It wouldn't be difficult to set up a small building crafts school to teach young couples how to build their own homes. Programs to fund students exist almost everywhere in the world. The materials are not expensive. There is ample lands. Why not let your municipality become the first to give young citizens a chance to start a new life debt free?

In 2019 I visited the "Den Grønne Genbrugshal" in Copenhagens Christiania autonomous enclave. The building itself is from 1847 (first photo, which I found online, other photos are mine), and used to be a riding school attached to the barracks of an army garrison. Since 1978 it houses recycled and second hand building materials (anything from work clothes to tools to lime to wood and insulation), which are available to the public from 2011. You could probably walk in here with a handcart and after a few visits build your own home.

Chronic lower back pain cost the US $100 billion annually directly and two or three times that if you include indirect costs like loss of labour. However simple walking for about 1.5-2 hours daily reduced the risk of developing it by 23%. The cost reduction for society encouraging us to walk more and drive less are potentially huge (not even starting to count all the other health positives of walking). Why not start with encouraging the building of walkable mixed high density neighborhoods and towns that was the human norm for thousands of years? And make them walkable. We know from studies on campuses and theme parks that even Americans are happy to spend far more than 2 hours on their feet if they can be distracted by alluring or interesting surroundings.

A 1922 brick building with a glazed terracotta cladding. All of it factory made. Louis Sullivan might be gone but we can easily copy and mass produce his designs. Terracotta is cheap and easily manufactured by small local factories and artisans. We used to have catalogs where you could order the exact facade you wanted and hire a local worker to put it up on your steel frame, brick front, timber frame, rammed earth, cob, stone, adobe or straw bale building. We can do this again.

On the conservatism of Herbert Butterfield and the secular vision of original sin: “When we abandon the notion of original sin, we come to think that evil is concentrated entirely among our enemies, and that none of it lies in ourselves. By projecting all evil onto our opponents, we authorize ourselves to "treat the political enemy as subhuman, irredeemable." Political struggle then takes on existential stakes, becoming a war between the righteous and the wicked—with ourselves, of course, on the side of the righteous.... In political life, certain ideas motivate people to crush their enemies and to pursue final solutions. One of them is self-righteousness; another is utopianism.” https://www.nationalaffairs.com/publications/detail/herbert-butterfield-and-original-sin

The money in solar isn't in electricity, it is in installation. Once that is done the solar power farms are more or less abandoned and when it comes time for major maintenance and/or removal, the owners are long gone, having disappeared in a maze of sub-contractors and international schemes. Left with the mountains of toxic waste, ruined land, irreversible pollution, are the people.

They think we can have order without hierarchy. They believe we can have progress without vision. They believe in education without learning, in health care with neither health nor care. They believe we can have safety with vigilance and law without justice. They ask for freedom without accepting obligations. Yet they will receive the opposite of everything they ask for. Theirs are the ruins, and all we can do is to remain standing.

Life needs boundaries: “Those countries in Europe which are still influenced by priests, are exactly the countries where there is still singing and dancing and coloured dresses and art in the open-air. Catholic doctrine and discipline may be walls; but they are the walls of a playground. Christianity is the only frame which has preserved the pleasure of Paganism. We might fancy some children playing on the flat grassy top of some tall island in the sea. So long as there was a wall round the cliff’s edge they could fling themselves into every frantic game and make the place the noisiest of nurseries. But the walls were knocked down, leaving the naked peril of the precipice. They did not fall over; but when their friends returned to them they were all huddled in terror in the centre of the island; and their song had ceased.” ― G.K. Chesterton

It would be easy for immensely wealthy places like California to build entire neighborhoods or cities impervious to wildfires. But of course they won't. However as an experiment it would be interesting if California could allow a single street to be built using traditional earthquake and fire-proof building methods: thick walls of earth, no gutters to collect flammable debris, windows and doors that can be easily sealed with wet clay and shuttered to not shatter from heat, and tiled roofs that won't catch fires from embers. Like the Japanese Kura storehouses. A system of neighborhood covering sprinklers would also be extremely efficient and not even require a new type of homes. Fire season is coming. As usual.

Progressives have been on a one hundred year long quest to suppress traditional architecture, to ridicule its defenders, to make the practice of it impractical and illegal. Academia has been captured and fundamentally altered for ever to cater to modernist ideology. All schools everywhere now teach nothing but modernism ideology. There is no freedom of speech or thought or expression: it has been wiped out, or where the physical object itself is too large or conspicuous, mothballed and quarantined in layers of ordinances and red-tape. Don't come to us and say that we are the authoritarian, the unreasonable and the irrational. YOU, the architect, the planner, the politician: YOU are the authoritarian tyrant ignoring the people at best and attacking them at worst, in perfect stochastic terrorism. YOU are not the plucky rebel against a hoary tradition. Have some dignity. Step back. Repent. Posterity will judge you harshly for what you have done to our cities and homes.

