molecules responsible for the color of compounds
They are typically the parts of a molecule that absorb visible light or ultraviolet light, leading to electronic transitions
When a chromophore absorbs light, it moves to an excited state, and the energy associated with this transition often falls within the visible spectrum, which is why we perceive color
So, how does this tie into the mitochondria?
Well, each mitochondrion in your body contains a series of complexes which are designed to transfer electrons through redox reactions to produce energy (ATP)
This chain of complexes is what we call the electron transport chain, and it’s found within the inner mitochondrial membrane
Mitochondria are the lifeblood of each cell, hence they make all the difference between health and disease, life and death
It ties in perfectly because of this fact:
The entire electron transport chain is LOADED with chromophores which are critical to the function of these complexes
Now here’s where it gets fun
I told you that your mitochondria are light-sensing organelles

⚡️ Complex I (NADH:Ubiquinone Oxidoreductase)
• Flavin Mononucleotide (FMN): Absorbs light at around 370 nm (UV) and 450 nm (blue light)

Blue light has the ability to shrink adipocytes (fat cells) and make them more efficient at burning fat
But wasn’t this study done using isolated blue light, divorced from full spectrum sunlight?

I will always argue that the results would be way more impressive with full spectrum sunlight because it shows us the full effect, rather than just proof of mechanism
This study narrowed in on 450 - 480 nanometer blue light to show melanopsin/TRPC signaling in fat cells
That’s elegant for mechanistic proof, but it only scratches the surface
In nature, light is never monochromatic. Full spectrum sunlight is polychromatic and carries a dynamic orchestra of wavelengths (UV-A, UV-B, violet, green, red, infrared), all working in layered synergy
What we see in this paper is the bare minimum effect. Blue alone tweaks lipolysis and adipokine signaling
But in the real world, those signals would be amplified, modulated, and stabilized by the rest of the spectrum
Researchers often isolate a single wavelength to prove mechanism, in this case, that subcutaneous white adipocytes (scWAT) have a melanopsin/TRPC mediated light sensitive pathway
By showing that just blue light can trigger measurable currents and metabolic changes (lipolysis, adiponectin/leptin secretion shifts, reduced lipid droplet size), they establish causality
Melanopsin (the blue light sensing opsin found throughout the body) absorbs in this range and directly mediates fat cell signaling
This study shows proof of principle
Your fat cells are literally photoreceptive, they “see” blue light through melanopsin and change metabolic behavior in response
What does this mean from a physiological standpoint?
That under the sun, blue light within the full spectrum helps tune fat metabolism, aligning lipolysis and adipokine signaling with the day’s activity/eating cycle
But, this is a two way street
It also means that isolated blue light at night will distort adipocyte signaling, promoting fat storage, leptin/adiponectin imbalance, and metabolic dysfunction through circadian disruption
If the researchers used full spectrum sunlight (or at least a solar simulator), they likely would have seen:
🌞 Greater lipid mobilization because of red/infrared synergy
🌞 Stronger leptin/adiponectin modulation (hormonal entrainment, not just a stress response)
🌞 Circadian phase reinforcement with UV + blue acting as zeitgebers
🌞 Less oxidative “noise” or stress compared to blue in isolation
Instead of proving that fat cells can sense blue, the paper would have demonstrated that sunlight orchestrates fat metabolism through opsins in fat itself
That’s a paradigm shifting story

I would avoid looking directly at the sun unless you’re sun-gazing during sunrise and sunset. Even then, I think it needs to be done progressively because there’s an adjustment period

If you’re not dedicating time to proper sunbathing with a large portion of your skin exposed, you’re not giving yourself the chance to produce meaningful amounts of vitamin D3 from UV-B exposure
For some reason, many people assume that simply going to a baseball game without sunglasses or a hat, while keeping most of their skin covered with clothes, will somehow generate sufficient vitamin D3
Absolutely not
You need actual skin in the game at the correct times and in circadian alignment
Sunlight must strike bare skin directly, and ideally in a consistent, intentional way. It’s not something you stumble into by accident. It requires a dedicated practice

Great, you’re still not making D3
Making it dark at night?
Great, still not making D3
UV-A rise?
Fantastic, still not making D3
You must be sunbathing with BARE SKIN when UV-B is present to begin the conversion process in your body
Let me remind you of the conversion process involved here:
1. UV-B hits the skin and penetrates into the epidermis (outer most layer of the skin)
2. UV-B changes the shape of the starting molecule known as 7-DHC (7-dehydrocholesterol)
3. This UV-B induced change turns 7-DHC into Pre-Vitamin D3. With heat, pre-vitamin D3 naturally rearranges into Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol)
4. That’s where binding for transport occurs. Vitamin D3 cannot float freely in the blood, so it binds to a carrier called DBP (Vitamin D Binding Protein), forming DBP-VD3
5. Once bound, it moves through the bloodstream where it can later be activated in the liver and kidneys into the full active hormone form (calcitriol)
I have bad news if you use any form of SPF as well, so prepare yourself
SPF 15 blocks ~93% of UV-B
SPF 30 blocks ~97% of UV-B
SPF 50 blocks ~98 of UV-B
SPF 100 blocks ~99% of UV-B
So if you use any form of sunscreen, whether chemical or mineral based, you’re blocking the very light wavelength range needed to produce D3 (also one of your most potent anti-cancer hormones)
Negligible conversion is happening, even if you do a shitty job of applying your sunscreen considering the chronic circadian disruption that a modern lifestyle creates, further worsening D3 status
People who don’t have a strong circadian education are likely to make these simple mistakes
