Also learned that corporate is busily rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic by mandating a completely different dress code so I've got to replace my entire work wardrobe soon;

Having said all of this, it's important to remember we must strive to provide #empathy to our fellow passengers. For some of us, this is the closest we can get to #therapy. If people share their struggles and challenges, I implore all of us to remember that #kindness and understanding are radical acts of decency.
Above all, protect yourself by blocking "early and often". You aren't obligated to continue hosting a visitor on your digital "porch". You can simply close the door. I can tell you with absolute certainty that I've never blocked someone and later thought, "oh gee, I shouldn't have blocked them so fast." It's generally the opposite.

Hi Everyone,
I'm feeling very torn this today as I look out our big windows with picturesque views; this past month and a half living here has been a godsend for our mental health. I honestly thought we'd be getting caught up on everything by now, but a couple of unexpected costs and us both getting low hours scheduled at work (which in and of itself is fortunate because I pour everything into my crappy retail job and have zero energy or spoons left even *with* fewer hours, and because my partner is adjusting to working after two straight years of being in a #CPTSD-induced anxiety attack) have combined to leave us far, far shorter than I anticipated.
I really need to find a better job or some other source of income pronto, but that's easier said than done. Work leaves me so utterly depleted that I'm lucky if I can manage basic hygiene let alone trying to find higher-paid employment with zero marketable skills or higher education.
The idea of using AI against the ruling class by way of faking credentials to join them and become an exorbitantly-paid middle manager sounds more alluring with each passing day.
I'm so angry with myself because I don't want to jeopardize our situation here. Neither of us have felt the kind of tranquility that we experience here in a very long time. Like.. we're ready for this to be our forever home. If we can't live our dream of moving to Southern California or somewhere along the west coast, this is probably the best possible place we could be at this point in time and for the foreseable future.
So it is with an exhausted but hopeful heart that I ask the community, yet again, to bail us out. It is yet another outrageous sum, and for that I apologize. I had a feeling we were going to come up short, but I didn't think it was going to be THAT short. But I swear to you, we're giving this everything we've got.
I must humbly request help again.

Hi everyone!
We've been *insanely* fortunate thanks to the #Fediverse, and we are immensely grateful. You all believed in us when we didn't even believe in ourselves. I wake up every morning kind of.. excited. I throw open the blinds and look out at the views from our apartment with a kind of reverence. It's incredible.
I'm not used to feeling this way. It's almost unnerving at times because I'm so used to the gnawing feeling of doom, and I'm scared of going back to that. It seems like things are finally starting to fall into place.
These past weeks since you all banded together to give us this apartment have been surreal. I kind of shudder to think of where we'd be without your generosity.
I'm trying really hard to break the habit of pay advances, both due to the fees involved and the need to save as much money as we can for rent. I am also desperately wanting to reach a point of stability that we won't need to begpost anymore.
Unfortunately we've had multiple incidental expenses involved with getting set up with a functional apartment or having functional headlights on our only car, etc. so we aren't quite there yet.
So I must humbly ask for your help yet again.
We need to keep our car insured so my partner can get safely to and from his new job (which he is still employed at, and I am so unbelievably fucking proud of him!!) and the several hours' worth of driving we'll be doing on Christmas to visit family in opposite ends of the valley, but it's due for cancellation tomorrow.
Let me close by including a candid photo of our Codependent Border Collie, enjoying his new apartment with oodles of space to run around and play. He loves it here as well, thanks to our online community here.

WARNING: Incredibly long-winded diatribe ahead. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery while reading this.

