Over the last decade and half I have met many pastors and teachers who use the “umbrella of authority” model from Gothard with no idea of the original source. And on the surface it does have some resemblance to the historical Christian understanding of authority, so it is certainly an understandable mistake to make.
But given that the umbrella model was originated by a heretical teacher, it’s probably better not to use it instead of trying to reframe the historical Christian doctrine on top of Gothard’s model.

Two key points:
Keeping your painting of Christ as shepherd is totally consistent with early Christian practice. Just don’t venerate it, treat it as educational.
I jumped in with the original thread here because I was concerned about you equating a painting of Christ with an idol, which it absolutely is not.

This post is in response to Laser, who just nuked his account and started a new one that I have yet to find.
As a former reformed Baptist myself, I can deeply appreciate the consistency and conviction with which you are approaching this.
If Calvin’s position on icons is correct, then you are doing the right thing. However, Calvin is objectively and provably not correct.
Ultimately the Holy Fathers of the 7th ecumenical council were articulating the faith “once delivered to the saints” when they ruled for the veneration of icons. The basic idea that “veneration of the image passes to the prototype” is a key lynchpin of both trinitarian theology and Christian ethics.
That concept underlines how the commandment to love God and love neighbor are not in conflict. We show our love for God by honoring each image of God around us.
St. John says:
“If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?” (1 John 4:20)
The underlying logic that St. John uses is the theology of the icon: by loving the image (ikon) we see, we honor the unseen one who is imaged.
In other words, “what you have done to the least of these, you have done to me” as Christ says. The action or honor given to the ikon (the human being made in the image of God) passes to the prototype: Christ.
Without this concept, all Christian ethics and morality fails.

By all means, don’t go against conscience.
I had to do a little research, but it seems fairly clear to me that totem poles actually function more like iconography than like idols. They don’t seem to “embody” the god/spirit the way an idol does, but they can refer to them pictorially.
But that said, I can clearly tell the difference between, for example, a Hindu idol and a Hindu icon, but I would never keep either one in my house.

My parents were deeply influenced by Doug Wilson, Bill Gothard, James Dobson, etc. They followed the rules. They did everything by the book. High control.
It didn’t work. At all. The results are pain, divorce, fractures. Half my siblings refuse to talk to my dad. Only my dad is still protestant. Everyone else is orthodox or catholic or walked away from faith altogether. The pain from these terrible teachings has lasting consequences.
I’m sharing these episodes in hopes that maybe one family will be spared the pain that we went through. There are a lot of good people here on Nostr who are finding Jesus and trying to do life right, just like my parents were before they got sucked into Wilson’s orbit.
I highly recommend listening to this episode even if you listen to none of the others. The two guests make very solid arguments, which are fully consistent with sound doctrine.
And to front run the haters, I’m not a theological liberal, a feminist, or an apologist for the cultural zeitgeist. Maybe I’m a little bitter at Wilson, but I have to be at this point just so I don’t blame my parents. Wilson probably wouldn’t take an ounce of responsibility for his role in this. But for him, ideology comes first, and so even if my family is a casualty of his crusade it’s a price worth paying.

Wilson does lean towards Orthodoxy on several particular topics, namely infant communion and aspects of his understanding of salvation and grace. But that’s not necessarily a good thing. Taking bits of Orthodoxy into a Protestant framework can cause lots of issues.
An example of this is Bill Gothard, who defined grace as “the power that God gives us to do his will”. That’s closer to the Orthodox understanding than most Protestants are. But he keeps that understanding of grace within a typical Protestant Penal Substitution Atonement model where salvation is getting God to be not mad at you anymore. Take that definition of Grace and put it into Eph. 2:8, and salvation (from the wrath of God) becomes a matter of doing enough good works. In addition, this is within a sort of prosperity gospel framework where bad things that happen to you are always your fault for stepping outside of God’s will or having insufficient good works etc etc.
Wilson does something very similar to Gothard but of course couches it in much more rhetorical sophistication. Ultimately it is a theological system that is designed for cult-like control. Those within the system can never be sure if they are under wrath or under grace (it’s a total binary) because a state of grace is demonstrated by showing sufficient works and obedience to those in authority. I grew up in a Wilson/Gothard influenced household and I always believed (until my mid teens) that God was mad at me and I was “unsaved” and heading for Hell because of some deficiency of my faith as expressed by my works/obedience. It was only as a teenager that I got a sense of peace that God loved me and was unconditionally for me that I was finally able to experience and grow in the spiritual walk (not coincidentally, Wilson’s influence in our family diminished at that time).
In summary, if your going to be Orthodox be Orthodox, and if your going to be Reformed be Reformed. Don’t mix and match between theological systems. No good can come of it.

