so for #FOSDEM 2027, I had another stupid idea everyone insisted was good: it will be v6-only on the main network. The dual stack will get a yearly name change to prevent auto-reconnect. We want people on v6-only and break stuff left and right. Every. Single. Year.
And if #GitHub is not on v6 by next year, trust me, they will put _something_ in place very quickly.

I made the switch to NAT64-only on the default network of #FOSDEM 13(?) years ago. It broke So. Much. Stuff.
I knew the former maintainer of the network tooling from the Linux Kernel Summit, and ran into him by chance that year. #Ubuntu was completely broken on NAT64-only, it did not even bring up the network interfaces, and we sent people who came to the NOC to their booth.
I also sent that former maintainer over there.
They fixed things very quickly.

the plastic cover lets water through. It's tight because the PETG was not saturated yet.
Fun fact: filament is literally cooled in water during extrusion, so drying is always a good idea.

A #debian cry for help: I need to update the packaging for #vcsh to modern standards before the freeze hits. It's trivially easy in theory, but I just lack the spoons.
I keep being laughably busy with really meaningful work, but I can't make the time to sit down a few hours and read.
Three major projects will conclude soon, but then it's likely too late.
Any help or co-maintainers appreciated.

yesterday, we had our post mortem meeting. Blown up to seven hours straight, and we only got through everything by aggressively skipping and timeboxing -- after(!) moving half of it to the kick-off... Almost twenty people on site in Brussels with half a dozen more calling in.
There's a LOT of details and discussions to running a successful #FOSDEM

As of 30 minutes ago, the published videos from #FOSDEM 2025 have more than TWO WEEKS OF TOTAL RUNTIME!

#FOSDEM ask: If you have any #Cisco #SPA500 series #VoIP phones you don't need any more or might be cycling out of use over the year, please get in contact with us / me.
We have had fixed phones at a few key locations this past weekend and want to expand the use of static phones. So an upper bound of maybe 50-60 phones would be very useful to us accounting for all devrooms and for a few spares.

we finished teardown, cleanup, and volunteer dinner at around 21:30, and went for #FOSDEM staff dinner right afterwards. We got to sleep at around 0030.
Today, the trucks will be unloaded, stuff put away, sorted and repackaged.
Two weeks of no FOSDEM anything (hopefully) and then it's back to Brussels for the Post Mortem in two weeks.

#FOSDEM is running well enough that I was able to leave the NOC for something other than toilet breaks repeatedly today!
I got to see the sun!
This is good, as I was able to, you know, do stuff.
But it also meant that it took me ~1.5 hours to get from H to K because I met so. Many. People.
Several, I have not seen since before the pandemic and always missed them as I was stuck in the NOC.
To compensate, I will be doing five sessions tomorrow and still need to prepare four of them :)

Fun fact: The extra time around an event used to be 7 days, and this was distilled pain as I had to chase #FOSDEM #BGP upstreams to update sessions, filters, etc and usually needed to escalate through to last level support
Before automation and the Cloud, a new #BGP announcement took days to weeks by default
So I got the #RIPE policy changed and extended to 1 month :)

I just announced our temporary #IPv4 PI space 151.216.128.0/17 for #FOSDEM. If you want, you can follow it starting to become visible over the next hours and days on any #BGP #lookingglass, e.g. https://lg.de-cix.net/ has quite a few globally so you can see it spread.
As of this writing, https://lg.de-cix.net/search?q=151.216.128.0%2F17 has it in Frankfurt and Marseille, and nowhere else. Usually for new BGP announcements from EU, they show up in LATAM last, with a delay of up to three days.

even with wet wax, those bent wire hooks can get rid of it and the don't shove stuff in. It's better if a second person does it, but you can also do it soon.
I used to use cotton swabs which I carefully spun. A random visit to the doc, they pick out plate after plate of squished and hardened wax.. and I stopped.
Wearing over ears instead of in ears is the biggest factor to avoid runny wax for me. And it's much better for the ear biome so win win

Home after another three weeks of living in an #RV and the most magical thing is -- yet again -- #tapwater.
Open the tap, it comes out, is fresh, and can be consumed at will. A slight motion, it comes out warm. Endlessly. And it just goes away again and you don't have to plan your day around getting rid of it. Grey #water, black water, it just disappears.

There's another round of Strong Feelings And Opinions going around on #AGPLv3 and the main takeaway seems to be, yet again, that smart contracts can not work, and that most engineers take legal texts too literally.
Source code can be understood and interpreted in a vacuum.
Legal texts can not.
"Reasonable" and "precedent" and "intent" are impossible to cleanly map into precise instructions. And this is why that profession doesn't even try and has procedures outside of literal interpretation.

#FOSDEM debugging... Part of K lost power. We traced it to one circuit breaker, and kept putting it back in while dividing and conquering towards finding the fault.
As @npub1tx8…x0yc keeps saying, there's an advantage in being tall. Instead of going up and down the ladder all the time, I simply grabbed a broom and kept pushing the lever up again and again and again until we found it. A power strip had developed a short...