I try to be respectful and use CWs when fundraising to avoid unnecessary cluttering of the timeline unless incredibly urgent. I never, *ever* want to make people feel pressured or scammed, and if I have inadvertently done so, I sincerely apologize.
Having said that, I realize it's very arrogant of me to request this after all the help we've been given on our journey already. There are countless other people in far more dire circumstances. There are even people on the Fediverse who are flat-out homeless, so how can I justify such a frivolous plea for help?
My counter-argument to that is: regrettably, I don't have one. I have no idea how we've been so lucky when there are so many others also in need.
Ever since an encounter I had recently, I've tried to think of how I would feel about other people raising the kinds of funds that have been donated to us. Would I feel jealous, or that it was just "getting old", despite them going to great lengths to not seem pushy or yelling and to just be as unobtrusive as possible?
Obviously I'm biased, but my answer to that question has always been "Absolutely not". I would feel excited and happy that they were being helped. I have helped a couple of people fundraise and I was just as thrilled seeing us hit goal for a total stranger halfway across the country, as I am when *we* hit goal.
Where am I going with this, you ask? Well, perhaps I'm still a little rattled from the aforementioned encounter. I try to look at our situation as if through the lens of others but somehow I can't always muster as much sympathy or excitement for *us* as I would for literally anybody else.
I don't honestly have a valid justification for making this request and I'm struggling like hell to get past that because personally, I wouldn't fault anyone else for a humble CW'd request as this yet it feels vain to write this.
Alright, none of that had any point. Yay cannabis!
So my exceptionally long-winded immediate digression aside, I'm hoping people might consider the following scenario as a "housewarming" gift:
We're coming up on Black Friday. (Yes, I know this is supporting bloodthirsty capitalism. I am a hypocrite, okay? They've got some good deals and I don't know what else to do.)
We haven't owned a bed since we had to abandon it due to poor planning and a very urgent need to get the hell out of a toxic situation. Since we'd been living in motels for just a couple days past a full calendar year, I was making due with what we had in the motel rooms but now that we're in an apartment finally, we've been sleeping on 4" foam padding on the floor. Let me tell you how great that is for my allergies with a prolifically shedding border collie, and how relaxing it is after a full shift of pushing carts. (That's a negative on both counts.)
One of our local furniture stores has a bed I would love on a Black Friday deal, and they do delivery. It's the cheapest I've been able to find with the features I need.
Why not a used mattress, you may ask? What's my justification? Why do I seem to be asking so many rhetorical questions so as to rival Rumsfeld?
The answer to the first two questions in the previous paragraph is multi-pronged: my incessant, never-ending allergies, and a brand-new mattress allows me to put a mattress protector over it and then an hypoallergenic, waterproof liner over that. My allergies are fucking ridiculous.
Secondly, for some inexplicable reason, I seem to do better with back problems if I sleep on a *firm* mattress rather than a fluffy pillowtop. Weirdly, it seems rather difficult to locate a used, firm mattress in good condition in our area.
Thirdly, it gets our bed installed in our apartment. We let the professionals lug those suckers up a narrow flight of stairs to our bedroom.
Alright, if anyone has managed to make it this far, there's another part to this:
We haven't had a full-size couch in six years. God I miss having a couch. I've always used second-hand sofas because pets. Plus brand-new couches cost a fortune. The problem is transportation; usually when a couch we like comes up on the free classifieds section, we have no way to get it home.
I found a local couch - god I hope it hasn't been sold and the seller was just too lazy to take the ad down - that, as far as I can tell from studying a handful of pics of it seems to be in great condition. And the seller is willing to deliver it, although I doubt they would be interested in scaling the above-mentioned stairs.
These two items would make our apartment truly feel like home. And I'm pretty sure I can have them both transported here if not set up inside as well, for $600. Sadly, despite the large price tag I'm afraid this is probably one of our cheapest opportunities.
I promise you we are trying so damned hard to become self-sufficient, despite this request and a gnawing fear that I won't quite be able to make December's rent, which I really *really* don't want to happen during our first month here in the complex.
In closing, let me just say once again that we are insanely grateful for all the help everyone has given us these past few years, and I mean that from the bottom of my cold, cynical heart. We would've lost all our possessions and risked entering a vicious cycle of bad situations. I will never understand why we were chosen to be so fortunate, but thank Cthulu you've kept us alive nonetheless.

*sigh*
My partner just reminded me that because I didn't get a paycheck today (I now in fact owe *them* $20) we don't have funds for the motel room in the morning. I somehow didn't connect the two in my head so now we're up against a time crunch.
I truly have no idea how much my pay advance will be until the morning now that things have been so weird lately with my pay thanks to this damned "wage-compression" bonus.
I *think* the $20 I now owe them will come out of the next paycheck, but I don't know for certain.
So, worst case scenario: if they do short my pay advance tomorrow (or now today rather since I wasn't off work until almost midnight) to cover the supposed overpayment, I'm looking at roughly $50 available.
The room is roughly $90 (which is far more reasonable than $140 for today). We have to use a prepaid visa debit card to pay and, irritatingly they place an additional ten percent or so above the charge itself so we'll need at least $10 in order to actually make the payment.
I'm disappointed with myself for not planning better. However, this has been a useful learning experience because it never occurred to us that we could make several individual single-day reservations ahead which should hopefully allow us to somewhat avoid skyrocketing "peak demand" prices.
Anyway.. long story short, we have roughly 8 hours to make the motel room payment. We simply don't have enough room in my car to transport two humans and a dog and all of our stuff which is even more complicated now that we have a bit of a commute; in other words, I would only have a couple of hours before work to drive at least 40 miles round-trip to our storage unit and hurl everything on top of our already overflowing pile of crap.
Plus I would really prefer not to have to drag the mini-fridge and microwave downstairs after just bringing them up yesterday. My back is still sore from the climb.
With all that said, I must once again humbly ask for help somewhat urgently to keep us housed.