Our most important buildings, our religious and civic buildings, should be embedded into the cities they belong to not cut out and set apart in some four lane traffic island or modernist wet dream of a 'tower in a park.' With colleagues at a bus cafe in the most touristy part of Kyoto we get a lesson in pattern awareness and stereotypes: the staff can not clear the tables, and for that reason there is "return tray area". Nation A arrives, finds a table cluttered with cups and wrappers. Quietly cleans it up, take their repast, leaves their table spotless. Nation B arrives, finds clean table, leaves all their garbage behind. Nation C arrives to cluttered table, doesn't mind, eat and drink amidst the detritus and filth and leaves the table even worse than they found it. Nation D arrives, in their native language they loudly curse the syphilitic human beasts that did this, with frowns they clean up the table and have their drinks and snacks, cleans up table as they leave.

When I wrote about this in 2020 I got death threats from Americans. ""3 min after contaminating a wooden board 99.9% of bacteria had died, while none of the bacteria died on plastic. Bacterial numbers actually increased on plastic cutting boards held overnight at room temp., but the scientists could not recover any bacteria from wooden boards."

On Japanese Twitter the big outrage de jour is the editor of an art journal dissing his hometown for being lacking in culture ("there's nothing but a shopping mall"). Obviously small town people are offended and pointing out the particular charms of his particular hometown (and doing absolutely valid but also nasty comparisons to the other kind of cultural nadir that he currently resides in, a nouveau riche tower apartment) while calling for his public apology. The sad thing is that everyone involved is correct but nobody wants to admit that the other side has incredibly valid points that are never ever in a million years up for public discussion. In Japanese media today you will find a thousand published articles about the Gaza conflict but not a single article on the ongoing aesthetic impoverishment of Japan. It is depressing.

You most likely can't build your own home. Neither can you grow your own food or speak your mind unless you are fully compliant with the latest dogma. You can't dance nor can you woe, but you know how to do human window shopping on Tinder. Most likely you don't know how to dress well enough to flatter yourself. You can't speak well enough to earn the admiration of your peers (because school doesn't believe in norms). You can't make money unless it is by usury, nor can you save it: inflation and fiscal easing will eat it up. You don't know what you want because your dreams and desires have been muddled by advertising and competition. If you have children chances are that they don't even know if they are boys or girls. All your life you have been lied to: "You can be anything you want." "It is never too late." You are rootless and most likely uprooting others. Not like the farmers fleeing the dustbowl: you are the dust. Or will soon be. "Who can believe in the current prophecies, since we are yesterday's splendid future?" The time for wrath is long overdue.

I believe that we have already reached history singularity. There are books and documentaries and movies being made about current events while still ongoing. People write history books in anticipation of events. Even more damning is that all current history wether pop or academic is more about the current times than whatever it is supposedly describing. There is simply no truth or even attempt at objectivity. It is all mere commentary on ongoing political events and cultural revolutions.

Regarding the ever ongoing debate on suburb vs. urban life for families. If you liv in a car dominant society and you are used to driving everywhere, it is an easy trade-off to move out to suburbia or new developments to acquire that "space" (or backyard). The cost of doing so is small compared to the savings from avoiding the negatives of city life in most of the contemporary West. However, I believe it is dishonest to say that children or teens (who can't drive anyway) are more keen on having the "space" rather than easy access to friends and peers to play with.
Having said that, most of our cities (even here in Japan) are now so completely uninhabitable by children acting independently that even relatively safe and clean urban environments where public transit is cheap and efficient have stopped offering the benefits of urban life as perceived by children.
When the benefits of living in the best possible cities are outweighed by the simple fact that any child is never more than one false step away from sudden death on city street, and there is no viable alternative, you will get children who learn to self-medicate this modern illness with voluntary isolation, games, social media, etc.
Children don't want a backyard, parents want backyards. Children want other children, but we as a society have decided that cars are the most important thing in the world.
So we have doomed ourselves to live in a sort of urban or suburban prisons.

Drywall is manufactured from mined natural resources often with a mix of recycled contents from coal power plants, contaminated with heavy metals, arsenic, off-gassing formaldehyde etc. The production is energy intensive. Installation is hard on human bodies leading to more cases of occupational injures than almost any other building trade. At the end of its lifecycle (currently a couple of decades at most) it is inevitably landfilled leading to further pollution.
Or you can go with wood paneling. It literally grows on trees, a huge carbon sink, lasts for many centuries, so clean you can compost it, no off-gassing, and when you move house or tear it down, you can take it with you and reuse again and again.
