First seed catalog has come in the mail this afternoon! Seed Savers Exchange! Southern Exposure Seed will show up sometime mid-December. I no longer do business with Rare Seeds as their founding family has supported homophobic and transphobic political candidates in the recent past. Plenty of great alternatives though. Got an email from the company I buy CBD oil from, saying that the proposed budget bill contains language that bans products that contain more than 0.4% #hemp, which would essentially ban 95% hemp CBD products across the country. If you rely on #CBD and/or THC to manage your anxiety, might want to call your Senator and ask them to support Rand Paul’s amendment that removes that language from the bill.

I interact with a lot of landscapers during the day at work and it seems a lot of them are either not very knowledgeable themselves about plants, or aren’t educating their clients about options and limitations. I keep having to explain that a plant doesn’t grow to say five feet and then just stop. Some pruning/trimming will eventually be necessary if you care about limiting the size of a plant.
I always end up referring folks to dwarf conifers like Slowmound mugo pine or something similar if limiting size is a concern.

It’s disconcerting how disconnected from nature so many people are; it’s evident when folks come to the nursery and want plants that fit a very tight, precise template that they have in mind: “It needs to get no bigger than 4 feet, I don’t want to do any pruning.” Or wanting something with a very specific foliage color that’s so far removed from what you’d find in nature. We’ve become to accustomed to suburban landscaping: it’s not just lawns, it’s also the neat rows of tightly trimmed Japanese hollies bookended by narrow, tightly shaved arborvitae. It’s too manicured, too neat, too forced into a cookie cutter.

Drove down to Norfolk today with the hopes of visiting Norfolk Botanical Gardens but the entrance fee was $20, which given some big expenses lately felt steep, so unfortunately I felt compelled to pivot to something else. So I made lemonade out of lemons and enjoyed a nice afternoon at the beach for a few hours.
But it did get me thinking that gardens should be accessible to as many people as possible, regardless of income. I feel like we could find ways to fund gardens so entrance fees aren't necessary.

I've seen a major increase in the number of people wanting to be more food-independent....fruit trees and shrubs are selling like hot cakes at the nursery. People having them tagged practically as they come off the truck. Makes sense though with impending tariffs and inflation. We need to do more though for the #pollinators that give us those fruits....they're still declining from pesticide use and loss of habitat. Yes, plant natives but also attend your local zoning board/planning commission meetings and remind them to keep wildlife in mind when making land use decisions!

Debating whether to order some more fruit trees for this year...the peach tree is still going but the fruit rotted while ripening, two of the apple trees succumbed to some kind of root rot or something. Thinking I might just stick to what's native in my area...blueberries, elderberry, pawpaws. Except the figs seem pretty unbothered by pests or diseases. #gardening #GrowYourOwn

This was spurred in part by legislation signed into law last year that requires nurseries and garden centers to display signage next to plants known to be invasive, warning customers as such. The legislation came about as a result of pressure from conservation groups and the general public. Contacting your legislators works!

Found out yesterday that the nursery I work at is going to stop selling even more invasive plants (discontinued Barberry and Burning Bush last year); next year, no more Mahonia, Nandina domestica, and I'm hoping Miscanthus will also be dropped. Instead we'll be increasing our stock of natives...adding Sourwood this year and native Styrax (Silverbell)

Going to be interesting to see how my fig bushes make it through record cold temperatures this week. The variety I have is called Olympian and originates in the PNW but this kind of cold is unheard of even there, I think (8-10ºF for several nights). Last few years they budded back out from both the crown and previous years' growth

Really disappointed that the Democrats voted against care for trans people in the #NDAA bill. I get that the bill had good things in it, but at a time when trans people are under attack, you don't vote for something that denies them the services and care they need.

I've been reading "Bringing Nature Home" by Doug Tallamy and the early chapters are quite difficult to get through...he minces no words about the alarming rates of habitat loss occurring from unrestrained commercial and residential development, paving of roads/highways and parking lots, and vast expanses of sterile lawn. It got me thinking....we can't rely just on getting the right people elected (as we've just seen this November). It's going to take having conversations with people much closer to us...friends, family, neighbors, co-workers....to affect the most widespread and immediate change we need to see (i.e. "Maybe we don't need to be using Round-Up...there are plants that act as natural repellants, attracting good bugs that eat the bad ones"). But it's also clear we need to connect the dots for people, since so many have the blinders of self-interest on. How will habitat loss affect them, and if not them, then their kids and grandkids?

One of the cooler things I saw while in Idaho was a "grove" of quaking aspens (in really, all these are just one tree, which grew sprouts that became clones of the parent). I had only heard about aspens before, so cool to see them up close! #trees

Update: walking back to the parking garage from the concert last night and I came across several trees with the ground around them completely littered with dead lanternflies. It honestly looked like leaves at first, and then I thought it was mess from fruits that had dropped, and then....oh. Oh no. It was so disgusting. There were also still live lanternflies hanging on the trunks and branches.
I'm really amazed they haven't made their way into the Richmond area, so far the furthest south I've seen them is northern/northwest VA.

Welp...my mom found out I've been painting my nails, and really, really disapproves of it. And implores me to reconsider.

Funny, I don't seem to recall pushback against men wearing face powder and wigs in the 1700s. Nor do I find anywhere in Scripture a prohibition against men painting their nails or wearing earrings, or anything of the sort.
And honestly, more men could stand to be more feminine.