For a few days this week, I felt alive.
My daily pay advances were suddenly much larger than they usually are. I'm such a fucking idiot, I allowed myself to believe that they must've promoted me to Team Lead on the payroll side before they had officially declared me the new TL, maybe as a suprise or a fluke or something.
Nope.
Of course not.
A 44 year old man should know better.
For two or three days, I felt like a human being again for the first time in.. I really don't know how long. I was able to actually place the grocery order that my partner had prepared, without culling it down to pop-tarts and sandwiches. I was able to pay for our storage unit. I was able to fill up the gas tank in our car, all without having to beg for donations to survive. I was able to pay for the motel room without needing to pray we had enough to cover the additional hold fees for the visa charge.
For those couple of days, I felt like I was actually getting paid what I was worth. It's also amazing how much more pleasant work can be when you seem to be getting paid enough to stay independently fed and housed.
I hadn't realized the crushing stress of trying to survive on $16/hr. It isn't enough for one person to live on, let alone two. I'd become inured to the fear of not knowing if I could raise enough money to keep us housed.
Turns out they bumped the minimum pay rate at my location by fifty cents, and since I've been here for more than two years I got a one-time "fuck you, the teenagers are now making as much as you" wage compression bonus. It's the one time in almost three years I've seen them make income other than hourly wages available through the pay advance.
I also got a thirty-two cent raise, which taking inflation into account means another penny or so of actual income increase.
Fortunately I somehow managed to resist going on a spending spree, and for good reason; since I had received advances that totaled more than my actual wages, they clawed back the pay for my entire shift on Wednesday. I spent my day off yesterday fuming because it felt like I had just worked an awful, miserable shift for *free*. I'll be lucky if I get anything for today's shift either.
I calculated what my pay would've been if those pay advances had been wage income, and it equated to roughly $22 per hour - approximately six dollars more per hour than my current pay rate.
Our Team Leads don't even make quite that much.
That's all it would take for me to not spend the vast majority of my waking hours being irritated that I continue to wake up alive and breathing every morning.
Six fucking dollars per hour.
Amidst all of this, Wednesday night I was struck by an epiphany as I dove head-first into an emotional meltdown over being given contradictory instructions; I was overwhelmed with the realization that they will never *ever* let me be TL, because a) I can't handle criticism b) I can't handle conflicting or contradictory instructions, and c) I wilt in a crisis.
Team Leads here might potentially be responsible for the safety of an entire store full of employees and customers, all for less than $22/hr.
That's what it feels like I *should* be getting paid in my current position *now*. I shouldn't have to make potentially life or death decisions regarding dozens of people for a piddly $5/hr raise.
Regardless of all of this, I realized I've reached my limit for surviving on starvation wages. I've had a taste of life without being on the edge of homelessness. I'm not doing it anymore.
One way or another, I am not going back to that. I'm tired of going hungry on my lunch breaks. I'm tired of relying on charity to survive. I'm tired of seeing our dog age prematurely because we can't afford to get him vaccinated so that we can take him to places to exercise him. I'm tired of this goddamned fucking sore the size of a pencil eraser on my tongue because of another cracked tooth constantly rubbing it.
All of these things seem like such luxuries, and compared to billions of people they truly *are* luxuries. I know I should just be grateful for living in suburbia instead of war-torn wastelands.
But for fucking fuck's sakes, I just want to have enough money to eat and live.
One way or another I am done with all of this.
Except there *is* no other way. I am quite possibly in the best possible employment situation I will ever be able to obtain. I'm a middle-aged man with no skills. It's only downhill from here.
This isn't an acceptable quality of life for me. It isn't worth it.
Anyone know if Kevorkian is still alive? No? *sigh* I wonder if there's any sort of advance sign-up for Kilmeade's homeless reduction program.
Six dollars an hour more is all the additional wages I would need to feel like a functional human being.

Alright.. Change of plans. Maybe? Help me decide.
We're almost at our goal for a hotel room for the next five days, but it finally occurred to me that perhaps rather than dumping all this money into even more hotel costs, we should instead do the mature thing and put it towards the apartment application, initiation fee, etc. etc. to get the ball rolling.
It might mean spending a night or two in the car if we can't raise additional funds, but it's a third of the way to us being in *an* apartment.

