Okay. That was seriously fun! Cannot wait for pics to arrive but we planted a lot of potatoes, lettuce, & squash, then we planted cups full of extras for them to transplant later, then we went on a walk at the park to the big ol' bush of honeysuckle & the scouts got to try sucking the ends of the flowers for nectar.
Wouldn't you know it that the hesitant ones were the ones who didn't want to stop? 😂
Nothing like a kid asking if I'd tried them only for me to turn to them with lips full of flowers

Well, it's Monday... should've guessed it'd be a doozy by the way my bones and joints feel. 😂 Bus was super late, was told it was broken down by a trucker, then as I was assessing what to do next it came flying by and honked it's horn at me 💨 decided an Uber was the answer this morning instead of waiting another 40 minutes for the next bus and be late... Not ideal, but at least I'm on campus

looking for candying the actual flowers to be passed out as treats. I'd like them to retain their shape if possible, but mostly trying for ways to introduce how candy can be made from flowers as simply as possible with a history of how they were made prior to easy access to sugar (kind of like a survival type thing, ie. access to sugar in woods would be difficult to obtain).

I wanna make candied flowers this year!!! No eggs and trying to get a close to the versions that would have been accessible to indigenous tribes before colonization. I'd like to learn this before I teach the youngs about edible flowers again this spring... Any recipes or tips? How did one candy before easy access to sugar? I need to know this!

Just introduced my elder client to the Merlin Birding app. Don't think I've ever seen someone so excited for a phone app. 😊 She said she probably wouldn't use most of the features, but she will most definitely be using the sound id feature! Not certain how this happened, but my order of free potatoes to grow and give away has placed me on some sort of food growers list for free food seeds! Finally getting around to transplanting some of these seedlings... 5 yogurt containers has become 18 with just the first species... Goldenwave Tickseed. I might run out of space before I run out of plants 😳 This is the best run of seed starts I've done 🎉

He was a fun person. I heard so many of his stories about growing up in NY from immigrant parents, leaving the family to start on his own, then there was the gardening advice! 😅 I remember fondly of most of my neighbors in the FL panhandle. Many elders of a variety of backgrounds, all with stories to share. Every story is a blessing

an elder Italian man who was a volunteer driver for a local hospital & also happened to live up the street from me. He would hold conversations at top volume about everything. Joked on his heritage & upbringing in NY, plus was a superb gardener. He took one look at me after hearing my story & told me to never stop moving. Once you stop, it gets harder to get going again. I have degenerative joint issues & was in PT for ACL/Meniscus rebuild at the time. I heed that advice every day

Never underestimate the simple joys when with elders. What you both find fun separately may not be the best choice for together time. A car full of '80's pop tunes, sweet coffee drinks, and cruising for hours looking at holiday light displays became a memory for a lifetime that kept my momma talking for hours and drove all other repetitive thoughts from her mind.

Not me waking up after passing out exhausted from yesterday's garden work to find bits of tree in my hair and sleep cap... 🙄 it's gonna be a 10 cuppa coffee day.
6 peonies planted, 2 acres watered by hoses, 1 large bag of periwinkle and poison ivy vines pulled by hand, leaves blown, hoses rolled, sprinklers stored, and the water shut off for the season. Long, good day of work in nature with a buck watching me in the distance. 😅

The butterfly presence in the gardens this year is amazing. Finally seeing a huge host vs one or two. That adage, "build it, they will come," has now come to fruition. With the pollinator spaces being in their 5th year of growth, the diversity is staggering. I've well surpassed my 500 species goal on iNaturalist and there's quite a few new lepidoptera amongst those listings

We also taste tested strawberries from the garden! Which means we had enough ripe and ready to feed two classes of students! The ever bearing strawberry beds are producing well in their third year of growth.

Today was Teacher Passion Project day at one school. Students were given a list of activities to choose from and got to attend 2 different projects that interested various teachers. My teacher friend chose gardening and asked me to facilitate the sessions. We focused on pollinators and their needs, but while students were counting pollinators, a new garden friend was found.

Last night's adventures in junior gardening included teaching young scouts about how our homes are like hotels between natural areas, how beans and peas create fertilizer plus food, and that violets make great jelly and have exploding seed pods.
They planted pansies, violets, snap peas, and black beans to take home in recycled containers. Yay, Plants!

In other than-curse-those-european-house-sparrows news, the nature center visit went well! I'm going to look totally goofy in an official photo for the tour guide, w/ wild hair & muddy boots, but there was enough plant life to show & they're stoked about the native foods from native flowers concept that I've been building on in these spaces. Along w/ the perennial food garden, traditional food garden, & wildlife spaces, there's so much life! Bonus? Each concept can be built in a small space.

