Last spring, an unknown plant started growing in one of the containers in front of my home. I was curious to find out what it was, so I let it grow. And it got taller, and taller, and taller… and finally just started to bloom. It’s a Dakota Sunshine sunflower! No idea where it came from, but I’m happy it found a good home. 🌻😊

It was a nice reward this evening to see some feathered backyard friends swoop in and enjoy quick splash-baths in the outdoor fountain moments after I finished cleaning and refilling it. It made the chore a little less mundane, a little more magical. ⛲️🐥

@npub15m4…65d4 Not sure if you’ve read this series. I just finished the first book, and am starting the second. Kinda reminds me a little of the Brandstetter books, with the gay main character here navigating his way as a small town sheriff.

So I took the bus to Rocky Mountain National Park today. I really felt like I needed an out-of-town summer adventure, and without me needing to drive. It was the first time I used this bus service, and it was awesome! In the park, I did an 8mi/13km loop hike that took me to five different alpine lakes an along some spectacular falls. It was a good day. 🥾🌞

Yeah, I crush some dried ones and mix them in with bird seed. In theory, squirrels don’t like the spicy capsaicin in the chiles, while birds don’t mind it. It seems to work pretty well. Knock on wood: I haven’t seen squirrels returning to the bird feeder.

I try not to rant too much, but today I was angry. My neighbor ran his lawn sprinkler for 10 continuous hours from morning through evening in 100°F/38°C heat. There’s nothing I can do about it (because reasons), but it was so frustrating to see all that water being selfishly wasted in the heat and drought. 🤬
The good news: While hand-watering my own garden this evening, I found some peace in my tomato plants. 🍅☮️
My neighbor has nothing to show for his efforts, except a bunch of useless green grass and (hopefully) an astronomical water bill. Me? I have fresh tomatoes, and cucumbers, and chiles, and carrots, and peaches, and wildflowers, and pollinators, and birds, and… 🌾🐝
I think that’s what counts the most. 😊

We cannot allow privately-run, for-profit, detention centers to operate secretly and outside the law. I hope Adams County continues to aggressively pursue its authority to inspect the facility and investigate the well-being of those being detained there. ICE and GEO are inhumane organizations.

While riding my bike today, I was hit by a driver in a monster truck and knocked to the ground. I’m OK. Thankfully, I was not injured or worse.
The driver was completely at fault: He did not fully stop as he was exiting his side street onto the road I was traveling. He did not stop at the stop sign, nor did he stop behind the broad white stop bar painted on the pavement, nor did he look out for any cyclists or pedestrians. He just drifted right into the bright green striped bike lane and clipped me before hitting the brakes. 🚴🏽‍♂️💥 🛻
I live in a city that takes bicycle and pedestrian safety pretty seriously. In fact, drivers frequently complain how all of the cycling infrastructure impedes their travel. But this is exactly why we have it — because irresponsible drivers hurt people.
Looking up from the road at the front grille of a monster truck almost on top of you is a nightmare. These trucks are excessive and dangerous as is, but it’s cavalier drivers who are the real menace. Please drive responsibly. 🛑

I tried an experiment this week — making pickled red onions. Not a big deal, except I usually avoid onions because they don’t sit well with me after I eat them. But I’d like to enjoy them more. So, I followed steps to soak the sliced onions in cold water first to remove a bunch of the notorious sulfurous compounds, before doing the quick pickle thing. I think it worked. I ate some for lunch today and don’t sense any strong aftertaste or lingering unpleasantness. Yay! 🥳

By the way, if you’d like to see a live view of how dry it is up near the Continental Divide in Colorado, visit the Tundra Cam from CU Boulder.
https://nwt.lternet.edu/tundracam
“TundraCam is located 64 km (40 miles) northwest of Denver, Colorado (USA) at an elevation of 3528m (11,600ft). The cam is only 27 km (17 miles) west of Boulder, Colorado. More specifically, it lies above timberline on Niwot Ridge in the Front Range mountains, the peaks at the head of the ridge form the Continental Divide.”

Please read this screenshot. It’s an example/reminder of what forecasters at the US National Weather Service do every day. They gather data and information from observations, weather maps, and weather models. Then, they apply their expertise to teasing out and explaining the details of a complicated weather forecast, trying to be as accurate as possible about amounts, timings, impacts, threats, etc. What these scientists do 24/7 is amazing.
Over the past year, though, US science organizations like the NWS have been hollowed out in the name of “government efficiency.” In reality, the administration just wants to destroy these organizations and parcel out their remains to private companies for exploitation and profits.
Every time I see another US science agency cut, downsized, reorganized, renamed, etc., my heart sinks at the tremendous, irreversible losses we are witnessing. It is stupefying that we are doing this to ourselves, and it saddens me tremendously. I wish we weren’t so ignorant.
