The root word is believed by etymologists to be an ancient Proto-Indo-
European word, ghabh, meaning to give, to hold, or to receive. It is
found, e.g., in the Sanskrit gabhasti (hand, forearm); the Latin habere
(to have, hold, possess); the Old English giefan and Old Norse gefa (to
give), and in the present-day Swedish ger (gives) [50].
However, the Latin prefix, de, meaning to do the opposite, or undo, or
take away totally and completely (think of the word, defrost), utterly
negates this giving, having, or holding. Again according to the Online
Etymology Dictionary [51], the Latin word debere means “‘to owe’,
originally ‘keep something away from someone,’ from de ‘away’ +
habere ‘to have’.” In medieval Latin, the meaning of habere was “goods,
capital, investment” [52].

you would be able to do with it because you could not legally transport
or sell it. So, essentially, the use and value of gold had been confiscated.
This was certainly the case because it remained illegal for a U.S. person

A great comparison on a much smaller scale is the Jerry Sandusky scandal at Penn State. Im from Pennsylvania and Penn State alumni…at the time every alumni and penn state fan I knew defended Joe Paterno for protecting Sandusky because of what he did for their football team.