Agroforestry offers many avenues for long term food security, carbon sequestration, air purification, & many other ecosystem services. They become semi-permanent resources to all in the region, but they require time to grow & space to stay. Unlike traditional Ag where land can be turned into food space, a food forest stays put, offering its bounty for years to come. Finally got outside to play with seeds. So grateful it was still warm after dark tonight. I planted the first round of flowering natives for the home... a tray full of mountain mint and bergamont. Bees are gonna love it here 💙
Note to self, pay attention to the sowing temperatures before you start your planting... had to insulate and set up a seed shelf with a heat mat after the fact. Kinda hard to keep quiet in the dark basement. 😂

So, I bought more seeds... in my defense, when I mentioned walkable flowering ground covers to hubs, he gave an enthusiastic 2 thumbs up... I also added a "Prairie in work" sign to ward off nosey city officials

Oh my goodness! I don't know how I'm going to swing everything, but I'll be teaching little people again this fall!
Super excited to work with kindergarten & 1st grade this time! Guess we'll just keep adding grade levels as we get funding and help. 😍😍😍😍

Birds are fascinating to watch in the dead of winter... Nothing else is really doing much, but spread some seed on the frozen snow and blue jays, cardinals, downy woodpeckers, doves, finches, sparrows, wrens, and more provide a spray of color and noise to liven up the day.

What a perfect urine marked canid paw print in the snow. By the gait and size, I'm thinking coyote. It came through the back open area and stalked close to the house before using the the trail to hunt in the front, if I'm reading the tracks correctly. Lots of activity in the front yard due to the seed extravaganza thrown out by Thing 1, so hunting there is not too far of a stretch.
Glad I caught these tracks before the rain hit!

It's Snowmagedeon over here!!!! Wheeee! Thing 1 and I dashed through the snowscape giggling like hyenas, with the snow reaching the tops of our boots. It's been years since we've seen this kind of snow. No roads, no noise, peaceful blanket upon the earth. What a joy!

Sigh. Work is done. Only got frostbite on my left big toe 😆, but the beds at the second school are trimmed up and leaf litter removed from the food beds to encourage squash beetle (and other pests) death. I don't use any chemicals on the school grounds, so natural control methods are required during freezing temps to reduce agricultural pests in the summer. It's going to finally hard freeze in the Cincy area. Finally!!!
So, so cold out there.... I'm going to crawl into a hole and hibernate now 🛌🏼

So much work goes into the planning of rainscaping... So much to consider from the soil quality to location of groundwater, from elevation to runoff of water, etc.
It seems that I've gotten myself into another big project with this mouth of mine. 😂
Should be educational for all involved though, and it's needed, so onto the next thing! Forward, march!

Using my one week off before college resumes to build beds that I got at a steep discount from Menards. Not the petty hate garden yet, these will host strawberries, lettuces, carrots, whatever other easy access food plants I want near the kitchen. Have four of these 5x2x11 beds, and there will be wooden trough styled pots in between each with low growing natives florals (or these might just hold the hated plants 😂, idk).

The Oak House
Stands amongst the oaks both big and small, hosts all the plants, and welcomes those who wish to help nature thrive.
The sign uses portions of the old oak that was just taken down. Next up will be a name placard for the house, refinishing the railings, and painting that concrete landing anything but that color.

Prickly pear and mums are first on my list to go into those planters; prickly pears are edible so I will also harvest them, but I hate growing cacti. Mums are simply ridiculous, imo with their one season of growth that everyone destroys their gardens to install in the fall. I'm sure there are more plants I dislike, like maple trees, which I dislike because they displace oaks in cleared forests. Another would be the milkweed vine. Amazing smelling, loved by butterflies, but is a terrific mess

Found drums, learned sib is creeping, started some cuttings of bidens, transplanted an octopus agave, attended church, learned about observing some sort of sabbath for mental health regardless of faith, & slept well. Other than the sib who demo'd in front of our mom their unwillingness to communicate w/me, pretty good day.
Grades are mostly posted, looks like I did pretty well, aced two finals (which surprised me), and it's time to get business caught up.
Daily life catch-up time! Happy Monday!🫂

Good morning ⬜ people!
Need a tree ritual. To respect the tree that was/is, to share the gratefulness of it's presence, & to prepare for the coming end on the 2nd.
I wonder how old she truly is... Near 100? Older?
Please help me celebrate this life that's seen so much.
Side note: I'm trying to keep an much of the wood as possible on site to respect the cycle & nature that have come to rely upon it's wood for survival, +the baby trees I've been harboring in this tree's shadow will soon see sun.

Red headed woodpecker has decided to pick up where the squirrels left off, cracking nuts on the rocks & taking off with the grub.
It was a mast fruiting year for both oaks, unfortunately it's the last for the front tree. According to arborist the tree could fall at any time, according to the type of fungus we're seeing grow out the base. We knew it was coming, but it's still very sad for me to realize the time has come.
Hoping the young oaks I've let grow under it take off once they see the sun
