Want a 45U server rack?
It's FREE!
But you have to come get it from my workshop in Everett
Seriously this thing is taking up a big chunk of space and I want it *gone*
If nobody takes it by Jan 4th I'm just gonna push it out into the alley way and let nature take its course

If your G5's don't seem to be getting along. Try introducing an Xserve G5 for them to play with

It's very important that when you adopt a Mac G5 you introduce it to your other Mac G5's right away
Socializing your Mac G5 is important to ensure it remains happy!
Remember. It's not just a PowerPC. It's a lifetime commitment

The irony for me is, the consistency is what lead me *to* Gentoo

I'm currently facing down being homeless likely at the end of the month. So I'm doing anything I can to try and make ends meet right now.
To that end, I put up a GoFundMe to try and buy more time for myself. I know everyone is struggling but I'm just kinda trying to survive right now ;-;

Today in "Shaun commits Wi-Fi crimes"
My workshop gets basically *zero* Wi-Fi reception on my laptop. The highest speedtest result was 0.10Mbps
So, I dig out my $150 OpenWRT One router. Bigger antennas = better. Right?
I point it at the 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi the shop has (5Ghz doesn't penetrate the literal multiple feet of concrete walls)
Aaaand I get 11 megabits down, 1Mbps up
So much jitter to the upstream router it hurts
But it *works*

Some people might (understandably) be asking "Shaun why are you fighting with the CEO of Netgate on fucking HackerNews"
Because those fucking clowns shipped a known-broken Wireguard stack to every single PFsense user (both free and paid) because they wanted to race to market PFsense as having a feature none of the other firewall vendors had at the time
Of course the best the CEO can do is whine "ragebait"
They're a bunch of vindictive clowns and deserve to be mocked

Some folks know I am an *unashamed* PFsense hater. Netgate is a fucking awful company and I wish them the absolute worst
Unfortunately the owner of Netgate (Jim Thompson) crawled out of the woodwork to cry and piss and shout about people insulting PFsense in a thread about OpenWRT

Citing the UNIX design as an eternal guiding star feels a bit silly, but anyway
The reason systemd contains so many projects was those projects chose to merge under the systemd umbrella. Before that it was a free-wheeling mess with sysvinit/OpenRC/upstart/[insert other init manager] + the Kits + ntp-client/Chrony/whatever NTP and about a dozen other "parts"
You didn't so much put them together as pound the jigsaw pieces until they "fit" enough together to work (ish)

Something I've found building a 'retro internet service' is the absolute culture gap with younger people (early 20's)
They find the project interesting but then get anxious asking "okay but what can I contribute". Like they need to "hustle" or "prove their worth to be here"
I have to explain to them "do things that make you happy. Build things that bring you joy"
The internet they grew up on is so *transactional* that it's just how they've come to expect it. That it wants something "of them"

So because I'm *incredibly* smart I gave Windows Server 2003 R2 x64 a 10GB disk image
Turns out just running Windows Update was enough to cause it to consume the entire disk. And then hang Windows Update itself in doing so

Amazingly it recovered 3GB of data immediately and is happily puttering along even through updates

Mercifully someone rewrote the whole fucking ebuild though so maybe this version will build

I've spent the last literal fucking hour trying to reverse-engineer Cracklib's fucked up ebuild
2.7.X releases are all gone. The best I can find is 2.8.12 from Debian. So I copied the 2.7 ebuild over and started *fixing* it
At least now it fucking BUILDS. Though the linker seems to keel over dead looking for a directory that doesn't exist now

The main reason this rebuild is taking so long is I have to scour the internet for old tarballs
Which is made *significantly* worse because Google's results are FUCKING WORTHLESS now
Oh you want 1.56? Well here's other numbers, by the way let me HIGHLIGHT THEM IN BOLD so your eyes are drawn to them even though they're incorrect

I love that I have to restart the "bootstrap.sh" every time a package fails to *download*
And it just linearly chews through every package in a preset order
So every time I need to go find a package that was missing from Roy's "olde-distfiles" folder I have to rebuild Binutils and everything else over and over again

HEY, #RetroComputing folks
In preparation for a "closed beta" I overhauled my Compu-Global-Hyper-Mega-Net landing page
At this point the network itself works solidly (though our available total bandwidth is about 300Mbps). Folks have attached their own retro computers and verified end-to-end transit works and even played games!
Now we just need *YOU*
Do you wanna wire your retro computers up and help build a "retro internet" with us? Take a look at the website below

Apparently the final version of FileZilla to run on Windows XP is completely single-threaded
Which means if you feed it 25,000 tiny files, the UI will just hard-lock and refuse to redraw anything until it completes