Hello, my friends.
I've stared at this screen for five minutes trying to figure out how to write this.
It's getting to the point where the thought of having to write yet another begpost (especially one of such an amount, again) makes my skin crawl.
But I must do this because I need to everything I can to keep my family safe.
My only hope for ceasing this constant digital panhandling is a promotion at work that I really, really need. My family desperately needs an income increase.
Yet my only hope for that promotion is rest, and my only hope for rest is to be safely housed.
Realistically, no one is going to co-sign on an apartment for a total stranger so my only practical option right now is to continue staying in hotels.
Our most reasonable option for a hotel is impractical if we don't pay several days at a time.
So.. I'm attempting to raise funds for a week's stay at said hotel, and to cover a haircut and beard trim so I look presentable at work.
Goddammit I hate doing this. Especially such a large amount.
But I need somewhere to sleep.

Alright Fediverse, I need your cooking help: We boiled some chicken in water last night and now have a pot full of liquid. I say that even though we didn't add any oil (only things added were salt, pepper, and taco seasoning) it would still have fat from the chicken and I'm not sure how to correctly dispose of it.
Can it be poured in the garbage disposal, or do we need to find an old can or something to pour it into and throw in a dumpster?

For the past week or so, things ended up falling in line financially so that we were able to pay for our motel room the night before it was due instead of the morning of; this took a little bit of pressure off my partner who struggles more with his anxiety first thing anyway, because I had to rely on him to take care of it because I work late and would be sleeping at the time we would need to take care of it.
Unfortunately his meds cost a little more than we expected yesterday. Additionally I had to hurry and buy more allergy medication today because my retail location is suddenly carrying fresh flowers within feet of where I have to work now.
So.. it was nice while it lasted I suppose, but I guess things like that always do have to come to an end eventually.

Howdy everyone,
Forgive me for cluttering your timeline with the rattling of my digital tin cup. It's my day off, which means time to scramble to catch up everything I've had no spoons for during the week and by extension wake up even more tired tomorrow than I did this morning.
Anyway, what little I had left over from my pay advance from yesterday's shift after paying for today's motel room had to be used for the laundromat and a handful of items from the grocery store.
Consequently, I have virtually nothing available to cover our motel room in the morning ($60). In addition, our storage unit (with the vast majority of our worldly possessions) is due this weekend ($190). If we can pay it on time, it would save $50-$60 in late fees. I'm trying to be more proactive about fundraising for it *before* it's past due.
I know #MutualAid is rapidly becoming more scarce as more people who didn't win the birth lottery become perilously close to the edge of financial oblivion, and scammers taking advantage of others for nefarious purposes.
I also know we've used far more than our "fair share" of those same resources making it more difficult for others to accomplish their fundraising needs, which is something that weighs heavily on my mind every waking minute.
Furthermore, I'm depressingly aware that the community might be starting to get overwhelmed and desensitized to the needs of community #Solidarity. The words "This isn't GoFundMe!" makes me cringe a little every time I read them because I try so hard to fight the shame and embarrassment of needing help -- but it seems more difficult to show oneself grace compared to showing mercy to others.
My partner and I are two members of the #LGBTQ+ community. We struggle with #MentalIllness and my partner in particular fights the demons of untreated #PTSD every day. We tend to #SelfMedicate to cope with reality, and we can barely care for ourselves.
I wish every day that I had the spoons to hold down a second job to help support our little family. I know he wishes every day he could get a handle on the psychological turmoil in his battered brain.
We're not intentionally trying to scam or mislead, but I understand if it's just gotten to be too much dealing with us constantly panhandling. I believe very strongly that all of us here on the Fediverse deserve a timeline where they feel comfortable.
Nevertheless, even if you mute or block me I plead that you not become numb to the needs of the community. Remember to carefully vet the people to whom you donate to avoid professional scammers, and hold on dearly to the empathy that has made Mastodon and the Fediverse my passion for more than two years now.
Perhaps that's what scares me more than anything else -- the loss of empathy. There are many people in far more tumultuous circumstances; even if you've reached the last straw with me, I beg of you, dear reader, to cling tightly to your empathy and guard it with everything you've got.
I'm pretty sure empathy is the only chance we have.

In the foyer of the restaurant was an old, mechanical, coin operated cigarette vending machine. Not behind the counter, not under watch, but directly next to the bench seating for folks waiting for a vacant table. Just about anyone could walk up and buy a pack if no one was looking.

