A reminder that however well-meant, "I'd never have guessed you were on the spectrum" is not the compliment you think it is.
I don't always want to be seen because of judgement, but complimenting me on my mask is sometimes celebrating my pain in ways I do not.

Stuttgart HBf was the same mess it's been since I moved to Europe, with the addition that it was pissing down and leaking through what passes for a roof where there was one.

Random GNUbros of the Internet, a point of info for you:
I spent 15 years of my life with a GNU maintainer of multiple projects as a partner. I can accurately say that his devotion to the cause and according asinine behaviour was part of the downfall of our marriage. And I can say, as someone who is a decent and very experienced software engineer in her own right, that GNUbros jumping into conversations and adding the corrective equivalent of 'But it's GNU Linux' or 'you must mean the platform, not the kernel', or whatever, is one of the many reasons I don't contribute to GNU software, and have written off my prior (thankfully small) contributions.
You aren't converting anybody. You are being dicks.
Not all GNU fans and all, but seriously: NO ONE ASKED YOU.
All you do is hurt your cause. Tuck it back into your pants and move along - it's just not impressive.

re: https://toot.cafe/@baldur/113214687561016279
Nobody who really codes is surprised that AI coding assistants don't help.
If you are a relatively experienced developer and have the experience of having had a colleague who isn't entirely qualified, but wants to LOOK experienced and competent, working on the same code base with you, you'll understand why.
They usually:
- Cut and paste code to make it look similar to other code
- Grab inappropriate or very suboptimal answers from Stack Overflow
- Work very hard to make their code APPEAR good while not understanding why it is not.
And most of the time, if you are resource-strapped, you will end up having to spend more time, at some point, digging through and rewriting their code, or having ENDLESS frustrating code review cycles, than to write it yourself.
Because you have experience solving novel problems. And your colleague doesn't.
What will AI do? Well, since it is just predictive text trained on stuff that "looks" relevant, it will:
- Statistically predict what the code should look like based on what other code looks like
- Reproduce inappropriate or suboptimal solutions from Stack Overflow
- Work very hard to make the code LOOK like it predicts good code should look while not understanding why it is not.
CONGRATULATIONS - you have now automated toxic performative incompetence!!!!!
I promise you, in resource-strapped situations with real problems, just the USE of AI, never mind the COSTS of building AI nonsense extraction/generation machines, will cost FAR more than not using it at all.
That suboptimal colleague means a full-time good developer has just become a 25%-time good developer and a 75%-time surgeon/firefighter/headcase. This is where burnout is born, friends.

I honestly thought it was such a cool idea. We bought one of the early eeePCs, and it ended up being my daughter's introduction to computers as a little tyke (it arrived the day before she was born).
And just remember this - ideas that didn't make it long-term in the world the first time around often come back for more iterations.

2024-09-07 12:32:45 UTC

I need to say something, because it literally impacted my life.
I am just fine with the Cheneys using whatever credibility they have with the marginally reality-based Republicans that theoretically exist.
But never ever fucking forget that the Bush II admin and the 2000 election were the start of the end, and the 9/11 information war, Turdblossom Rove, and very specifically Cheney's wet dreams that turned the floundering TIA into the Patriot Act are what made this all possible to begin with.
2000 broke me. 2001 made me realise I had to leave. By 2009, when I finally got out, I was happy there was an Obama reprieve, but the writing was on the wall, and good ole' Shot-To-The-Face Cheney was definitely one of the writers.

I'm a woman (AFAB also) who has a low voice and tends towards short and stocky, not lithe, and who grew up wanting to do things, not just be looked at. I have the genes of the sturdy German and Swiss farm women who came before me, I guess.
I am not fluffy and feminine, though I don't see myself as not feminine, but clumsy. I AM feminine. I am female. But I don't fit the fascist ideal.
My mom, ex-beauty-queen (for real), invalidated my femininity all the time. The self doubt I felt as a person who *identifies* as female made me vulnerable in so many ways.
Fuck you people and your Nazi gender quantums or whatever the fuck you want to call it.
And it's lost on no-one that you always come for the Black girls.
