I think "national anthems" are just a load of baloney to remind the people that they are serfs of their government and instill some weird pride in that fact. Same with flags, national mottos, national sports teams, and all the other crap - I refuse to be lumped in with millions of people I don't even know who live nowhere near me, take my money, and impose their rules on me via consent to government tyranny - simply because they talk kinda similar to me and live in bondage to the same band of brigands in the capital city?

If I could have the Amish lifestyle without the religious nuttery, now that would be something.
Instead of the bible, I'd keep some Aristotle on hand, as well as Menger, Nietzsche, Kant, Bastiat, Dante, and Pareto. You know, education rather than indoctrination.

Haha, yeah I feel the same way, I'm afraid I live quite a few towns over but that's what I keep coming back to. I've recently spent an entire day working in the garden, raking leaves, cutting back plants, digging up trees and planting them somewhere else and while it was hard work, all my weird little aches and pains, physically and mentally, just went away.
Same thing when we re-tiled the bathroom the other day or when doing new fronts for kitchen cabinets, there's just something wholesome in that kind of activity.

Well, regardless whether that's true or not, from an a priori standpoint and considering I'm paying roughly 75-80% of my income in income tax, various excise taxes, and VAT, I could fairly easily get by doing roughly 20-25% of the work I'm doing now.
And since I don't believe I'm all that special in the history of mankind, I guess it's conceivable that people in the past paying little to no taxes could've had heaps of free time 😄

I feel like the more nationalized and bureaucratized scientific study has become, the less innovation it has produced.
There are apparently so many scientists now busying themselves with little other than writing grant applications, i.e. begging other bureaucrats for money.
There hasn't been a major advance in physics since the 1960s.
Material science has mostly succeeded in putting more plastic in everything.
The technological process I'm glad to be able to see is almost entirely driven by engineers using known scientific principles in new and clever ways, but the big questions not only remain unanswered, they're buried by DEI statements, gender studies grants, and pointless observations concerning the ability of krill to use treadmills.
In the days of gentlemen naturalists, new stuff would come flying at you at such a bewildering pace that people couldn't help but imagine a phantastical space-faring civilization living in abundance by the year 2000.

I like that ribbon type old-timey bookmark that beautifully bound books still have.
Alas, I don't have the means to buy a whole lot of those so I mostly read print-on-demand paperbacks by fantastic, yet nearly forgotten authors.
So I built myself a crooked little brass clip with a ribbon attached to enjoy some classic bookmarking action on any old pile of recycled paper I have on my puny bookshelf.
