Figured I would share this story here because it is just so ridiculous. Happy 4th everyone, and be glad you weren’t and aren’t me.
Just spent $3k to have a bunch of stuff done to our car and coming home last night, someone was coming out of the alley when we were trying to go down it. So we went in reverse to let them out, then went to put the car back in drive and it got locked in neutral. Absolutely nothing was working. Had to push the car through the alley where the sewer was backed up and overflowing. Completely soaked feet. Tried some ChatGPT troubleshooting for close to an hour. Nothing. Then the sky completely opens up. Massive thunderstorm. Trying to get the toolbag and the car seat into our garage in a deluge. Finally call the tow service with my insurance. Obviously July 3rd in a monsoon wasn’t exactly a ten minute ordeal. End up waiting in my garage for the guy for almost an hour. Meanwhile our building sewer starts to back up and water starts flooding everywhere in the garage and hallway and starts running into the stairwell. Half our house is in cardboard boxes in there. So I start scrambling to get plastic bins on the bottom and boxes up a flight of stairs. Tow guy shows up in the middle of that. Have to help him load the thing in while it’s pouring. It’s dark and pouring so you can’t really see that the alley is totally flooded. Guy steps out of his truck into the alley backed up sewer water in his Jordans and starts going nuts. Finally get the car out and have it sent to the place that did all the work on my car. Then I had to go back and finish moving the boxes. It’s just sitting at the shop and I have zero clue what’s next.

How to completely torpedo something great because of pure, unadulterated greed. Counterparty risk extends far beyond just holding the claim on on asset. MSTR will almost assuredly “survive” when the Bitcoin price goes back up, but they completely rugged their investors, straight up lied to them many times over, and the promises of what could have been will never materialize with this structure embedded in the company. There is no way to fully optimize each stakeholder’s position. The most screwed are the common stockholders as they suffer the pain of dilution and decreasing share price when BTC is sold to fund things. It’s actually quite sad to witness.

Undergirding all of your comments is, “it’s too engaging and profitable” over there, the trade-offs are not worth it to me. Yes, no one needs a censorship resistant protocol in the U.S. because the centralized one with more of a network effect basically works. Edge cases where censorship happens get complained about over here for sympathy points but everyone goes back eventually.

The reason we had such a muted bull run, and that “retail never showed up” was that retail dumped their money into these paper #bitcoin alchemy machines and were exit liquidity for “founders”, influencers, and a general lot of hucksters. Absolutely everyone that bought shares could have just bought the Bitcoin for themselves and tucked it away in cold storage. None of these companies are needed so far as the, “give me your money, I buy Bitcoin thesis” is their purported purposes. It’s a canard that any of these companies need to exist. The companies, in fact, had overhead and generous packages to pay out that the investors could have just plowed straight into Bitcoin instead of having a portion of their money siphoned off for operations, then the remainder goes to buy Bitcoin. Insurance is just fractional reserve loss guarantee. They run numbers to try to figure out how likely they are to have to pay out claims and then have access to that estimated amount of cash. Just like banks estimate how many people will come take their money out and then lend accordingly, insurance is no different. I don’t think it’s possible for insurance to be non-extractive in a fiat based system. The only reason anyone even needs insurance in the first place is that costs go up forever and expenses in the future can potentially be more than you can afford, so you have to buy a hedge against bankruptcy instead of just a painful out of pocket expense later in life. If you knew your home, medical bills, collision costs, etc were getting exponentially cheaper in the future, you likely would forego insurance.
Add on top of that the forced insurance requirements by states, lenders, etc. you are coerced into buying something you likely otherwise wouldn’t just to be able to drive, buy a home, participate in trade, etc.
Insurance would become for scared dumbos and uber wealthy people that actually would rather get ripped off than face a left tail risk of loss. They would know they are being ripped off from a math standpoint, but that would still be worth it to them. Maybe the latter is the only non-extractive way it could exist.
Lastly, insurance fundamentally guarantees more loss than it can ever afford. It is inherently a ponzi and why the insurance companies need a bailout every time the banks do.