Well.. I mean, it might inflict some discomfort but ideally that's the point - to ward them off long enough for you to get the hell away.
Getting the puppy-safe pepper spray is something I've thought about doing for years but general apathy and "well, it doesn't happen very often" was justification to avoid "splurging" on something that may not ever be used.
Not to mention we're in a shithole red state so we could easily get shot by a patriotic patriot (my guess is the venn diagram between unfit dog owners and flag humpers would be informative) but as I'm writing this furious screed, I'm realizing the odds of us being shot are less than the odds of our dogs and/or us being seriously injured by unruly attack dogs.
Anyway.. about a month or so ago, we had a couple incidents in this extended-stay style motel we're at. Another guest had a very aggressive German Shepard that was always on a retractable leash. Our dog is about 85lbs and this Shepard dwarfs him in size.
The first time, I was in the elevator completely cornered with our dog and I saw his snout try to bolt through but the door closed just in the nick of time. No idea if the owner was even aware because she tended to let him wander at least 6-8 feet in front of her.
The second time, my partner (with severe and easily triggered PTSD) had to yank our dog away from the snarling Shepard when they were mere inches away from each other.
I raced out moments after when I heard the commotion. The dog yanked so hard on the leash (once again extended at least 6 or 8 feet) that the owner - a rather full-figured gal in probably at least her 50s - stumbled forward hard several times and nearly fell.
I typically try not to be "that guest" that constantly complains, but this one I did mention to the desk staff. Maybe I was overreacting, but my thought was - this is a pre-pay, extended stay motel. We're not here living in the lap of luxury - which means I doubt she has the money for vet bills. We sure as hell don't. What if that dog had gotten to ours? What if it had attacked us? What if she had fallen and cracked a rib after her L/XL-sized dog at the end of a long slacked rope went from 0-90mph in the blink of an eye?? I doubt she has money for a hospital stay any more than an animal ER visit.
Which means we all would've been effed. My partner would've probably been emotionally shattered indefinitely.
And this dog was at least (sort of) leashed! Imagine how much worse that would've been if she'd been stupid enough to let him roam untethered.
A few weeks later we were asked to move back to our original room on the same floor as this other guest, and I made certain to clarify if they were still there.
Thankfully for our sake, they were asked to leave for what sounds like might have been unrelated (but similarly dreadful) reasons prior to our room switch.
This thread reminds me I've got to quit being so apathetic about this. My partner and I need to protect ourselves and our pup, from dangerous animals AND dangerous/stupid humans. Especially nowadays.

It's me again. I've known this was coming for a couple of days but I kept procrastinating til the last minute in the hope that.. I don't know, I guess that money would magically fall from the sky or something, with better odds for that than me actually figuring out a way to solve our teetering on the edge of homelessness.
My retail job feels like it's slowly killing my soul (and my body) one day at a time. It's a big part of why I've been quiet lately - I am utterly exhausted all the time. Being an emotional support human is another part. Teetering on the edge of homelessness is another. Still in further part, I've been sort of numb since the election.
All this leaves me feeling like I've metaphorically lost my voice - I'm simply too stunned to write lately. I had a couple of projects I was really starting to get psyched about but the topics are quite emotionally heavy and I always feel so depleted that I can't bring myself to work on them. Plus that whole goddamned fear of inescapable failure. Ugh. I need a vacation so I can actually work on stuff.
First thing tomorrow we're going to schedule a tour of an income-restricted housing property who responded to our application. We're trying not to get our hopes up too high but it does sound more practical than some of our other options.
Anyway, we've somehow magically managed to keep this motel room for almost two months now thanks to so many shockingly generous people packed tightly into my little phone. I say magically because I can't wrap my head around the fact that we've still managed to stave off complete homelessness. It seemed impossible yet here we are.
I couldn't find a way to make the money for tonight's stay appear out of thin air contrary to my hopes of solving the dilemma up until the very last moment. It's due by 12pm MST and I must once again for the thousandth time ask for your help. I screwed up - I shouldn't have waited so long hoping I'd Macgyver my way out of the situation and now my lollygagging has put the safety of my partner and our dog at risk. I don't have a rational explanation for it.

Whelp.. I just screamed at the top of my lungs by the self checkouts with two supervisors mere feet away.

I've been fortunate to have had a tremendously positive experience here on the #Fediverse, which I realize comes from a place of privilege but they are my anecdotal experiences nonetheless.
I've never been part of a more empathetic, non-judgemental, accepting and encouraging social group than here and I will ceaselessly preach about it.

Coders, I need your help with an open feature request for the web client I utilize with Mastodon. I don't want to hound the developer who's handling the project for free; nevertheless, the feature request below is something I've been wishing for a long time and I even tried to fork the project but unfortunately working with github is far beyond my already-shallow realm of expertise.
I'm trying implement a colored border around images missing alt-text. My instincts tell me it shouldn't be *too* difficult, but when I try to dig into the project files I immediately get lost and overwhelmed.
Could someone please - out of pity for a weird little man on the internet - help me figure this out?