I have a serious issues with the systems calling themselves “Biblical Manhood and Womanhood” or “Complementarianism” or “Christian Patriarchy”. They are mostly ad hoc theological systems cobbled together in reaction to feminism. Most of it is theologically shallow and sloppy and yet makes sweeping generalizations that extend far beyond the actual text of Scripture. Their main mode of argument is to set a false dichotomy between their teaching and liberal feminism, as if those were the only two possible options.
In broad terms it is Protestant men looking for absolute dictatorial authority over their homes and local churches, while completely ignoring (or even rebelling against) the actual God ordained authority of the apostolic Church and the Church’s Holy Tradition.
They are libertarians with respect to government, but their libertarianism stops at their front door and they are petty tyrants in their marriages and families.
They claim that Bishops and Priests and Tradition have no authority but set themselves up as little Popes in their own churches, claiming that their personal interpretation of scripture is absolute and irrefutable.
They demand that wives and children get rid of every wayward thought and feeling (and even that wives endure great difficulties), yet they themselves are often slaves to pleasure, anger and sexual vice.
They say that this authority is all to protect women and children, yet they routinely ignore and even blame victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse.

The death penalty is actually applied in a NT context, but it’s not stoning. It’s excommunication. St. Paul says:
‘But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner—not even to eat with such a person. For what have I to do with judging those also who are outside? Do you not judge those who are inside? But those who are outside God judges. Therefore “put away from yourselves the evil person.”’(1 Corinthians 5:11-13, Nkjv)
That last sentence is a reference to the OT death penalty (Deut 21:21 for example), which St. Paul re-applies to the church.
So that makes me agree with your intuition that stoning no longer applies. From what I’ve read, the Christendom of the first millennium (especially the east) was actually quite reluctant to apply the death penalty. But it may be more complicated than that.

One thing that I struggled with as a Protestant was the idea that God loved me. The view I grew up with saw salvation as binary: either I was covered by the blood of Jesus or I was under the judgment and wrath of God for my sin. There were no other possible states. In that framing any salvation that is something more or other than “by grace through faith” was spiritually toxic because it made the salvation of Christ inaccessible and therefore meant my experience of God was only wrath.
But all I’ll say is that God loves you. God is for you, not against you. God’s wrath is not my problem, sin, death and the devil are my problem. That’s what we are saved from.

When I was Baptist I met an ABWE Baptist missionary to Ukraine who was back in the US fundraising. Something about him struck me as off. Then later I saw his YouTube channel where he was blatantly lying about Orthodox Christians in Ukraine and I thought aren’t missionaries supposed to be honest? Then after the Russian intervention in 2022 he was interviewed by ABWE, and literally every word he said was a slogan or official CIA talking point.
So when Jay pointed out that tons of Protestant missionaries work directly with the CIA, I can say I’ve met one.

My bishop at the time was the Patriarch of Antioch. Thankfully we have a local bishop again now.
I’m pretty sure trying to explain the nuances of American non-denominational churches to the Patriarch would have been a tall order. And then he’d just say “baptize the heathen!” 😂

My low church Protestant baptism did not include an exorcism prayer. Or much else forOne of many reasons I’m thankful that my priest decided to receive me into the Orthodox Church by baptism. That liturgy is so much deeper and richer than the low church version.

Good point. Would not surprise me if Russell was sucked into the gnostic side of evangelical Christianity, he seems to trend that way.

I think Russell is sincere, but fame can be spiritually toxic to anyone, new converts in particular. I’ve been a Christian for a long time and seen plenty of celebrity converts go sideways. People always say “oh he wasn’t sincere!” But the truth is that putting new Christians into a leadership role is really damaging to their faith.
