I've been reading "Bringing Nature Home" by Doug Tallamy and the early chapters are quite difficult to get through...he minces no words about the alarming rates of habitat loss occurring from unrestrained commercial and residential development, paving of roads/highways and parking lots, and vast expanses of sterile lawn. It got me thinking....we can't rely just on getting the right people elected (as we've just seen this November). It's going to take having conversations with people much closer to us...friends, family, neighbors, co-workers....to affect the most widespread and immediate change we need to see (i.e. "Maybe we don't need to be using Round-Up...there are plants that act as natural repellants, attracting good bugs that eat the bad ones"). But it's also clear we need to connect the dots for people, since so many have the blinders of self-interest on. How will habitat loss affect them, and if not them, then their kids and grandkids?
